...and another thing: am i the only person who's ever wondered whether the band's very public outing of topper's drug problem didn't have anything to do with the fact that this brilliant musician never really worked again. (ok, 'waking up', but...) i'm not saying that drugs are good, but c'mon, a lot of people have managed to combine them with a career in rock...but topper just stopped (playing, that is, not using). did the *reputution* his former band mates had given him play a part in this?
Great one off! Wish Paul, Mick & Topper would get together & do some shows as a trio. Do a partial reunion just doing songs the 3 sang. Sucks Joe died shortly before the induction of the Clash into the RNR hall of fame. They were actually talking about doing a reunion at the time when they did the Westway To The World (Clash Documentary). Ce La Vi.
i know joe was great, but I was thinking something similar to how the Who have Zak Starkey playing drums for them now. Not replacing, just filling in.
i agree. you can't replace him, it would be a different band, not that there's anything wrong with that i guess...even though this video is great, it just reminds me of the spanish verse that joe would sing echoing mick's english verse, how do you replace that? how do you replace the attitude? the issue is that every song, every note was written with passion, conviction and soul...when those three things are removed from the equation, what do you really have? a legendary band without its legend.
It's like saying Scott Weiland & Dave Kushner were filling in for Axl Rose and Izzy Stradlin in Velvet Revolver .. it's just not a logical thing to say.
this is nothing to do with substitution. substitution is what was *attempted*, to little success, after st. joe n co. kicked mick jones n topper headon out of the clash (if topper was on smack, wtf was joe on to make that decision? ok, don't bother to tell me, i've read all the books.) tony james was part of a scene that launched punk rock in london; he co-founded generation x, wrote king rocker, dancing with myself, russian roulette etc., played with thunders n nolan, etc., etc... he's cool ; )
It's not the same without Joe's crazy Spanish backing vocals! But I'm sure he would've appreciated this reunion of Mick and Topper.

Well I heard that Paul was hesistant about playing the RNR Hall Of Fame, said he didn't feel it was the spirit of The Clash to play such a big event.
rockerazz8 3 years ago
You heard wrong. Everyone but Joe was at the RNR HOF. The only reason Joe wasn't cause he had recently passed away before the induction ceremonies.
prodigyofpeace1983 3 years ago
I didn't say he didn't go, I just read in an interview with him that he wasn't sure about it. I could still be wrong though.

That would be so kick ass.
I would travel from seattle to england just to see them.

Who thinks there should Be a Clash reunion, with Tony James substituting for Joe?
dark622 4 years ago
no... Joe just can't be substituted by anybody, he was too unique person

No idea who Tony James is. There is no substitute for Joe Strummer.
HeathInClearLake 3 years ago
tony james is an old friend of mick and i believe he was in the band generation x.
grrranger175 3 years ago 4
Tony isn't a substitute for Strummer
Carbon/Silicon are a completely different band.
It's like saying Scott Weiland & Dave Kushner were filling in for Axl Rose and Izzy Stradlin in Velvet Revolver .. it's just not a logical thing to say.

yeah, I hear that.
Or saying that the guys who were in the Mescaleroes with Joe Strummer were just filling in for Paul, Mick and Topper.

Rocco Writes: "... a lot of people have managed to combine them (drugs) with a career in rock."
I Respond: Jimi Hendrix, Keith Moon, Johnny Thunders, Sid Vicious, Janis Joplin ... just to name a few.

Maybe sid should be removed from that though....
