  • I like diony canete, but I don't believe Eskrima is the best, although I do like to use it. It's effective for me.

  • the knife techniques in eskrima is the best part to me...in real life situation grappling and boxing can only take you so far.

  • I love how the master is like all aloof and quiet in the corner but he'll probably be like a demon when challenged in a fight.

  • Doce Pares is like the Knights of the Round Table

  • i want to know who is the guy 1:46 remind me of my grandfather, because my grandfather was traind in doce paris his name eliuterio nanoy alias terio he is a tire seller along c padilla street i hope family of canete knows it thanks godbless

  • sheeeesh, cacoy was so young then....

  • wow! reminds me of home. this place is close to my place. oh, well, i've been in cacoy's place (way back). a friend of my father's...:) thanks for the upload.

  • It"s FILIPINO NOT PHILIPPINO

  • havent seen this since i was a kid, thanks for this!

  • 2:58 WTF

  • ....AAAnnd its a loooot of FUUUUNN ! ! !!

  • muchas gracias para compartir! saludos a mis hermanos Filipinos desde España

  • These people are Cebuanos, the people of the Island of Cebu. They speak a language called Visaya. It is a remnant of an old Hindu Kingdom centered in Indonesia called Sri Visaya. Yes, the Philippines was Hindu along with most of Southeast Asia, e.g., Indonesia, Malaysia, Cambodia, Thailand, Laos, and Burma. This is before the arrival of Buddhism and the towel heads, Mohammedans.

  • @FishEaster yes kali escrima are originated in cebu they are decendants of great empire called Sri vijayan empire

  • Do you know if anyone can get a dvd of this somewhere?

  • why do i have a craving for a candy cane now? =/

  • it's filipino, My friends always argue about it.... I have to keep telling them... ugh

  • It is not becoming the national sports of the philippines any longer. Arroyo declared it to be the national sports in 2010.

  • vintage!!

  • the number one killer is Crispy Pata

  • actually to everybody out there when it is spelled Filipino it is describing the people, when it is spelled Philippines it is talking about the islands take my word for it i am a Filipino

  • Since it's adaptation to the training regime of the Philippine Marines, it took escrima 1 decade to be recognised as a national sport. .

  • its sad to say that this martial art is not fully embraced by the Pilipinos now a days, i've only seen a very few practice houses or dojo promoting this art... and most of the Pilipino youths refer Korean Taekwondo or Japanese Karate. how i wish that they teach Arnis, escrima or kali in P.E classes in Elementary or High school. because this martial art is one of our greatest treasure.

and it sad to see that there are more foreigners (non Pilipino) getting better in escrima than Pilipinos. :(

  • @Hhunterr18 But it is the same with our native scripts or native costumes and customs. It doesn't matter. It's because of the US American influence in our educational system and media.

  • @GaolisVideoLog

yes... well i always believe that it is not to late for us to turn the our culture back on top... i've seen alot of individuals who are interested with our native script (baybayin). it is sad to say that our culture is fading very fast. but i think we can still make a different.. thanks for giving me an idea...

  • @Hhunterr18 I hope so too. I noticed that many of my generation, and those that are in HS now have started to do some research on their own, since our schools don't provide these pieces information. I think, if we encourage them, show them, then we can advance. I believe, only then will we be able to live upto Rizal's expectations "Ang hindi marunong lumingon sa pinanggalingan ay hindi makakarating sa pinaroroonan"

  • @Hhunterr18 that's not exactly true we just don't show it

  • salute to the family, salute to the aficionados, ang galing ng lugar nyo, ang galing ng teknik nyo, sana makakilala man lang ako ng kahit isa sa inyo. more power!

  • this documentary is classic.

  • listen carefully to the last quote of this video everyone! that's the key to defeating most opponents. good vid, liked it!

  • fuck change your system if you want to improve your country.magti-is kayo diyan.WHO EVER SET TO BE A PRESIDENT THIS COMING 2010 GANON PA RIN PINAS WALANG ASINYO!!!!!

  • kala ko si ka ernie baron. si gary lising pla

  • kala ko si ka ernie baron

  • i wish they'd show more than doce pares, considering that there are less sport-oriented groups out there that need to be addressed. on top of that, alot of eskrima groups use pure filipino techniques rather than japanese variations. i have respect for doce pares, but they frustrate and bore me.

  • I like martial arts, but I think that these documentarys from the 80tis are not so good. Its more talking about nothing, bla bla bla bla and showing endless of filming with 1 or 2 practiciners... A ducumentary should be verry clear, simple and direct so people who dont know so much about the martial can understand.

