@Trund27 It was back around '77 or '78, so a long time ago, but Dr. Cuello invited my then-bf-now-xhusb and me to come over and "meet" Cass Ole, I think it was in the evening, but while I don't remember much of the details - other than how stunning he was, full of personality - the moment left an impression on me. And I guess I feel a small amount of "pride" when I see the movie, because I know he was local, and I had a chance to know him briefly. Sorry I can't be more helpful than that!
@daisysmamu Thanks very much for sharing your memories. I would feel very proud too to have met such a magnificent animal. and he sounds like a beauty
Casse Ole was a purebred Arab show stallion. (all show horses have slightly different conformation requirements than the standard of the breed, hence the slight physical differences. Also, a thoroughbred (not a Quarter) was a stand in for "The Black" for the horse race sequences. (both horses were actually given mane and tail extensions to give him a more wild and classic Arab look. Cass was additionally given a dye job to mask the white star on his forehead) .Pointless trivia to be sure
@Trund27 Thank you. Still, I regret posting it. Movies are entertainment. And one thing I've noticed on YouTube is the constant nit -picking many viewers seem to thrive on. The whole point of any film is suspension of disbelief. Who cares if its "scientifically accurate" or ordinarily plausible. Just enjoy it or turn it off. I just wanted to settle a thread of argument regarding the horses used in the film. (and this film is a cinematic gem. Its archived in the Library of Congress)
@painterplegia You are so right about the nit-picking. Along with intelligent discussion comes the inevitable one-up-manship of who knows what facts in what greater detail until all meaning or enjoyment is lost. But the difference is the small details that add rather than tear apart a film that make all the difference, and your little item was (to me) terrific.
@painterplegia I could tell you were Canadian. Want to know how? Only a Canadian would take the time to respond (and courteously, I might add) to such a uninteresting comment. The fact that I am responding to your response, might lead you to believe that I am a Canadian too. And you'd be right. Gotta go shovel the snow and listen to my Gordon Lightfoot and Ann Murray CD's now. (that was for the Americans)
@painterplegia um...not to be rude or anything...but when you say that American's sterotype Canadians as people who shovel snow and listen to GF and AM aren't u sort of sterotyping Americans? On a happier note, i love this movie so much. Being a kid and watching this over and over again, wishing that I could have a black stallion of my own. Makes me wish I could go back to those days. *sigh*
@ElDoradoGoldenFlyer OH, NO, NO! (when will I learn, you can't really make jokes, in text form sometimes,, no matter how well-meaning, over the internet. I meant no disrespect to you, or ANY Americans. I LOVE everthing about America and Americans. I was making fun of the long-running stereotype, most Canadians (rightly or wrongly) have of many Americans. There is a certain complex inferiority complex that this nation has, that comes out as smugness - a contrite Canadian :)
@painterplegia ohhh ok. I just thought that you were one of those weird people who have an unnecessary grudge against anyone who happens to live in a different country (you know the type). I just got a little offended because I have alot of friends in Canada. Sorry for the misunderstanding. : )
I remember watching this as a kid lord knows I can't remember how old I was then but my father worked at the time for MGM (Metro Goldwyn Mayor) I saw it at their movie theatre on their lot I fell in love with this movie the kid played a great part in this movie and the horse is or was great he is probably dead by now! may he rest in peace!
I remember reading these books when I was little, but I've never seen any movies--until now :)
and it IS so amazing that they were able to make this movie the way they did, it is just so amazing what they captured with it being so silent and all :)
If you're going to have a horse portray an Arabian in the movies, can you at least make it half Arabian? This ''Black Stallion'' looks more like a Quarter Horse than anything. Head isn't nearly dished enough, legs are too stocky, tail is too low set, and there looks to be six vertebrae, not five. So far, I prefer the book.
he looks Arab to me not all Arabians have a really dished head there are different types like the polish Arab not all Arabians are Egyptians which have the look your talking about
Stunning movie. The music, the photography, the acting. Takes my breath away still. And what a powerful example of the pure and enormous love between a horse and his boy.
Thanks for the Black Stallion upload. I watched it last night...and got a little confused. After part 5 I went to the 3 parts for the race...and there seemed to be something missing. Like introducing Mickey Roonie, Alec arriving back home, etc. I don't know if there was another segment or part that you titled differently and I didn't see it, or what. What was there was very good. Any help on the missing links would make it even better...I might even watch it again!
i'm also really proud that my horse's dam is a full blood arabian mare. his sire is a pinto-arabian elite breeding stallion. that makes my horse 3/4 arabian <33
@horsesaremylife31899 Me too; the music is so gorgeous and it's used well in the film. it's cool that it was Francis Ford Coppola's father Carmine who wrote the score.
@nightwolfkakana Fail to you your a moron cass ole was a Arabian show horse bet you don't know what a quarter horse really looks like and you don't know what a Arabian looks like i suggest you go to some Arabian horse shows
@LillithDotcheva . Excuse me . So Dont tell me to go to a Arabian show . I have been working with horses all my life ,now i tell you go check up on the movie , acutely do some research . Ok and that was 7 months ago i posted that comment so why are you responding to it now ? , i was joking when i made that comment . an Arabian horse has a deeper dip on the nose then a quarter horse and a lighter body , now some scenes they did use a a quarter horse look it up on the movie .
arabian horses are very friendly but not in the beginning, they are shy, ignore them, they will come to you. we have had arabians not to ride just to watch, our arabian horses always get the water before the owner, we respect them. best arabian horse is the one grows in sand, desert.

