And that's exactly what drew me to this series! I mean I like magic, sorcery, swords, and all that but in EarthBound you're playing as kids with psychic powers (instead of magic), armed with baseball bats, frying pans, and high-tech weaponry (that the kid invented mind you) fighting aliens and possessed people, animals, and objects instead of mythical beasts. It was like a slice of life but at the same time very surreal which makes it (imo) the best and unique rpg series EVER!

I think the American market wasn't ready for a game like this. I think if it was released today, it would fare a lot better. RPG's are mainstream now.
@Supercharge87 There were other factors like the fact RPGs weren't as popular in America at the time. Also, no one would want to spend over $100 on a game even if it came with a strategy guide and other marketing material. Plus the box was so big it would have been hard to find a good way to display it compared to other games. The marketing did suck, and in the US it was more directed at young boys than the whole family. The marketing in Japan was for the whole family, so it was more successful.
@Supercharge87 Earthbound came out in the mid-90s, where Ren & Stimpy was one of the most popular shows around. That show was rather disgusting, and apparently, disgusting things appealed to kids. I don't knock the ad campaign at all.

The only problem I see with that would be truly dedicated EB fans griping and moaning about how different the remake would be compared to the original, but honestly anyone and everyone who cares about this game should be thankful for getting anything IF there ever is a remake in a non-copyrighted way.
@GameRaterAlpha There will always be fans like that in any fandom. I say hand it off to Retro Studios. They've done a pretty good job re-imagining classic games.

Plus the box was so big it would have been hard to find a good way to display it compared to other games. The marketing did suck, and in the US it was more directed at young boys than the whole family. The marketing in Japan was for the whole family, so it was more successful.

@Supercharge87 Earthbound came out in the mid-90s, where Ren & Stimpy was one of the most popular shows around. That show was rather disgusting, and apparently, disgusting things appealed to kids. I don't knock the ad campaign at all.

@squirtlebubblebeam2 Yeah, I'm aware of those. Besides, a remake would allow them to re-imagine everything in a non-copyright way. My reasoning for what I said was that if Nintendo CAN release this game, and they just WON'T because of poor sales back in a year where RPGs weren't the game of choice...then that's just messed up. I agree with you completely on some kind of remake.

The only problem I see with that would be truly dedicated EB fans griping and moaning about how different the remake would be compared to the original, but honestly anyone and everyone who cares about this game should be thankful for getting anything IF there ever is a remake in a non-copyrighted way.

i mean honestly, video games are supposed to real, in a sense, and the gamer being able to connect with it in some way, when a game does that for me im pleased. i see the problem with all the copyright problems but really, i think everyone loves each reference, it adds to the appeal. either find a way around it or just redo the script, still keeping the game's status. pas peter griffon once put it in front of congress: "come on..........!!!!!!!!!!"

This was probably removed because it's considered as Paula's theme along with her prison theme. I think in the next game there should be the "Paula Melody" featuring Boy Meets Girl and Paula's prison. There should be a melody for all characters from mother in that case.

This is why EB isnt on the Virtual COnsole, and Mother 3 will never come to america

It has a certain nostalgic, funny, interesting, and addicting personality that makes mother what it is. R.I.P. earthbound! Nintendo of America! why? EB fans cannot regard our want to have it in memory. EB FTW! better than all rpgs i have played! thanks Itoi, for showing us the wonders of earthbound! Even though it is gone, the essence will be there forever.

@owenmcgarel theres more going on then the money, the fan base has grown exponentially, if they released any one of the mother series with a little extra publicity (not nearly the earthbound campaign) it would sell fantastically. I think it's a legal issue, or Itoi not going for the necisary changes.

@owenmcgarel no, I played through the game and I didn't see anything that would get them in trouble, even blatantly talking about the beatles, i mean how many moveis/tv shows have mentioned an IRL band/tv show/movie. I heard the term yo-yo is copyrighted, they had to take it out of star tropics, but I can't imagine that's the only factor.

@shemhead well i think that noa wants all three games be released in a close range of time or something like that and they have to clear ALL that stuff up. yes they are probably making longer because of the trouble that they had with earthbound in the past but there is a rumour of the games becoming released on the 3ds so i hope that this very LONG waiting is worth it!