  • ITS FILIPINO

  • For those haters!!!!!!!

Kikoy will just kick your ass if you touch him!!!!!!

I'm a filipino,I will kick your hater ass!!!!!

  • back in does days we dont use sticks we use machete..now that we use sticks the fight gets longer..i mean imagine if they use machete...1 hit your gone..

  • @Don0chi0cho mabuhay!

  • 1 of da luzon group traded wid da japs while trading wid ming dynsaty 1400+

  • this is cheap why is that other guy always getting push around????

    totally wrong

  • wow cebu is now different compared to it was once before.

  • Comment removed

  • its because our dumb "whore" president would make boxing a national sport, rather than our own martial art which has historical and cultural significance. i got used to it...

  • but thats the only sport where we have a good fighter. i mean that he is known everywhere... most of us are lack of education... Philippines have no future anyways so why wasting time for this:P

  • yo darkj3am maybe ur country has no future if u say tht my hometown has no future. Maybe you should back of and stop being mean and horrible. Maybe your just jelouse. I mean a pinoy champion won in boxing. Philippines is a Catholic country and if your a filippino maybe you should give respect like all others giving respect to different people!

  • Not only won, he is the best ever.

  • kung Pilipino ka, mahiya ka naman! Like, you're English really stinks and then you have the gall to say the "Philippines have no future"?

  • soo old school....... XD but i like it!!!

  • you spelt FILIPINO wrong... lol

  • It used to be commonly spelt as the clip's title has it in England when the program was made.

  • mostly a family way of fighting!there are still lots of fighting style that is still not known in the philippines

  • is that sting narrating?

  • their multiple strikes are speedy.. i don't think i'll be able to count out the blows if i'm hit with that tech.

  • Thanks for posting ,it's a gem

  • Major thing that stops people from fighting is thier pride and image. If they would stop caring and focused they would have no problem.

  • National Sport of the Philippines is Sipa..

  • I thought it was hookin

  • yeah thats true, its a pretty hardcore sport as well

  • aus :) mabuhay

  • LOL, its FILIPINO =P

  • Worst spelling of Filipino ever!

  • HAHA

  • Comment removed

  • Thank you for your comment, I'll direct you to what I tell everyone who makes this comment to look at.

The opening title, I am merely quoting this.

  • @bakitwhycom Filipino is the english way of spelling it in the Philippines they dont have an f in there alphabet

  • @bakitwhycom Its a reasonable mistake considering filipino people are from the Philippines

  • @bakitwhycom - The Pinoys cannot pronounce the letter P. So, this is how it is said, "Pee Lee Pee No". I know because that is part of part.

  • @FishEaster BS

  • LOLZ! BBC is wrong! Eskrima or Arnis will never beat Billiards and Boxing as the most favorite sport of us Filipinos! Hahaha! Though Arnis is inherently ours and we are proud of it, but what can I say I love to see Manny Paqiao!

  • Uhm basketball is more played than billiards.

  • I know dude but its a sport where we actually stand a chance in winning in the International Stage. Hehehe!

  • if we were just a lil bit taller, you'd most likely see alot of us in NBA lol

  • Grandmaster Cacoy. A great great man and true escrimador.

    Peace

    @_*

  • Wow finally some one spoke as the narrator i was just expecting something like the demo would last 4 parts

  • 100 fights! not lost even once man thats sweet a mark of a true master

  • We are proud to be pinoy IDOL kita Master Diony

  • wow!!! Sir Diony, im very impressed! grabe gyod. thanks for posting this video.

  • practise martial art 1st before you comment lols!!!

  • thats the real Phillippine style martial arts IDOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I've always wanted to know about this martial art, because I've heard at my old karate class that the weapon is made in the Philippines, but I never knew what it was called until now. Thanks for the awesome video!

  • i want to join Doce Pares but not

enough time and money i wish they

will have a branch at our school CIT

  • sakita siguro ug matapsingan ka. ouch!

  • People from around the world... Just a heads up... Don't expect to find Philippine cultural richness or deep Filipino cultural awareness in Manila (you could but in the Museum). That's the worst place to look for it. The best place to go is in Visayas and Mindanao regions like Cebu and Davao. In Cebu nowadays, there's a staggering population of dreadlocked Rastas. Rastas in Davao are few but fused with consciousness of untampered Indigenous roots that date back as early as the Sri Vijayan Era.

