okay so this trailer made every thing clear to me this game timeline is before Rapture because Rapture was in 1960 (Rapture) and 1970 (Rapture 2). the little town under the water in the beginning said 1875 so this is about 100 years before Rapture.

It looks like a great game from what i've seen so far, but it doesn't seem like it has the same fear factor as in the previous two games (I know they're not that scary, but they do have something that gives you a little fear). Underwater is a scary scene without crazy people running around killing each other to get adam. So I feel like if it is going to be a horror sort of game there needs to be something else to set in a little fear.

@MegaDanielibarra it was a pretty clever move on their part, i mean i love the city of rapture and all, but it was making people think oh man three games in a row underwater, same city?? and then boom its 1893 and in the sky, it made the reveal 100 times better to me, and alot of people. and also when the betterman guy crushed the big daddy figurine under his foot, implying they are just more badass and more of a threat.

Rapture can only take so much damage, plus by the end of Bioshock 2, do we really wanna keep going down to the same old underwater city over and over? The mystery of it would just get stale.

@Littlereble it's not. This is in another universe. And this takes place before Bioshock. It's in the 1920's I think. While Bioshock takes place in the 60's and 70's.

BioShock Infinite takes place in 1912, but don't see why it has to be in a different universe... Columbia could be referring to the District of Columbia, and besides, they're flying the American flag and have the kinds of weapons that were available back then.
