  • look how healthy that horse is

  • Were no snakes harmed in the making of this film?

  • i love the scene where they play tag

  • I would love to be able to do that with a horse!!! ^_^

  • wheres 6???

  • l always happy cry when i see the dancing scene:)

  • awesome movie, reminds me of when i was a kid. Thanks for uploading

  • id do anything to own a horse like that

  • I would soooo die if I was in this boy's position. I don't think I could spearfish OR make a fire.

  • @wendyoffroad thats why survival man exists now;)

  • Its that alec from the adventures

  • i think its so awsome when they are playing together

  • when horses have thet tails up des that mean theyre excited? by the way cass ole is awesome

  • The horse was definitely Arabian. I knew the owner. I even got to meet Cass Ole. A magnificent horse!

  • @daisysmamu You did?!? That's so awesome! Tell us more, please

  • @Trund27 It was back around '77 or '78, so a long time ago, but Dr. Cuello invited my then-bf-now-xhusb and me to come over and "meet" Cass Ole, I think it was in the evening, but while I don't remember much of the details - other than how stunning he was, full of personality - the moment left an impression on me. And I guess I feel a small amount of "pride" when I see the movie, because I know he was local, and I had a chance to know him briefly. Sorry I can't be more helpful than that!

  • @daisysmamu Thanks very much for sharing your memories. I would feel very proud too to have met such a magnificent animal. and he sounds like a beauty

    Cheers from Canada

  • Casse Ole was a purebred Arab show stallion. (all show horses have slightly different conformation requirements than the standard of the breed, hence the slight physical differences. Also, a thoroughbred (not a Quarter) was a stand in for "The Black" for the horse race sequences. (both horses were actually given mane and tail extensions to give him a more wild and classic Arab look. Cass was additionally given a dye job to mask the white star on his forehead) .Pointless trivia to be sure

  • @painterplegia No, No! Trivia, to me, is actually filling in the details that make knowledge much richer. Thank you for the info!

  • @Trund27 Thank you. Still, I regret posting it. Movies are entertainment. And one thing I've noticed on YouTube is the constant nit -picking many viewers seem to thrive on. The whole point of any film is suspension of disbelief. Who cares if its "scientifically accurate" or ordinarily plausible. Just enjoy it or turn it off. I just wanted to settle a thread of argument regarding the horses used in the film. (and this film is a cinematic gem. Its archived in the Library of Congress)

  • @painterplegia You are so right about the nit-picking. Along with intelligent discussion comes the inevitable one-up-manship of who knows what facts in what greater detail until all meaning or enjoyment is lost. But the difference is the small details that add rather than tear apart a film that make all the difference, and your little item was (to me) terrific.

    Cheers from Canada

  • @painterplegia I could tell you were Canadian. Want to know how? Only a Canadian would take the time to respond (and courteously, I might add) to such a uninteresting comment. The fact that I am responding to your response, might lead you to believe that I am a Canadian too. And you'd be right. Gotta go shovel the snow and listen to my Gordon Lightfoot and Ann Murray CD's now. (that was for the Americans)

  • Comment removed

  • @painterplegia um...not to be rude or anything...but when you say that American's sterotype Canadians as people who shovel snow and listen to GF and AM aren't u sort of sterotyping Americans? On a happier note, i love this movie so much. Being a kid and watching this over and over again, wishing that I could have a black stallion of my own. Makes me wish I could go back to those days. *sigh*

  • @ElDoradoGoldenFlyer OH, NO, NO! (when will I learn, you can't really make jokes, in text form sometimes,, no matter how well-meaning, over the internet. I meant no disrespect to you, or ANY Americans. I LOVE everthing about America and Americans. I was making fun of the long-running stereotype, most Canadians (rightly or wrongly) have of many Americans. There is a certain complex inferiority complex that this nation has, that comes out as smugness - a contrite Canadian :)

  • @painterplegia ohhh ok. I just thought that you were one of those weird people who have an unnecessary grudge against anyone who happens to live in a different country (you know the type). I just got a little offended because I have alot of friends in Canada. Sorry for the misunderstanding. : )

  • @ElDoradoGoldenFlyer 'whew' [wipes sweat from brow]

  • I remember watching this as a kid lord knows I can't remember how old I was then but my father worked at the time for MGM (Metro Goldwyn Mayor) I saw it at their movie theatre on their lot I fell in love with this movie the kid played a great part in this movie and the horse is or was great he is probably dead by now! may he rest in peace!

  • I remember reading these books when I was little, but I've never seen any movies--until now :)

and it IS so amazing that they were able to make this movie the way they did, it is just so amazing what they captured with it being so silent and all :)

    thanks for posting. :)

  • I love the music starting at 1:28 and ending at 2:03

  • @horsesaremylife31899 I know - the music is stunning

  • I feel like i need something like,...:no humans, horses OR SNAKES were harmed during the making of this film,...... ;D

  • the 3 people who disliked this, was obviously that cobras family.