  • The worst thing is that your comment is so bias just observer the video properly..x fatctor

  • By the way you spelled filipino wrong its not spelled Philippino its FILIPINO just giveing you a heads up. and no i dont mean to sound rude

  • Thank you, yes MANY people have pointed that out to me. I'll tell you what I tell everyone else, please take note of the opening title in the video.

I am aware of that spelling and I simply "quoted" the title regardless of whether its the correct or incorrect way of spelling it, because thats the way it should be done (in an academic sense).

Thanks for the comment and I hope you enjoyed the video =)

  • @Akab6 Hey, did you hear about the spelling of the video? Just messing with you :)

  • @ZacoWhacko Filipino is the english spelling the dont have an f in there alphabet in fact ist not even pronounced with the f sound its prounounced with a p sound ie pilipino

  • @ZacoWhacko I like that "Philippino" spelling of filipino. It is a stylist. since our country is called and spelled Philippines why not call the inhabitants philippinos. Why not make philippinos as a colloquial spelling.

  • @dado112761 When the Spaniards invaded what we now know as the Philippines, they named it Las Islas Filipinas after their king, Felipe II of Spain. When America conquered Las Islas Filipinas, they renamed it the Philippines because Philip is the English equivalent of Felipe. The next time the Philippines is conquered and renamed by the whim of the conqueror, would you want to be called whatever that new name is? Would that be stylish too?

  • I've seen and been in this kind of training here in Davao. Though kahit di Doce Pares, still the practice/demo is painful. Just imagine if you got hit by that stick at full swing in actual fight. I'm pretty sure you'll end up in the hospital if your lucky to be alive!

  • ahhhh Cebu my homwtown:D

  • is Cacoy still alive? Diony did a demo at my school three years ago and he's fuckin awesome!

  • its my hometownnnnnnnn!!! thanks for posting this video, very informative... regards sa inyong lahat miss kuna doce pares people!!!

  • God bless

  • dang. i want a 12 pares shirt. my fambam is from cebu =]

  • lol. his rattan looks like a candy cane. XD

  • Answer to previous question"Japanese influence".

The Canete brothers were all involved in Judo and karate back in the 1930's. Cacoy has 3rd dan in aikido also. Adopted kata as a training method from Japanese style. AFAIK the only Filipino grp to do kata. Made Doce Pares very effective. I trained with Cacoy in the late '80's. Terrific experience. I'm a student of Glen Gardiner and Vince Palumbo. Great knife work too. hi Alice- Townsville here!

  • Greetings to Manong Cacoy Canete and his supporters.....from Alice Springs Australia

  • Am a member of Doce Pares long time ago, it's nice to see cacoy in youtube. I was his student back in the 80's. I miss his humor and exhibition. Is he still alive?

  • I've seen a more recent "documentary" if you can call it that, on Eskrima and he was still alive, he wasn't the head of the school anymore (one of his sons in this video was) but he was still around.

  • @Borkybok yes he still alive, but he is not so well.

what do you think about dionisio canete??

it's the truth about he was student of momoy canete??

  • @KaliUSA ofcourse he is !you twit! momoy is his uncle for christ sake... you better do more reaserch

  • Comment removed

  • @kenshin9518 This KaliUSA is Claudio Murelli. He never met or talked to GM Cacoy and he got the nerve to say that GM Cacoy is "still alive, but he is not so well". He only knows GM Cacoy from youtube.

  • @MrBetlogmo

    Who is this idiot?

I am a student of Master Claudio and my master

    ashole

  • proud to be pinoy and a cebuano.. ehehe

  • ang badoy nyo,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

  • master momoy canete is the beast on this art if u guys know he is the older brother of diony :D

  • very nice. those stick looks like candy canes.

  • I think they've been taped up, i need to tape my sticks up, it protects them from damage

  • silat is different from escrima!

  • this is unpure silat

  • I think silat came first. The Filipino peoples adopted it, and it change during the Spanish period accomodating european fencing. Its a true mix of East and West.

  • yeah basta , thats a possible conclusion.

  • movie seems from 1980's, Cebu looks a lot diffetent now lol.

  • how old is this vid? their hair seems old fashioned

  • Awesome, g'na watch all of these parts. Thank you

  • My pleasure, Im just glad people enjoy them as much as I do :)

  • you spelled it wrong! its filipino!

  • Again and for the last time people! lol

Please refer to the spelling in the opening sequence. Also correct me if Iam wrong but their is no letter 'F' in Spanish...

