Great clip, I'd never seen this. Kind of a a quintessential Todd track. he's without a doubt the best white soul guy ever from Philadelphia, among other things. On this one, he's got that trademarked melodic sense going on...great stuff. Funny, I saw him on Daryl's House recently, and was struck by how similar Daryl and Todd are vocally... except for one thing. Todd's just way better, more soulful and interesting. Not to dis D, but if I wanted Liberace, I woulda gone to Vegas.

Youtube should show more before and after stuff in these vids. After the commercial when the band was waiting, Todd looks at the camera and says "Ladies and gentlemen, NOW we have a show"...referring to the lovely backup singers ;)
I saw this tour (Nearly Human), four times - twice in New Orleans, then the two shows that closed the tour in SF. I remember the night this was broadcast for the first time, too. I've since watched this video many, many times, and every time I do, all I can think about is how glorious they all looked and sounded. The shows were such incredibly soulful experiences, and left an indelible mark on me. Of course, w/ Vince Welnick longer w/ us, a proper reunion tour couldn't occur, but .. I can dream.
phew!! i luv this video...todd is AMAZING...the singing is the verybest and the dancing...i luv todd...he looks great! what a TALENT!!!!!!!!!!!words, music, dancing and HOT!! could never get better for me....i luv this song always...i luv the todd yells...thanx for the post!
Nearly Human is a classic Todd album. It's stacked right from the top, with "For the Want of a Nail," this and "Parallel Lines," and includes other ballads you can't stay away from. Great elpee/disc. But this song really soars. Todd REALLY belts out the final verse and chorus here; great showing.
I've ignored this guy the last 40 years and recently started watching him on here. Now I cant stop. I bought Hermit from mink hollow when it cameout. His talent is unbelievable. I'm sorry I missed all those great years
great performance of an infinitely "cool song" very unusual, thoughtful lyrics...makes me think...hmmm...i feel these lyrics....oooeeyyyy!! if i ever need a reason to smile...boogey on todd!!!
man what a good performance...i saw this tour back in 89 at Bally's in Atlantic City without ever hearing the record. Needless to say i owned it the very next day. Got to meet him and michelle at the show.
Todd is such a MASTER & GENIUS.Overlooked Ignored, and Misunderstood.

Todd never ceases to amaze.......that's why I've been a dedicated fan for many years. Sometimes he tries things that I don't care for, but.......whatever! He always tries......never gives up. He has made himself a figure for all to look up to. Name one musician that tries as hard as Todd. His music rocks my ass! And has givin me memories for a life time!
Absolutely amazing, Todd is in top form, the girls look gorgeous, great performance from the Late Show band too! I wish there was a similar live version of Fidelity too.
just when you thought todd couldn't sing one more 'heartbreak-song' ; he pulls out something like this!!! i just wish that i would have the 'love of my life' in my arm's wwhen he sings
@jedberten - agreed! But in my next life, I want to be a back up singer for Todd. Specifically, the blonde in the middle!!! Dave, as I recall, LOVED them and 'tried to steal them', back in the day. Personally, I flipped for Todd back in 1974 in the Cosmic record store when I first picked up "AWATS". From that point on, until today - he's been the consummate artiste. Can't count up how many times I've seen his shows, in all his incarnations. Now well into his sixties, still has it!
so much good music- all the way back to moogy klingman, through utopia and then todd solo stuff- very rarely commercial and he very rarely tried to write a hit-
Jenny is the daughter of Maria "Midnight At The Oasis" Muldaur. Michele Gray (now Rundgren) sang with the Tubes. Shandi wrote and sang TOUGH LOVE in the Karate Kid.
I was floored when I saw this performance on Letterman. Compared to other "popular" performer's efforts it was as though Mozart had taken the stage. Also, I remember when I saw this tour live. I couldn't take my eyes off of Shandi. Her moves, her beauty... SHE'S A GODDESS!
Definition of music - this! Amazing performance. Truly unbelievable by today's standards. Letterman's band must have been beside themselves to play with such talent. Sunboyfun hit the nail right on the head.
Amazing! Todd and company could have easily done a cookie-cutter tune for a live TV performance, and instead chose a song that is complex and ambitious. Great harmony and ensemble work. BTW, is Jenny Muldaur the daughter of Maria Muldaur (of "Midnight at the Oasis" fame?).
Seems like yesterday. Todd was delighted at Dave's comment of so nice, really nice. "because he usually says" "nice job"! That and he told Dave he could borrow the girls!
And so Dave DID borrow the Girlz AKA "The Worlds' Most Dangerous Backup Singers" as they were referred to after this night! They (Jenni Muldaur - daugther of Singer Maria , Michele Grey...Rundgren now!, & Shandi Cinnamon were part of Paul & the band for about 2 weeks.
One might suggest you do the same. Get a grip. You are a Runndgren fan and that offends you? He is the funniest pervert in music! You do not recall the banter after the song no doubt.
Dont like everything that Todd comes up with, but love him for never taking the safe and obvious route like so many others. This is a great song though. He can write stuff like this in his sleep probably!!
I loved this show!!! I have the VHS from when he was on Letterman. I also took my 7 year old son and a friend to see him LIVE at the Tower Theater in Upper Darby to see this concert (10th row on the floor) when Nearly Human was first released. Excellent show!!!
One of his best songs! I heard the live song before I heard the version on "Nearly Human", so I was surprised at the difference in tempo. The album version is great, but this was really meant to be a faster song; I prefer the "Live in Japan' version much better.
I had to turn this off half way through - the guitar player in the house band made me want to pewk with his antics. The guy obvioulsy has some ego problems and couldnt bare the attention being on anyone else.
I have to disagree. Paul Schaffer's band loves TR, and the guitarist was probably just really into this demanding song. He must have practiced all day...
I agree.. he's just really into his part. But I can see how some might construe it as being annoying, though it's a stretch to read motivation into it.
AND NOW TODD IS BROKE! NOT COOL!

I have to admit that I really do love Todd Rundgren's music, such a talented Musician.
It's hard to put him into a certain genre due to the fact that he shows and showed a hughe diversity in his music.
It's even hard to tell if he is a ,,star" or ,,not". :-)