  • Could the cobra sense and smell that the boy was there from ways away? Why was he so mad? I thought many snakes just bit if you bother them.

  • Cass is Crabbet bred which makes him look a little more stocky than say Egyptian or Polish. Personally I love it.

  • @Cassolelvr I had fleabitten grey polish mare this movie reminds me of her on so many levels

  • If you're going to have a horse portray an Arabian in the movies, can you at least make it half Arabian? This ''Black Stallion'' looks more like a Quarter Horse than anything. Head isn't nearly dished enough, legs are too stocky, tail is too low set, and there looks to be six vertebrae, not five. So far, I prefer the book.

  • @Spontenaity They used a few horses here that were different in breed, but the main star, Cass ole, is pure arab with excellent confirmation.

  • @Cassolelvr they both were pure Arabs

  • @LillithDotcheva There were a few doubles that weren't pure Arabs, and you can clearly see that in the movie.

  • he looks Arab to me not all Arabians have a really dished head there are different types like the polish Arab not all Arabians are Egyptians which have the look your talking about

  • good the stallioon returned the favor and saved the boy like he saved him so now they are evan

  • A wonderful work of art. A tribute to the beauty and magic of the horse. This movie brings back wonderful memories of a carefree childhood.

  • i was like "gooo black" when he was killing that snake. I fucking hate snakes....SO DISGUSTING.

  • @TheDowntown86 Ever read the Bible?

  • i like where the horse brings his head up and looks @ alec.. in 5:23

  • 2 people have NO life!!

  • This boy had the best "job" acting in this film, EVER. I wanted to be him so badly when I was younger. One of my favorite movies.

  • 1:43 = EPIC!!

  • Stunning movie. The music, the photography, the acting. Takes my breath away still. And what a powerful example of the pure and enormous love between a horse and his boy.

  • No snakes were harmed in the making of this film ...

  • Comment removed

  • @MeanieNene1 Same reason dudes are obsessed with cars lol

  • I wish you could feed a wild horse a leaf and they would be your best friend! If only it worked that way in real life :) Great movie!

  • @Luv2Laugh432 I wish. Though I think it might've helped that horses are pack (herd?) animals and he was probably hungry and lonely.

  • @fillysunray horses run in herds ;)

  • puts castaway to shame!!!!

  • @MeanieNene1 cause theyre so beautiful

  • Luckily Black saved the day by stomping the shit out of a cobra. Now you learned something, Alec. One with a fork tongue should never be trusted.

  • 2 people got bit by a cobra.

  • i absolute love 1:49 it's like he's saying 'i am king of the island. . ."

  • Thanks for the Black Stallion upload. I watched it last night...and got a little confused. After part 5 I went to the 3 parts for the race...and there seemed to be something missing. Like introducing Mickey Roonie, Alec arriving back home, etc. I don't know if there was another segment or part that you titled differently and I didn't see it, or what. What was there was very good. Any help on the missing links would make it even better...I might even watch it again!

  • I forgot how stunningly beautiful this movie is. Vizeck is right, they just don't make movies like this anymore.

  • i'm also really proud that my horse's dam is a full blood arabian mare. his sire is a pinto-arabian elite breeding stallion. that makes my horse 3/4 arabian <33

  • my horse would never kill a cobra to save me. he'd be too chicken to do that :)

  • love this move but its kind of funny how fake it is , (X

  • after he gives the black that piece of seaweed he is like "ooh you have food i am sticking with you " lol

  • this almost makes you cry after what an all in this movie that that child had been witness loseing his dad .He befriends this amazeing horse .

  • lol its like the horse is like "u saved my life i save urs were even " :p

  • Amazing!(L)

  • ok thx

  • love the music

  • @horsesaremylife31899 Me too; the music is so gorgeous and it's used well in the film. it's cool that it was Francis Ford Coppola's father Carmine who wrote the score.

  • they didn't you a Arab thou they use a quarter horse fail

  • @nightwolfkakana Fail to you your a moron cass ole was a Arabian show horse bet you don't know what a quarter horse really looks like and you don't know what a Arabian looks like i suggest you go to some Arabian horse shows

  • @LillithDotcheva . Excuse me . So Dont tell me to go to a Arabian show . I have been working with horses all my life ,now i tell you go check up on the movie , acutely do some research . Ok and that was 7 months ago i posted that comment so why are you responding to it now ? , i was joking when i made that comment . an Arabian horse has a deeper dip on the nose then a quarter horse and a lighter body , now some scenes they did use a a quarter horse look it up on the movie .

  • That snake got OWNED!! Lol

  • @Joel0277 RIGHT! lol at 01:00-01:15 THAT SNAKE GOT OWNED!

