  • I guess we know why they ride donkeys there now. I always thought it was because they are poor. You learn something every day. :)

  • hehehehe man ur so funny, but i love it, u got to loose that long hair man

  • You, sir, just earned yourself a subscriber! Great video, and thanks so much for showing this to all of us.

  • @HedgehogOutdoors Always another adventure on the horizon. Thanks for subbing.

  • numerous times while watching this video I'm screaming "GOD DAMMIT STOP REVVING IT SO MUCH!" woke up my roommate.

  • Not trying to rub salt in the wounds , but that's what you get for traveling by yourself . One wrong move out there and you can easily cut an artery and wind up bleeding to death . Also that bike is was to heavy to be traveling alone with on that terrain . Challenging yourself is one thing , stupidity is another . Just sayin !

  • @joeblackakareaper If everyone thought like you we'd have no Helge Pedersen, Reinhold Messner, Chuck Yeager, or anyone else worth remembering. If it wasn't dangerous it wouldn't be an adventure.

  • I'm from Colombia and we have many off road trails like those. Granted I ride a KX 250F so it's a little different, but we have taken KLR's with us, those things are beasts. Never the best idea to go off road by yourself, great effort though, and you're right, momentum is the key, and punch the gas harder

  • Horse is like "How many horse powers does that piece of trash got?"

  • you are my HERO halfthrottle....doing something like that....makes you learn alot about yourself and teaches valuable lessons in life. Never give up when you fall down...it's from the heart..just like running a marathon. Anyways...after watching all your vids, I just bought myself a 2006 klr 650

  • @Lborguy My ride this weekend gave me an all new respect for the KLR. Stay tuned for the video from Volcan Baru.

  • I burst out laughing at "by the power of grayskull" but yeah i've been in a similar situation with my own KLR. Nothing in the world seems as heavy as lifting a fully loaded bike for the 5th time while you whole body is aching like a mofo. Take care.

  • @wjr262 Dude yesterday I returned from a ride that put the drops in this one to shame. I'll start editing the video when I get a chance. Be sure to subscribe so you see it when I upload them. I needed all the power of Grayskull I could get.

  • Let me just say from experience that off road in Panama is not for the faint of heart, that red clay is a royal pain in the back, its unmerciful to get thru, and takes a month to wash it all off.

  • lol when that little horse climb that last hill easily. superb spirit though. God bless

  • they are call.. off road tires...

  • This is far more impressive than watching the "exploits" of two millionaires who go around the world, followed closely by a support truck with physical therapists, handlers, mechanics, and a film team...good job...

  • @65pont I am a fan of the Long Way series, but when you create a big budget show like that you have to make sure everything happens according to plan. And that means a support team, and other things that may take away from the adventure. I'm glad you liked the vid thanks.

  • I shall grace you with a subscribe...lol nah really im glad i stumbled on to your vids your carefree attitude is a plus in my book

  • I have dropped my KLR so many times and it always seemd to be herculean task to get it back again. I will try the "power of greyskull" next time :)

  • When I got my ass kicked by a slightly less ridiculous hill on my GS, I remember thinking "this would be so much easier on a smaller bike". Clearly, that's not really the case. At least the gouges make me look good when I'm parked at the coffee shop.

  • @vtmegrad98 The GS is advertised as the be all end all of adventure bikes, and it is until you actually take it off the pavement.

  • Nice job...on both your attempt at the hill and the video too.

  • Awesome video! I've had similar experiences, but mostly close to home with with other fat and out of shape friends to help out. :D

What is the ADVRider link to your ride report?

  • When I first watched this video I was like wtf idiot, then i understood u thought me something new about the klr that i dont see in many reviews the bodys A BEAST!!!! awesome videos

  • Good show sir but I gotta say... get some DOT knobby tires! That's been the best mod to my klr yet.

  • its not easy for you to do all the videoing single handed. good production! i love it.

  • @eccchung Yeah it does take a lot of effort, but on days like this that camera is the only reason I keep going.

  • hahaha the tires dont help you!

  • Awesome video! Looks like a rough day. But you're right. We gotta get our fat asses out there sometimes!

  • I come back to this video every now and then when I've had a bad day. And when I've had a good day. Either way, it brightens my day.

  • @lauriejennifer This was one hell of a day.

  • Maybe you should trade your bike for that donkey

  • Hey, I like the single sided saddlebag. Is that something new like a single sided swingarm for the KLR and where can I get one? Seriously, great vids. Keep up the good work. Didn't you used to ride in Utah? I'm surprised I've never seen you out on the trail. Keep up the good work.

  • 150-160kg ?

  • I would take some rope. Rope is very effective!

  • by the power of greyskull! haha

  • That was awesome tbh :P Don't you need someone to tag along with you? I'd love to go on trips like these

  • @BradenMurphy2 I would love some company when I'm out doing stupid stuff like this. Do you live in Panama?