Soulseek, thank you so much for posting these clips of the film. I have not seen this film since I was a child at the cinema and I am happy to say that it has lost none of its magic. I hadn't realised as a child quite what a feat it was for so much of the growing relationship between Alec and the Black to be conveyed without words, just in music, light, gesture. Thank you!!!
Not sure that the second half suffers, but I agree that they are almost like two different movies. Or maybe like two chapters of the same book, by different authors.

Doc's Keepin Time is another famous movie horse and though supposed to be a thoroughbred (most likely) he was in fact a QH. You can tell too, he's so round, lol.
According to the pedigree database Cass was a full blooded arabian. The part in the match race was filmed with a quarter horse though. And Doc is a quarter horse
I would DIE to have the chance to tame a horse like that and have such an amazing bond with one!! :D (my horse just thinks "food" "ride" "grass" lool)
get a baby horse live with it and love it till its older and really likes you and youll have a good bond also you have to train and nourish it with love and dont break it in hard because that can make it think your crule thats how i did it it works though it takes a long time
I was six years old when this came out. I still like this film today. I hope this doesnt get made into a remake or some crap like that. If they do PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD.....dont cast Zack Efron in it.
Heheh. A friend of mine, Margo Shallcross used to work with Cass Ole, the black stallion around the world. Cass Ole was a Donahue Arabian in San Antonio, TX, and Margo is part of our Arabian Horse club. She has some cool stories. like, how Cass Ole ended up ripping one of his eyes out.
The last minute of this segment is like Heaven. Everything works so well together - the cinematography/lighting, soundtrack, lack of dialogue, acting, bond between boy and horse. The feeling I get when I watch this is rare in cinema and it renews my hope in cinema as a poetic art and medium for expression.
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamen - this film is a masterpiece of storytelling through pure cinema, choreography, and soundtrack...... some amazing horse training and that kelly kid was a horse rider expert - that was a must for the part.
The last 45 seconds of this clip is probably my favorite moment in film...and is truly a part of who I am. Growing up, I saw this movie and fell in love with horses. To this day, even when I get caught up in the training and showing and points...I never let myself forget the feeling of those precious 45 seconds when Alec is hugging Black. That's the reason I have horses right there. What is the line from Seabiscuit? "That's the poetry."SICK
Oh shit, I forgot about that part with the horse when he kills the snake. I was watching all close, and all of a sudden this horse is all "DIE SNAKE DIEEE!!!" and I'm just like "WOAH!" *falls off couch*
yeah Cass Ole had four white stockings and a white star on his forehead. they dyed those parts black and put hair extensions in his mane to give him the makings of a wild stallion

OMG I would soo love to have a horse like that!!...I mean I have had all the Black Stallion movies ever sence I was very little and iam 16 and still watch this movie!!...ANd I have pictures of the horse they used!!...The horse in this movie isn't all black he has a blaze and 4 white socks on his legs!...They had to paint him all Black for him to the Stallion!!
Most amazing film ever made. Part of my library of flixs. Fantastic photography and this scene with him feeding the Black was a classic. We'll never see one like this again! They don't make anything equal in today's films. Thanks for Posting

get a baby horse live with it and love it till its older and really likes you and youll have a good bond also you have to train and nourish it with love and dont break it in hard because that can make it think your crule thats how i did it it works though it takes a long time

I do that with my pony, run away while teasing him with liqourice, he looves it!
Its like his favourite game, he continues running after me even when I have no liqourice!

I was six years old when this came out. I still like this film today. I hope this doesnt get made into a remake or some crap like that. If they do PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD.....dont cast Zack Efron in it.

Lol I love how the black comes out of nowhere. *sigh* imagine being able to spend all that time with such a beautiful animal! urgh! I'm jealous!

9:00 - Wow. How the hell did they do that?
Some of the moments in this movie are pretty damn amazing, both technically and in terms of the film-making itself.

@Boudosaved More like a silent movie out of 1921

The last 45 seconds of this clip is probably my favorite moment in film...and is truly a part of who I am. Growing up, I saw this movie and fell in love with horses. To this day, even when I get caught up in the training and showing and points...I never let myself forget the feeling of those precious 45 seconds when Alec is hugging Black. That's the reason I have horses right there. What is the line from Seabiscuit? "That's the poetry."SICK

Beautiful horse. Died kinda young though. Right?
Kathiiee92 3 years ago
Oh shit, I forgot about that part with the horse when he kills the snake. I was watching all close, and all of a sudden this horse is all "DIE SNAKE DIEEE!!!" and I'm just like "WOAH!" *falls off couch*
SLCPunker101 3 years ago 3
Lol, I still can't tell if I remembered that from 6 years ago, or if this movie is just predictable. xD Could be either one.

yeah Cass Ole had four white stockings and a white star on his forehead. they dyed those parts black and put hair extensions in his mane to give him the makings of a wild stallion
