This was so true and real. When my auntie died this is exactly what we did. Sometimes you're just to shocked to cry. Sometimes you laugh. Sometimes it's all you can do.
I'm sorry, but this scene is just SO perfect and accurate. My grandmother died about a month ago, and at her funeral and wake, my cousins and I would start hysterically laughing over the most trivial things. We were extremely sad, but it was a way to cope.
I love GA and how incredibly true to life the show can be.
I love this scene. When I feel like utter shit, I burst into such laughter with tears streaming down my face, exactly like this scene. And then I stop laughing and sometimes it goes to crying, but sometimes it don't. People always look at me like I'm crazy. This scene made me realise that it's not horrible, but a 'natural' reaction. So thank you, Grey's.
I loved this scene because of a story my mom once told me. My mother lost her cousin to a car crash. When they told her about her cousin's death, she was incredibly devastated. However, for some unknown reason, she couldn't stop laughing. Maybe she was in shock, or she had some sort of defense mechanism that made her laugh. Strange... the way we can react to an emotional blow as strong as this one.
Shonda's worst death ever, it had to be with George a character whos been with the gang since the begining. The laugh scene was just stupid, yes laugh cuz this was the last time I watched Grey's since.
This is actually how a lot of people would react in a situation like this. I lost one of my best friends in a car accident, then two days later my mother passed away, then the very next day her chihuahua died (I know, just a dog, but still)...all I could do was burst into laughter.
They're just laughing at basically how ridiculous everything has been for the past month or so. So numb to the point that it's not even possible for them to express the sense of grief they're feeling until later on. This scene is hilarious as it is but somewhat aching to see that George is no longer around to laugh with them.
i think at this point they realize they are living in a tv show. post-it marriages, cancer to a woman who still look like a model, dramatic bus accidents and everyone sleeping with each other
Except Izzie, I don't know what's so funny and they are laughing!! I was so angry when I first saw the scene because I was waiting for respect!!! But at least it was funny!
GHE DOSNT DISERV TO DIE NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONOOOOO NO HE SAVED THAT GIRLS LIFE NO IS NOT TRUE NO IZZIE Y DIDNT U DIE SHE DIDNT WANT TO LIVE ANY MORE YYYYY!!!!!!!!!!
@StupidBlech O'Malley got hit by a bus on his way to volunteering to the US army. He got hit because the bus was gonna hit the redhead but he pushed her out.
this shocked me to the core! i did not expect to see this. when alex was like ' dude omalley got hit by a bus' i was like :OOOO and yet i couldnt help but laugh, my GOD!!! i loved izzy's line 'she never stops crying :P
this is not disrespectful in anyway. George would have WANTED this; these ARE his friends, they are sarcastic and cynical and so passionate and loving and they are not FAKE to him even at his own funeral.
I love how they stay true to Izzie's character, she admitted in Season 2 ( i believe it was during the "It's End of the World...As We know it" episodes where she admitted that she laughed at funerals to avoid the sadness.
I can see how this scene seems disrespectful, but it's just so much more than a regular TV funeral. Of course they don't think it's funny that he died. It's impossible to describe why this scene is so beautiful and sad and yet funny at the same time, and that is exactly why Grey's Anatomy is the best show ever. I cried at the beginning but ended up laughing for several minutes.
I love this scene! Their genuinely laughing, but at the end their faces, its like their in denial- like they just don't want to accept what happened. Awesome Grey's Anatomy.
lol @ 1:53 when they start laughing @that chick it sounds so evil... nd i almost wet myself when alex shouted "O'MALLEY GOT HIT BY A BUS" nd they just laughed...
That's how some people deal with their grief. :] It doesn't mean their happy (certainly not at George's death), but it isn't surprising and it doesn't make them arses.
I love how you know all 5 of them are best friends, even if they dont act like it alot in the episodes, you know they were, which is why I love it so much, Alex, George, Meredith, Izzie and Cristina, they were there for eachother <3 <3 <3
Its just amazing that when the scene starts you feel so sad and then it breaks and your laughing your head off, but then it stops and you feel sad again. Brilliant writing and fantastic acting all round!
I will always miss George and to this day i still dont believe that he is actually dead cos they had no real conformation other than callie seeing his birth mark! :l
i love how they see the red head and starts bursting out laughing all over again :)
nawww, this is such a sad scene but I think this is the perfect greys funeral exactly like keppingmysecrets said, you wouldve expected izzie to laugh and it really did show their connection.
@katusstachelspitze Algunas personas, cuando tienen perdidas muy grandes o experiencias muy fuertes, simplemente no pueden llorar y ocurren estos ataques de risa. Lo cual no significa que no sientan dolor, sino por todo lo contrario.
I remember, Izzie mantioned in the first season that she's always laughing at funerals. There are a lot of 'coming back thing' in this show, for ex. Izzie's dress in the begining of s3 and Christina's dress at the end and so on. It's nice I think..
At first I hated it when they laughed, but then I'm glad it was written this way. You can see how close they all are. They're all grown up. As Izzie said, meridieth got married on a post-it, she and alex got married for real, izzie has cancer and george was hit by a bus. It's crazy how things work out, how life works out and thats why they're laughing. It makes so much sense now. I love their laugh.
Them laughing at Georges funeral didn't "ruin the moment."
If you want to see people crying and grieving in a normal way, this isn't your show. If your a true fan you probably already expected Izzie to laugh because she laughs at the wrong time she can't help it. Like how she laughed when a bomb could have possibly killed everyone in season 2...
@Franzuaa90 Have you seen season two? In season two Izzie explained that she used to laugh at the funerals. All them love George, sometimes, you cry when you are upset or even worried.
@Franzuaa90 it's an hysterical laugh. It's part of their grieving,it like they wanted to replace the sorrow they felt,a feeling they don't like, with another emotion. Of course it's not intentional,it's a psychological reaction .
@FuckingExams oh, i think i know what you mean. when i see the Meredith realize 007 is George; I start to chuckle, but the laughter is probably so that I don't emit some other emotion.
Grey's Anatomy really isn't the same without George. And now that Izzie's left aswell, it's heartbreaking and empty to watch the show when they're gone. :'(
this laugh was so needed during this episode i was in tears and then randomly this laughter.....we needed a break from the grief lol...lmao at 1:53 lol
I: i'm so sorry. M: your laughing? A: she's laughing!
i: george, george is dead, he's dead. the priest is doing classic rock lyrics, and that girl that read head, she is crying her heart out with his mother, and she never even met him, it's just,
C: you are far more twisted than i ever realised
I: You got married on a post it! M: i got married on a post it, i did! C: you guys just got married for real? I: and i got cancer, what?! A: O'malley got hit by a bus! (read head girl walks by)
im really sad that George died..... but if i were to be buried.... i wouldnt want everyone to emotional..... (i mean not like izzy when denny died) george had life he was a good surgeon..... his mission was fulfilled.... and it was his time.....
alex is so good to izzie... I mean it has to be hard for him to see izzie so upset over george. He still is right there by her side. What a great man!
I love this show. I love how the characters are so quirky and different, but this just wasn't a scene I thought needed one of those Grey's Anatomy crazy moments.
She's laughing????????? For God's sake!!!!!! Hes best friend died, she's at his bloody funeral and she bursts out laughing.... Yeah, that's normal.
I expected a more tragic reaction to George's death. After all he was the cutest guy and the best friend you could possibly find. I'm disappointed. Only Callie reacted as I expected.
I get where you're coming from, I do, but Izzie said herself in season 2 during the whole bomb thing with Meredith that she laughs at stressful situations such as funerals - something about not being able to cope with the sorrow or something, so I get that.
I myself have a really disburbed way of breaking out into giggles when it's really inapropriate.
So my weird rambly point is, that all people mourn differently.
Yeah, but then they all laugh! And I didn't know about what Izzie has said, I haven't seen all episodes. I only started watching the show for George, so I can't say I like it as a show. Now that he's dead I won't watch it anymore.
In my opinion he deserved a better, more emotional goodbye...
I think (this might sound insanely stupid) that they sort of have to laugh or else they'll all break apart He was such a big part of their lives and I myself still feel the show is missing something and that they shouldn't have made his death so final - why couldn't he be missing in Irak or something and then show up later? But alas, that didn't happen.
As for the emotional goodbye, I think it's how you see it. I think it was very emotional, but too mixed up with Izzie's "death"... I loved the episode though. And I really think you should keep watching, maybe there's another character to love? anyway thanks for debating;)
The season 5 finale was indeed extremely emotional, especially when Meredith found out that the patient was George. Perhaps this is why I thought it would be more tragic... As for your previous comment, I agree that they should have "put" him in Iraq or sth, and not kill him. Thanks for the discussion, too.
Thought this scene was so funny. I like that it was the original interns. Minus George of course. But shows how close they have all become & how much they care for each other.
It's kind of a twisted scene...but I wasn't really surprised when she started laughing. Cuz I remember that episode in season 2 when she told Alex that she laughs at funerals.:P:)
This was so true and real. When my auntie died this is exactly what we did. Sometimes you're just to shocked to cry. Sometimes you laugh. Sometimes it's all you can do.