  • @halfthrottle I live in South Africa - Cape Town but who knows what the next few years will bring, will give you a shout if I ever go there :) For now I'm gonna get started touring South Africa! Btw, very inspirational video "This Is My KLR650".

  • good ride, you need better tires for the mud, that onroad/offroad tires not good, I ride with them as well, no good. Well driven

  • This is what worries me about the KLR650, i really want one but I'm 150 pounds. This type of situation I'd be killing myself trying the right the damn thing. Maybe I should consider a DRZ400 instead.

  • @MetalHeadKLR650 Yeah but if you go with the DRZ you would have to change your username, and since it's linked to your gmail account it becomes a real life changing decision. Sheesh I wouldn't know what to do.

  • @halfthrottle Yeah I'm really holding out for a KLR650, it will also be my first bike (I'm 37). I have to wait until tax time and there was a 90' and a 99' both 30 miles from me for $1500 a piece. Damn it all to hell! BLAH!

  • @MetalHeadKLR650 Another deal will pop up, just keep your eyes open.

  • thats what bruteforce are for! but i love my KLR too!

  • Great vid! Oh for some knobbies!

  • Dakar Rally ain't got sh*t on you man!

  • "Once in a while a man has to do something difficult"

  • Oh, and thumbs up for calling upon the Power of Greyskull!

  • @gymkhanadog Could have really used a Battle Cat.

  • I salute you for getting it up the hill finally! As everyone else has said, wrong tires. Need some knobbly dual sports at least.

What tail light modulator do you have by the way?

  • 1:24 By the Power of Grayskull! LOL!

  • Haha bet the guy on the horse at 3:26 is like "lol u mad?".....haha this vid though shows that sometimes the best way to "ride" your bike is to not actually ride on it.

  • Respect!!

    (next time different tires???)

  • 4.55

  • Haha, I'm a 48kg women, This is why i can't go offroading with my GS650 alone, I would get stranded.

  • i think its time for some knobbies

  • @eagleeyes221 I've been searching for them. So far the only tire I can find that will fit my bike is the MT 60 that's on it now. Would love some knobbies.

  • Why do you only have one pannier?

  • @simon44 I lost the lid to the other one, forgot to close the latch and it blew off never to be seen again.

  • try the horse ;-) thx for the videos. good luck!

  • That was A W E S O M E ! ! ! FWIW... I have been considering a less aggressive tread on my KLR650. Now I think I will stick with the D606. Thanks for helping me make my decision ;)

  • @tumbleweedfarm I'm here for you amigo.

  • momentum woulda got u up that hill, just put ur feet on the pegs and pin it!

  • A better rear tire may help looks like you have a slick on ;)

  • chyba cos tarabani w silniku??

  • Mate that was brilliant. I am still rolling around on the floor. The horse at the end is just perfect. Perhaps trade in the two wheels for 4 legs??

    A for effort !

  • @TheFriarHenderson Damn horse really schooled me.

  • OMG Thank You! I'm not laughing at you because I know that was one hell of a day. Only, the crowd of people on the hilltop just watching you had me rolling. But then the guy riding the small horse up the hill was priceless! Keep up the fight and love seeing the real Panama. TY again.

  • Watching this from the warehouse at Ft. Belvior thinking hey need a fork lift?

  • That's a lot of FAILs and it never gets old to watch others fail! Thanks for sharing! :) Great vid!

  • "...a man needs to go outside and do something difficult" says the boy who just gave up and turned around before reaching his goal. LOL

  • I watched this in 1080p on my big screen and... Your nips are huge

  • @vindacator477 Thanks!

  • @vindacator477 I'm hoping to get sponsored by a pastie company.

  • Thats a XR650R hill.

  • Great video. Very inspirational. Almost makes me feel to take my fat, out of shape self and do something difficult. Almost....

  • I love the horse that 3:23. He's like, "Eh, this is easy."

  • You're supposed to face away from the bike and "squat" it up with straight arms, using the power of your legs, not your back muscles while facing it. ;-)

  • holly cow. nice vid. good try. hahaha.

  • holly cow. nice vid.

  • Wahoo! Nice rallying speech at the end. I think this video should be called "Gringo Fall Down Go Boom." I was also thinking it might be cool to put a little bit of narration at the beginning cuz it's hard to hear you with the water. But hey, awesome loved it!

  • @danielbeanfilms Hey big shot this ain't Hollywood. No ADR for you! I'll think about changing the title, just for you.

  • @halfthrottle Haha nice. Actually it would be awesome if you dubbed your own voice, but it was a little bit off, so it looked like a kung fu movie

  • I shouldn't laugh at pain, but it's hilarious. I've been there on my supermoto. Tried to cut through a marsh. A couple of nice country boys happened by in a pick up and helped haul me out. Lol I wish I had a camera.