  • There is an 'F' in Spanish (a sub-language in Philippines) like in fuego=fire and an 'F' in Tagalog (spoken Filipino Language). Philippino and Philipino, are, at most, incorrect ways of spelling Filipino. Pilipino would a different spelling of the language called Filipino (standardized version of Tagalog). The video caption either is wrong or they were trying to make some sort of weird pun.

  • yes we fight with our fists, try looking up Yaw-Yan

  • do they eva fite with their fists ay??

  • yea, ive mostly seen it for mostly defense rather than offense.

  • this looks like a very effective martial art - it's been specifically designed for street fighting. It has many elements from the japanese martial arts thou

  • eskrima is an old martial art. . in the 15th century. . i don't think there is a japanese influence. . there is no contact between the japanese and the pre-spanish filipinos before, and if there were, they could have not landed in Cebu. . this is the art that killed the Portuguese Explorer Ferdinand Magellan. . mabuhi ka LAPU-LAPU ^^

  • Ok, thanks for the information. But as far as I know Eskrima has evolved a lot since the 15th century

  • it was til, our grandfather introduced his own ESKRIDO which is a combination of the japanese JUDO and Eskrima. which makes it more effective in very close range fighting.

  • I think it's quite possible the Japanese martial arts had some influence in the modern styles of Eskrima/Kali/Arnis. There was a Japanese invasion on the Philippines in World War Two. The FMA is quite open to inovation , if a Judo sweep works in a stickfight, why not use it and add to the system? Its one the aspects I like the most in the art.

  • huh what? no contacts with the japanese? wow, interesting... ever heard of "dilao"? actually, those dilao were referred to the japs. and if you are really paying attention to your history classes or if you are being attentive or even resourceful, you'll even shocked to know that we flips haven't only made contacts with the chinese, malaysians, arabs and hindus but also them, the dilao or japs. where were you during your history class? one advice though, do your homework!

  • japanese influence??? you bitch! its better than samurai's idiot!

  • instead of being an idiot you can just explain your point. everybody can swear in the internet but I would like to see how brave you are when you are face to face with someone. And you should respect every martial art as there is always something useful to be learned even from the "samurai's idiot"

  • actually it's true the style evolve according to the enemy did you know these style were used against jap soldiers

  • I wasn't aware of that but I am now, thanks. DId this happen in WWII or earlier?

  • as earlier as the spaniards arrive and yes in WW2 they were used against jap soldiers led by which I believe one of the founding fathers of doce pares although he and his men were defeated in the end due to diff in weps

  • oh snaps!!! this is the first guy thats been through a knife fight especially 7 on 1 knife fight, ok i wanna learn how to learn how to knife fight from him

  • This sh*t is tight.

  • YOU SPELLED FILIPINO WRONG

  • If you observe they spell it Philippino at the beginning of the documentary. Don't freak out man.

  • putang inang gago shet! hahaha

  • guys we all got your point hehehe.

  • its Filipino or Pilipino, in the Filipino alphabet there is no letter F.

  • ummm... r u stupid? Filipino alphabet has more letters than the American's alphabet.

  • u really r stupid aren't u. look up the filipino alphabet. there is no f you stuip poser. they adopted the f from the spanish and english language. what filipino word starts with f thats not spanish. u stupid ignorant fuck. and thats not how u spell filipino or pilipino. u dont spell it with a ph. u probably never even been to the philippines or speak tagalog.

  • I like your attitude man, keep the hate burning!

  • Dude calm down, dont expect everybody to know how to spell "filipino". Dont pose like you know everything.

  • boy you really are stupid aren't you. if your pilipino then you need to know your history you fuckin poser.

  • u spelled filipino wrong

  • In the beginning they spelled Filipino wrong.

  • thats fine skypants9 as long as they know that filipinos exist on this planet...

  • i used to take Kuntaw..and i practiced Eskrima. One of my teachers actually was in a hand to hand fight in Vietnam and he used Arnis and such.

  • Very very true!

  • no actually in Eskrima, you first learn to use the sticks, then the sword, and then the dagger.

Then after u master them all you can learn to use an combination of them. All the swoed technique in Eskrima is practice through the sticks.

So when you know how to use the sticks, you'll know how to use the swords.

  • Trophy = Breathing + scars.

  • pinoy powerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

  • you can visit CACOY DOCE PARES ESKRIMA in youtube, and you can see more actions 25 years after the WAY OF THE WARRIOR DOCUMENTARY...

  • u know the sticks u use can break bones and rip tendons right?

  • these sticks can also send us straight to hell

  • nice...

  • the way he uses the stick makes me think this martial art techniques were originally created for swordfighting. A