  • funny horse

  • is this horse pure arabian ? His face is not so typic arabian ?But I don't no xD

  • @Mrslittlesister10 yes he is cass ole an arabian stallion

  • arabian horses are very friendly but not in the beginning, they are shy, ignore them, they will come to you. we have had arabians not to ride just to watch, our arabian horses always get the water before the owner, we respect them. best arabian horse is the one grows in sand, desert.

  • @BLOODYCLQ

i can agree! you're very right because we got an arabian/? and when we first met him he was shy. now he loves us and neighs when he sees us and is so friendly. He's a funny horse. and the desert ones are the best. :)

  • oh man I would actually LOVE to be stuck on an island with that horse <3

  • Pour moi, je trouve que cet étalon arabe noir est le plus beau !!!!!!

  • I played holes in the vinyl record of the soundtrack to this movie. Who didn't want

and Arabian stallion after seeing this movie?!!

  • i was a little kid last i saw this movie

  • That dead snake would defiantly be lunch.

  • what i wouldn't give for a stud like that .......

  • why do horses in the movies have to save some one from a snake? they could get bitten, just leave the person to die!

  • @harjitp in case you didn't know, horses HATE snakes.

  • @harjitp this is the first time I've seen this happen..

  • Just love this film for quit a while when i was a little kid at age of 12 !!

  • best part of the movie are these scenes.

  • he died off natural reason the other arabian that did the racing was euthanized of colic not Cass Ole

  • Soulseek, thank you so much for posting these clips of the film. I have not seen this film since I was a child at the cinema and I am happy to say that it has lost none of its magic. I hadn't realised as a child quite what a feat it was for so much of the growing relationship between Alec and the Black to be conveyed without words, just in music, light, gesture. Thank you!!!

  • I absolutely love this part where the Black tramples the cobra. Score one for horses! :D

  • Way to go Black...one good turn deserves another....I love horses. Such noble creatures...Swift had it right.

  • This first half of this movie on the island is so incredibly well done that the second half suffers a bit in comparison.

  • Not sure that the second half suffers, but I agree that they are almost like two different movies. Or maybe like two chapters of the same book, by different authors.

  • I call that the FULL METAL JACKET syndrome.

  • wish I had a horse instead of 4 parasitic cats. good for nuthin' beasts!

  • same here horses are much more entertaining. My cat is called Sebastian LOL. Beautiful film.

  • Every single time the end of this part comes i always shed a little tear..i get so emotional its ridiculous. This movie is so inspirational.

  • thankyou so much for puttin this film on here ive have been lookin for it for years!!!x

  • Uh... a shipwreck???? did you miss that?

  • I assume the island is hot or his clothes have been ruined.

  • its so hard not to admit the way they filmed this movie was just Amazing! they dont capture stuff like this in film anymore, its silent yet full of emotion, like a painting or poetry in motion... and a film full of memories from my youth, aahh to be young again is just not possible, only when you watch a film like this, then you are young again.....

  • @vizeck I didn'd know what to say about this movie. You just said it for me. Thank you so much.

  • @vizeck Beautifully said. Bravo.

  • @vizeck how did they film it?

  • @vizeck Beautifully said

  • 9:25

I remember that music from when I saw this a thousand times as a kid :)

Hey...my nose is crunching up...there's something salty on my face-*sniff*

    ...oh.

  • Demais a cena da cobra. O garoto fica como hipnotizado e é salvo pelo cavalo. Linda a amizade dos dois.

  • I believe Cass Ole is an Arabian, not a QH (contrary to people's beliefs). I double checked on google to be sure.

I believe he does have the fine head and he has that arched tail. He also has the high crest. He's not as slender and delicate as some Arabians are thought to be, but he does look like an Arabian.

Doc's Keepin Time is another famous movie horse and though supposed to be a thoroughbred (most likely) he was in fact a QH. You can tell too, he's so round, lol.

  • According to the pedigree database Cass was a full blooded arabian. The part in the match race was filmed with a quarter horse though. And Doc is a quarter horse

  • I love this movie. so beautiful. But I'm not sure, but was this ever a book?

  • He looks like my mare :)

  • I would DIE to have the chance to tame a horse like that and have such an amazing bond with one!! :D (my horse just thinks "food" "ride" "grass" lool)

  • get a baby horse live with it and love it till its older and really likes you and youll have a good bond also you have to train and nourish it with love and dont break it in hard because that can make it think your crule thats how i did it it works though it takes a long time

  • too cute, that shows how trust works in a hors

  • 1:48.....so magestic!

  • both are not lonely anymore.

  • I do that with my pony, run away while teasing him with liqourice, he looves it!

Its like his favourite game, he continues running after me even when I have no liqourice!

  • What music is at 5:28-7:19?