  • @lauriejennifer Situations like that are the reason cameras were invented.

  • I love mud... but also love knobblies! Great effort, great vid, great guy! Thanks Ryan :)

  • wonder what the locals were thinking while they were watching?

  • @fyrdawg589 It seemed to be the most entertaining thing they had seen in a long time. No TV to watch out there.

  • great vid

  • well done

  • well im not gonna be a dead horse but dam man you were lifting that bike with your back everytime it fell. I know you know how to pick that bike up the right way. you were just killing yourself every time

  • @bordone When my bike falls gas leaks out of the filler cap, so I try to get it up as fast as I can. But yeah my back does feel a little sore right now...

  • you def need some better tires for this terrain

  • @garrittpwl Think I might have needed some paddle tires for that road.

  • @halfthrottle agreed

  • You have to grit your TEET!

Just rent a donkey and do it like those kids were doing next time :D

  • wrong tires? hahaha

  • @myronlee19 + wrong road + wrong day...

  • @halfthrottle hahaha!!! but any bad day riding is sure beats the best day at work. =)

  • Better to put your back to the bike and push off the ground with your feet. Remember your legs are stronger than your arms.

  • Note to self: next time swap bike for horse

  • @lgarvey I did offer to trade with that guy.

  • teddy roosevelt: do not pray for things to get easier but instead pray to be stronger. absolutely brilliant as icpchad says. bravo!

  • @emizuno Great quote.

  • Kudos for trying... that looked like HARD WORK!!

  • @Woodee Sucked while i was there, great now that it's over.

  • brilliant video halfthrottle, i loved your quote at the end, am going to print it off and stick it on my garage wall, will remember that quote forever, it describes my offroading, my life and me perfectly :)

the guy in the green shirt was cool for helping you :)

  • Awesome

  • LOL, bravo for going it alone, but you would be half as beat if you traveled with one more. All that running back for the camera would suck

  • @copperchopperdb Your welcome to join me for a ride anytime.

  • rear offroad tire would be nice. I almost got the same bike

  • @bradleylariviere KLR's are good bikes. Cheap, and tough.

  • Brilliant! The mud reminds me of West Virginia clay that when wet gets slippery as hell and sucks you down into it. I became exhausted in sympathy for you LOL. Love the expression on your face at 4:53 like your trying to keep it together or you'll fall right over. Thanks for the great adventures ;)

  • @stregarossa2112 Clay really sucks because you never know when it's going to take you down. It's always a surprise.

  • @stregarossa2112 Exhausted in sympathy- well said!

  • 3:22 That donkey has an aftermarket tailguard!

  • another good vid. I snickered a bit as you fought your way up. I did that with my WR last fall. you know you're exhausted when you just fall over with the bike after you just picked it up. I'm thinking you need to figure out how to mount a winch on the KLR...

tell me you had two cameras for that vid too... one would have been a lot of running back and forth.

PS: keep up these kind of videos and you won't be a "fat" guy running in the jungle for long :)

  • @EverydayRiding Just one camera, but I wasn't running back and forth. Two long shots then mixed up the angles in editing.

It is great exercise that's for sure.

  • @halfthrottle ah yes, just watched it two more times. I see the two long shots now.

nothing like fighting a bike to wear you out. the wr250r seriously wore me out yesterday, and i wasn't fighting any hills. just some mud and rocks. whee.

  • That does not look fun.

I thought your failed suicide attempt was you squatting to pee - then I remembered guys don't do that....

  • @WatchBBR Any liquid I might have had in my body was sweated out before I even started on this hill.

  • I was exhausted from just watching the video. Great show, thanks.

  • Could you imadine trying to get a 1200gs up there

  • @timzy0 In my imagination there is a tow truck.

  • great video, loved this series. smart to know when to turn around.

  • Nice one. It's good to see these kind of things to remind us all that we're, sometimes only, human.

  • Dude, one word - KNOBBIES

You made it further than I would have. Thumbs up for going to the hassle of filming this as you floundered around.

  • @dahveed284 When I was shopping I wanted to buy knobbies. Where I live my selection is pretty limited.

  • @halfthrottle I guess I take it for granted that every place would have a good selection of stuff, but apparently not. And mail order gets expensive with shipping and customs, if you can find a place that even ships to Panama.

  • @dahveed284 Not being able to shop online is high on my list of pet peeves for living in Panama.

  • @halfthrottle Yeah, that would really cramp my shopping style too. I get nearly everything for my bike via the mail and I live in a metro area of 5.5 million people, but still it can be hard to find stuff locally. So I always order it.

The sad fact is the Dunlop 606's tires I have in my garage for my KLR might have passed through the canal on the way here, yet remain difficult to find there.

I guess if you never shopped on line, you wouldn't know what you're missing.

