Yes, this is an excellent improvement to the older Artograph lightboxes, for the reasons you mention, plus it remains cool to the touch, and is a lot less bulky.
I've been looking into these for a few days, though I'm not ready to make the purchase yet. I'd use one with my art projects, where I can lay a sheet of 2-ply Bristol board on top of a pencil sketch and ink in an outline to start the finished work. It sounds like most professional artist swear by the Artograph brand.
It should be a nice alternative to the older models that use more electricity and use bulbs which need replacement more often. The portability also helps.
The current DANIEL SMITH 2010-2011 catalog price for the 9x12 9 (sku 018 010 031) is $124.95 (list price is $139.00) Prices are subject to change when the new 2011-2012 catalog comes out August 1st, 2011.

Hi Oscaroxy,
Good question! No, the light pads are quiet, the noise you do hear in the background of the video is an air conditioner.
Light Pads are quiet because they use LED lights instead of florescent lights which have the "buzz" you mention.

Do that stuff generate noise?