alex is so good to izzie... I mean it has to be hard for him to see izzie so upset over george. He still is right there by her side. What a great man!

I love this show. I love how the characters are so quirky and different, but this just wasn't a scene I thought needed one of those Grey's Anatomy crazy moments.

love the sound of merediths laugh
janjanjannn 2 years ago 2
Oh, honestly.

So my weird rambly point is, that all people mourn differently.
maipigenDK 2 years ago
Yeah, but then they all laugh! And I didn't know about what Izzie has said, I haven't seen all episodes. I only started watching the show for George, so I can't say I like it as a show. Now that he's dead I won't watch it anymore.
In my opinion he deserved a better, more emotional goodbye...
api4815 2 years ago
I think (this might sound insanely stupid) that they sort of have to laugh or else they'll all break apart He was such a big part of their lives and I myself still feel the show is missing something and that they shouldn't have made his death so final - why couldn't he be missing in Irak or something and then show up later? But alas, that didn't happen.
maipigenDK 2 years ago 2
agree with you!! but I had also liked a emotional funeral
greyslover4ever 2 years ago
As for the emotional goodbye, I think it's how you see it. I think it was very emotional, but too mixed up with Izzie's "death"... I loved the episode though. And I really think you should keep watching, maybe there's another character to love? anyway thanks for debating;)
maipigenDK 2 years ago
The season 5 finale was indeed extremely emotional, especially when Meredith found out that the patient was George. Perhaps this is why I thought it would be more tragic... As for your previous comment, I agree that they should have "put" him in Iraq or sth, and not kill him. Thanks for the discussion, too.
api4815 2 years ago
I soooo, agree, that he should've had more emotional funeral... But I just couldn't help cracking up at this scene X)

Thought this scene was so funny. I like that it was the original interns. Minus George of course. But shows how close they have all become & how much they care for each other.

Classic Grey's..

...And correct me if I'm wrong...but if George died, and you're an organ donor...shouldn't he be cremated?:P

It's kind of a twisted scene...but I wasn't really surprised when she started laughing. Cuz I remember that episode in season 2 when she told Alex that she laughs at funerals.:P:)