  • @dahveed284 Yeah just about everything goes through the Canal here, but getting something back is a nightmare. I just had a set of Progressive Suspension front fork springs stolen on their way to me.

  • Hats off to you Halfthrottle. One must applaud your grit and determination. Well done.

  • @ServSwitch I love the word "Grit."

  • how hot is it there?

  • @pantherxx010 Averages 90 every day here.

  • You have tenacity...lol! I would have put that camera into cyberspace! and you carried it up the hill to reposition it.... very cool!

Did you see how clean the guys shirt was on the horse...lol!

  • @wannatipAcanoe Guy with the horse definitely has things figured out.

  • note to yourself: bring a donkey next time, LOL. nice workout! Thumbed up WAAAYY before the fake 'water-cide' :) A man's gotta do what a man's gotta do!

  • Ryan king of ASGARD!!!!

    that stuff was classic

  • well, nice, anyhow it remembers me some years back when I was in France.

I was on the road with a nice c-class (from a friend), and anyhow we lost orientation. Since I was used to go with my Mahindra 4wd anywhere, I wanted to turn the car on any wet field - went in, turned ... stucked.

My wife was looking at me as if I would be a killer or so ... even when I said: sorry!

It took us one hour to get out from there ...

so, yes: sometimes, a man needs to go outside and to do difficult things ;-)

  • Oh, good fun.. : )

  • If you keep this up you're gonna start to loose weight!!! What a struggle. Hats off to a bloke who's keen on adventure - no matter what!

  • @Bobcatonline Have to use that on the wife, "But baby if I go on more rides I'll be thinner."

  • I was out treasure hunting once and took my old VW down a steep road I knew I shouldn't have taken. When the road got too rough to go on, I managed to get turned around and for the next hour and a half, I had to pile small rocks under the tires just to get traction up the muddy road. I would manage to go about six feet at a time before having to get out and do it again. By the time I made it back out, I was soaked with sweat and I could smell the VW's tires and clutch. But hey, I made it out.

  • @MAG315 Funny how doing things we know we shouldn't do makes for great stories.

  • Aaaaahahahaaaa :D Loved it mate. It's always more difficult when you've got an audience watching, haha.

You need to get yourself a riding buddy for the tricky stuff. Although you probably hadn't planned it being THAT tricky, hehehe.

Well done though mate, looks like fun!

  • @MadStu Yeah I thought it would be a nice road the whole, since I was following that tourist map. Didn't think they would put anything hard core on in.

  • You have more patience then I do. The only thing I could say, is you were picking the bike up all wrong.

If the bike is on the right, throw the kickstand out, back up to the seat of the bike, grab on with both hands (You would be facing away from the bike) to immovable parts of the bike, Then "walk" backwards and the bike will pop right up, with no real risk of hurting your back, and taking less energy. Same for the left, except the KS goes down last. Thanks for the entertainment.

  • @phlemdog Yeah I seem to have a really hard time lifting bikes the backwards way. But I planned to make a video about the proper way to lift a motorcycle in the next few days. Mostly because so many people have commented on my lack of technique in this video.

  • @halfthrottle Oh, cool. I'll be watching for it.

  • First time I dropped my KLR, discovered just how much heavier it is than the race bikes I rode back in the 70s. DAYYYAAMMMMM!!!!

  • @SteveD328 KLR might be the world's heaviest 650cc motorcycle.

  • get new tires dude!

  • @ThePhiltastic The rear tire is new, just isn't aggressive enough I guess.

  • I am not saying they would be any better but I loved Metzeler MCE Karoo 2 Dual Sport Motorcycle Tires on my KLR. I only got about 2,500 too 3,00 miles out of them but they were great. They are made in Brazil and only cost about $60.00 dollars each. Not saying they would have made this situation any better.

  • @videogoatbird $60 is half what I paid for the Perrilli that's on there now, but in Panama not many places carry tires big enough for the KLR. So my options are very limited.

  • @halfthrottle Well do a little research on the Karoo....see if you can find them...I think you will be impressed...I would get 4 backs and two fronts at a time to rat hole.

  • Damn... having to pick up that bike and force it to move in that jungle heat/humidity must have been TERRIBLE. =[

  • @xThePilfer Yeah in that heat you sweat like crazy while doing nothing. Heaving the bike around was hell.

  • very well done indeed sir

  • And you're still filming and moving the tripod around !!! Man, kudos for that sequence, I mean it !!!

  • @penguinrobby Thanks amigo, I was so tired but still wanted a good video out of it. Who would have thought riding a motorcycle could be so sweaty.

  • should have stole the donkey.. it seemed to do fine...:0 maybe a day when there is no mud you might have to try it again..

  • @kary1982v6 I plan to, might need to wait until rainy season is finished.

  • wow man that's brutal. What an adventure :)

AND you stressed about shooting it (video) that's awesome
