:D Nice lineup of aircraft waiting to takeoff from JFK's 4L! We have some A320's, a 767-200, a little Cessna Citation, another A320, followed by a 767-400, and finally an ERJ-175... and then another A320, ERJ-175, CRJ-700, DC-9-50, and 757-200. It puzzles me that your aircraft was cleared for takeoff while that UA 747 was taxiing on RWY 13R.

I hate how everyone is making a big deal about this guy using his phone on the plane... Cry me a river. Do you expect iPhone users to not use the iPod function of their phones while on a plane? No. You expect them to put it in Airplane Mode and use it normally. Thats just what this guy did. Even if he didnt, using a cell phone on a plane doesnt cause any damage. Do you really believe that EVERYONE on a flight turns of their phones? Of course not. I know I forgot to when I went to hawaii....LOL

@DrDownBrowns Cell phones interfere with the avionics (read as: autopilot, flight control systems) of the aircraft. Sometimes, random frequencies interfere with the pilot's headsets, used to communicate the ground and fellow aviators. They can also cause autopilot disconnections, loss of landing vectors, and potentially cause fatal-failures. Of course, these are rare. 10 phones on won't cause disasters, 200 might.

I picked up the Droid on friday. So far, I love this thing. The video seems much better than the photo mode so far. But both are pretty nice. Can't wait for more app support on this thing.. its the balls!

It isn't for me to back up the rule the airline has made and/or is enforcing. The fact that the airlines have this rule and you are seemingly unaware of it is the issue. Given that just TODAY I flew and the standard announcement that all PEDs including cell phones needed to be off, I have zero hesitation in once again letting you know that you are wrong. Unlike clueless you, I do understand how airplane mode is an acceptable mode to use the cell phone after takeoff/landing. If you would take the 2 minutes to search airline websites, you would see how wrong you are. Two things are infinite, the universe and stupidity and I'm not sure about the universe.

Someone has an IQ deficiency...too bad there isn't a pill you can take for that. Try to follow along...portable electronic device (PED)...try to make the connection...cell phones are (1) portable, (2) electronic and (3) a device. Still with me? Good. Now for the hard part...airplane mode on your phone DOES NOT mean it can be on while taking off and landing, just like PCs, DVD players, iPods...all PEDs, all off. AFTER takeoff/landing you can use your PED in airplane mode...moron!