  • That horse is SOOOOO GORGEOUS! HE LOOKS LIKE ONE OF MY DREAM HORSES! ARABS ROCK!!!

  • @Ilovezacefron4ever95 yeah well i hate zac efron soooooooooo!!!

  • I wonder how long they had to spend looking for a black Arabian...

  • Maybe not many long time. Black Arabians horse are not so hard to find.

  • I was six years old when this came out. I still like this film today. I hope this doesnt get made into a remake or some crap like that. If they do PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD.....dont cast Zack Efron in it.

  • Lol, they wont be able to, coz I'll have already shot him or something like that

  • When you do that I will help you flee the country. LOL

  • how old he ment to be? (the boy)

  • i think the guy playing alec should be older and have red hair like in the books

  • what a beautiful stallion!!

  • Lol I love how the black comes out of nowhere. *sigh* imagine being able to spend all that time with such a beautiful animal! urgh! I'm jealous!

  • Heheh. A friend of mine, Margo Shallcross used to work with Cass Ole, the black stallion around the world. Cass Ole was a Donahue Arabian in San Antonio, TX, and Margo is part of our Arabian Horse club. She has some cool stories. like, how Cass Ole ended up ripping one of his eyes out.

  • Lol. how lovely...XD

  • What a beautiful horse!

  • that kid laying Alec is much muh much younger than how I pictures him in the book

  • such a precious scene in this movie (the last minute)....

  • Alec barley talks. But he is like the horse wisperer lol!

  • 9:00 - Wow. How the hell did they do that?

Some of the moments in this movie are pretty damn amazing, both technically and in terms of the film-making itself.

  • The last minute of this segment is like Heaven. Everything works so well together - the cinematography/lighting, soundtrack, lack of dialogue, acting, bond between boy and horse. The feeling I get when I watch this is rare in cinema and it renews my hope in cinema as a poetic art and medium for expression.

  • aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamen - this film is a masterpiece of storytelling through pure cinema, choreography, and soundtrack...... some amazing horse training and that kelly kid was a horse rider expert - that was a must for the part.

  • @Boudosaved More like a silent movie out of 1921

  • @puterboy1 perhaps; any one in particular?

  • @Boudosaved Saved from Ttitanic starring Dorothy Gibson.

  • The last 45 seconds of this clip is probably my favorite moment in film...and is truly a part of who I am. Growing up, I saw this movie and fell in love with horses. To this day, even when I get caught up in the training and showing and points...I never let myself forget the feeling of those precious 45 seconds when Alec is hugging Black. That's the reason I have horses right there. What is the line from Seabiscuit? "That's the poetry."SICK

  • Beautiful horse. Died kinda young though. Right?

  • Oh shit, I forgot about that part with the horse when he kills the snake. I was watching all close, and all of a sudden this horse is all "DIE SNAKE DIEEE!!!" and I'm just like "WOAH!" *falls off couch*

  • Lol, I still can't tell if I remembered that from 6 years ago, or if this movie is just predictable. xD Could be either one.

  • White on the left fore leg at 03:17 ^^,

  • yeah Cass Ole had four white stockings and a white star on his forehead. they dyed those parts black and put hair extensions in his mane to give him the makings of a wild stallion

  • lol...i can see the white star on the horses forhead

  • in 03:17 you can see for a moment that this horse has white leg;)

  • XD i think thats a mare!!!!!!!!!!!

  • This movie is why I own an arab (actually I think he owns me.). Plain and simple, they are the most magnificent creatures on this earth.

  • Bei 3:45 sieht man voll seinen Arsch xDxDxD

  • The last 45 seconds of this clip is probably my favorite moment in film...and is truly a part of who I am. Growing up, I saw this movie and fell in love with horses. • A magical movie, timeless classic!

  • Amen to that!

  • And Amen again!

  • OMG I would soo love to have a horse like that!!...I mean I have had all the Black Stallion movies ever sence I was very little and iam 16 and still watch this movie!!...ANd I have pictures of the horse they used!!...The horse in this movie isn't all black he has a blaze and 4 white socks on his legs!...They had to paint him all Black for him to the Stallion!!

  • They just don't make movies like this anymore.

  • I love this video and the stallion was sooo amazing when he saved the boy's life! OMG i love this video

  • Oh! Wow the horse saves the boy by killing the cobra!

  • Gorgeous, classic film.

  • Most amazing film ever made. Part of my library of flixs. Fantastic photography and this scene with him feeding the Black was a classic. We'll never see one like this again! They don't make anything equal in today's films. Thanks for Posting

  • One of my most favourite movies!! I mis my HORSES /cry...

  • Stunning the horse looks like mine only jets a gelding. xxx

  • An amazing movie. My wildest dream.

  • OMG this part scared me SOOOOO much when i first saw it a long time ago!
