I noticed you mentioned about harvesting seeds from hybrids and continue doing that and they eventually become a type of heirloom. However, I have read and have been told that harvesting those seeds and then growing them will give you a blander tomato or whatever you are growing. They will not be true to your plant that your originally grew. If this is true, how do you make yours into an heirloom type and still have them turn out right?
Some hybrid seeds will produce inferior offspring but many won't. The way I save seeds from hybrids is to select the best tomatoes from the best plants. I continue this through the generations. This is how my cherry tomatoes ended up strong, sturdy, productive and flavorful. This and some luck of course. :)
@Praxxus55712 That is cool to know! I am so glad! I have some sugar snaps that are hybrid and was told I couldn't harvest the seeds from them. But now I know there is a possibility . Yay! I really appreciate your help! Have a great weekend!
@Praxxus55712 Thanks for the info! I wonder if I can do that the same thing with sugar snaps. I have hybrid sugar snaps my daughter is going to try growing indoors. We will see what happens. =) Thanks, Ray!
hi ray... i got organic "sweetie cherry tomato" seeds from aimers organics... neither the website or seed package says whether the plants are determinate or indeterminate... are you familiar with this plant?? or if anyone else knows...please lemme know.. they are about to sprout anytime
@Praxxus55712 thanks man... im growing them in my window...im gonna grow one in organic soil mix and im gonna feed it Kelp man nutrients.... and one is gonna grow in a homemade (by me thank you lol) mini-bubbleponics system made from a folders coffee container lol.. im gonna feed that 1 some stuff by Fox Farm... im in a small appartment... can i move in with you? lol kidding...thanks again ray ur so cool
what is ideally good temperature to grow indoor? im living in an apartment in Perth, Australia and we r experiencing winter frm june till end of august. temperature wise is arnd 2 degrees to a max of 12degree. i have a cherry tomato plant that is not doing well, though it have already fruited for me. n i foolishly germinate another 2 normal tomato plant, placing them everyday near the window to get the sun rays without the cold wind blowing. they r doing fine for now
@HANAFI1981 Whatever temps are comfortable for you indoors are fine for your tomato plant. Putting it in a sunny window in the winter is perfect. Just make sure to remove it from the window at night. The etmperatures by your window can get really cold during the night.
@qaz7107 It's good to have drainage holes in a container so if you overwater it, it can drain out the excess water. But, I've grown plants in containers with no drainage holes with no problems. I just had to make certain I didn't give it too much water.
oh okay. ill probably just plant heirlooms as soon as i get them then.(and save the seeds from those instead and just leave the hybrids out completely except for eating)
ooh! what about green beans ,strawberries, and corn? i planted some hybrids because i ran really short on heirlooms from last season and so i had to plant hybrids a bit.
@theamazingplant2 corn is a bit tricky. Beans and strawberries are easy. Heck, strawberries put out runners, which can be rooted in a small pot and grown indoors all winter........at least that's what I plan on doing. :)
@Praxxus55712 okay! awesome. what about corn makes it trickier ( if you just have to grow a few generations of seed) ill probably use the runners this year too. maybe if i keep them all winter long un dormant they will be ready to fruit by spring!!!!
@theamazingplant2 The thing about corn is, if left to grow wild, it'll revert eventually back to a wild grass with mini cobs or none. Corn has to be continually grown for size of ears in order to maintain the size, whereas tomatoes pretty much put out the same size more readily even if grown for taste. I'm taking runners from my strawberries so I won't have to start new ones if my house sells this summer.
so if i plant the hybrid seeds and keep ontrying until i get things that are PLANTS (lol one time i planted a hybrid seed and i dont know WHAT i got!) until they turn into normal plants? ( heirlooms)
@theamazingplant2 It takes some time but yep that's what I did with a cherry tomato. It's a few generations old and it grows the same exact thing. Some varieties might take longer but that's how you can get some pretty cool plants. Even carrots. :)
Thanks for the vid....always enjoy your gardening tips. I have been growing inside as well and will definitely try this one on my current tomato seedlings. :)
my tomato's are now finally starting to smell like tomato's! i'm wondering if i could plant my tiny tim together. they are so tiny anyway. i didn't know you could plant the cherry varieties so close together.
niffer, I'm going to be pruning and forcing lateral growth on the potted cherry tomatoes. It'll have short stocky thick stems and the plan is for it to be solid as a rock. I won't let it get too crowded though. It's going to be interesting to see how this indoor plant progresses. It's a first for me to grow them so close and just indoors. :)
ps: Tiny Tims are the cutest plants!! You can grow multiple ones in a pot easily. Let me know how they taste, ok?
I've really been enjoying all your gardening and cooking videos. Lots of great tips and info. The fact that your always so happy and full of energy doesn't hurt either. Always leave your vids w/ a smile on my face and a warm fuzzy feeling =)
That note you made about rotting veg not good for plants...I always wondered why I couldn't forego the compost process and just toss the scraps onto the garden. Never heard it addressed and I TRUST YOU COMPLETELY! So no more of that. I told my Husband I met a man on Youtube but he's in Minnesota so no worries. I'm allergic to snow! <--Florida/Arizona girl!
Hi Ray. This is good stuff and worked for me last year. This year I'm doing a double trial, prune/don't prune and feed/don't feed because the people I gave tomato plants to last year mostly neglected them and got better tomatoes than me and my devoted (obsessive?) routine in the greenhouse.
I'm glad you are showing us this cause I really suck at growing tomatoes ( they HATE me) and I would love to try growing them indoors. You can do this with pepper plants too?? Thanks for posting these videos they really, really help :-)
I enjoyed the video Ray! I wish I had tomato plants that size right now, I am envious. I did start some broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower seedlings. I am definitely ready for the growing season!
Have been watching your videos for a while now. im 17 and have been gardening for a long time. i have a huge garden in my back yard and thinking about making videos like what you do. keep the videos coming! Tyler From S.Jersey
It works with any plant that can root from a cutting. It works with pepper plants too! Experts say not to bury pepper plants lower than you get them from the greenhouse. My next vid (I'm editing it as we speak) will prove that this is false. I'll show the roots growing off a buried stem. I'll also show how to cut back pepper plants for bushier and sturdier growth. :)
