  • Dude great video KaliGman...im begging my wife for a spyder as i type this...keep em coming.

  • Who on earth gave this video thumbs down???

  • Are you a big guy?(height weight)Hard to tell from the video.Just wondering cause you have fast hands and i have never seen anyone over 200lbs with really quick hands.

  • @cheeco8 I am a medium sized guy and weigh about 175 lbs.

  • Nice video. I use a small dos pontas made from carabao horn. Can't be detected by a metal detector. i always carry it with no problem. KALI FTW.

  • finally someone that knows what his talking about .

  • Hi KaliGman,

I just wanted to thank you for this review. This review helped me decide to purchase a Lava, and I must say that I am very happy with it.

I have trained in Inayan eskrima for some time, and so I found your video very helpful. I am still amazed at how strongly this knife locks into the hand for traps. It is by far the best knife I have ever used for trapping. Great review, especially due to the fact that it is tailored for the FMA enthusiast!

  • Very nice and smooth. I worry about your partner though, training with a live blade. I would hate to be cut with one of those Spydies myself, they have wicked edges!

  • LIve blade training can be dangerous. Notice, though, that we used the knife closed, with my fingers wrapped around the back of the blade making it virtually impossible to open the knife, for the majority of the video. I stopped the action as soon as I opened the blade, and I opened the blade merely to demonstrate that I could have opened it at any time during the drill. The Lava does have a very sharp edge.

  • I just have to point out again that people who

negatively comment and criticize videos of

this nature (ie his footwork sucks...) almost

NEVER have videos of their own. And NEVER

have anything positive to contribute to the

youtube community, and I'd guess to society

    in general.

Anyways cool vid on how a little knife can do

    a lot.

  • nice, you can use one of those stanley box knives the same way im assuming.

  • Yes, you can use a box knife in a similar manner. The Lava happens to have superb ergonomics, is made of premium materials and with great attention given to its assembly, fit and finish, so I prefer it. These kind of techniques can be used with any folding knife or even a box cutter, though. Thanks for viewing.

  • this is vary nice knife and a video To

  • excellent demo!

  • ignore the e-haters. your expertise is greatly appreciated and i purchased a lava based largely on this and a few other videos. it was pricey but i don't regret it at all. have you ever handled a spyderco scorpius? the handle reminds of of the lava's but overall it's a bit larger...i can't decide which i like better.

  • The Scorpius is a good knife, but just not one of my favorites. There are other Spydercos that are in the same size range as the Scorpius that I prefer. The Lava, being so tiny yet with good ergonomics for "serious social" usage, is kind of a pocket pit bull. Of course, individual hand size, techniques of usage, and preferences vary.

  • what others in that size range do you like? i used to carry the scorpius every day until i had more than one person tell me it was "scary looking", which was also a big reason why i downsized to the lava.

  • The Delica III lightweight, Delica IV Stainless Steel, Delica IV Wave, and especially the Schempp Small Persian.

  • Wow, impressive stuff! KaliGman, I've learned from your posts over at the Spydie forums, and it's great to see your work on video. You can move with and manipulate a knife better than most can move with just empty hands. Don't let those internet commandos get to you too much; stupidity can be found in any area of subject matter.

  • Thanks for the feedback.

  • There is a condensed version of a video regarding some work with the Spyderco Kris that I have placed here on YouTube. There is a better quality version of this video and another video on the Kris at the Albo Kali Silat website. These videos explain a lot about how to use the Spyderco Kris. If you are speaking about swords, there are videos on the website utilizing barongs, but no kris sword, as of yet. What exactly are you looking for? I may be able to film something to address it.

  • Just because you are old and claim to have experience it doesn't mean you know Jack. I BTW why don't you think that the police around the world don't wear their guns down at their knee. Furthermore the way you stand isn't a true horse stance nor is it a true wing chun or jkd stance. Your stance is a very unstable stance, and I have practice kali for awhile care to tell everyone what that stance is called?

  • What is your experience? Practice kali for awhile? RIght. Wing chun and jkd are not kali. As for handguns around the knee, I guess you never saw a tactical or "drop holster" for SWAT--the ones that go on the lower thigh so they will clear the SWAT body armor like I wore for a few years? A front horse stance is unstable in a straight on confrontation. As for the stance that I am using, I guess you don't understand body mechanics. Novice Internet Commando Trolls are boring. U B banned.

  • Well, I am not a Novice Internet Commando Troll, and don't usually post. What I am is a long-time Wing Chun practitioner, and I agree with your comment about the horse being unstable in a straight on confrontation. macguyver4u clearly does not know much about WC, or JKD for that matter. If you were doing WC, which you were not, I would applaud your stance work and centerline control, but I digress. Thanks for the video. I was looking for a carry knife, and this helps immensely.

  • Thanks for the feedback. I have a lot of respect for Wing Chun (and JKD). Good Wing Chun people normally have very good stability and body mechanics when they work. If you pick up a Lava, or any Spyderco, you will not be disappointed. The fit and finish is great, the designs are excellent, and the company backs its products with a lifetime warranty.

  • Interesting. And your experience level is? Perhaps you would care to post a video response and show your technique? Of course, I see by your profile that you have uploaded no videos and are 28 years old, which means I have been training as long as you have been alive. Keep in mind that: a)I mentioned on the video that I was not doing footwork so that the camera could keep us in frame b)I have used the arts in real combat, at a local and federal law enforcement level. I'm still here. Hmmm

  • A couple of observation here his hand technique sucks, I won't even go into the poor feet work. The way he had to bend down to reach for the knife and feel for it, he would get owned in a real fight with anyone who semi knew what he was doing.

  • Hi,

I have been wondering why are you using spyderco knives for MA (not just SD, but MA)? Almost all spyderco folders are made as cutting tools while there are a lot combat/tactical folders in various sizes and designs made for combat/tactical actions. And I realy want to know the serious answer, not "everything can be used as weapon".

  • I use Spyderco folders because of the strength of the locks, quality of the knives (fit and finish is excellent), cutting performance of the blades, and the fact that the company stands behind its products if you ever need to use the lifetime warranty. I also recommend Emerson Knives, for similar reasons. Many of the other "tacticool" knives out there are more hype than performance, often with "features" that add nothing to performance but appeal to many "keyboard commandos."

  • Nice explanations and great techniques.

    Keep up the good work.

  • Ive always been into knifes, can u folks send me a messaage and explain to me what this knife or just fighting technique is?

  • The knife is a Spyderco Lava, designed by Chad Los Banos. You can see more details about it on Spyderco's website or on Chad's. As for the martial art, it is Albo Kali Silat, a Filipino Martial Art (FMA) focusing on stick, knife and empty hand combat. More information is available on the Albo Kali Silat website.

    Tuhan Holloway

  • Really like videos that promote the efficacy of a small knife. You don't need a bowie to do some serious damage. Kudos!
