  • theirs is my favourite version of Beethoven violin sonatas. By largely eschewing vibrato and playing at the extreme of the p spectrum Faust achieves uniquely transparent colouring quite in the spirit of what Gould called 'quiet resignation'. The balance between the violin and the piano's dynamics and timbre is spectacular.
