  • song is actually drifting

  • Nice looking. THX =)

  • This is not a matte painting its a photograph of a landscape with some added effects and a poor tutorial.

  • @dothisdothat321 correct, matte painting infers that there was painting involved this was 3d rendering and photo manipulation at best.

  • if this is a 2d scene why did you use fusion? wouldnt photoshop have been better?

  • wow lot of softwares there...good work...thanks for the tutorial...

  • Nice tutorial, laid out with well paced examples of the progression, and even a bit of 'freakin' humor thrown in. I give this 2 regular and one green screen thumbs up!

  • I feel like a total idiot for not knowing this, but what is a matte painting??

  • @Newbie19901996 a painting of matt

  • boooo! cheater!

  • it was a pleasure watching your video. nice music too. oh before i forget the end result was amazing. keep it up. :)

  • The thing is... YOU DIDNT DO ANYTHING AT ALL!!! BY YOUR DESCRIPTIONS EVERYTHING WAS SET FOR YOU!

  • Legit

  • Looks great man. And I love the Andy Mckee song you threw in. I'm looking to get into Mattepainting. Not sure where to start really. I've been doing 3d models on and off for a while and want to try something new.

  • dreamscape ;)

  • I am very impressed...you certainly do understand lighting and values to make it all come together. I need that education for my paintings...lol.

  • holy crap... is it that easy?

  • not really...

  • 2nd one is Andy Mckee - Heather's Song

  • Not exactly matte painting, rather just comping since none of the elements were painted in. OK job, but the lighting on the range doesn't really match that of the background, with sun obscured by the mountains they would be in the shadow, lit only by the scattered light in the atmosphere.

  • Yeahh is Andy Mckee - Driftin

Awesome song, now I'll watch the video haha

  • @nkr10 thankyou. great song :-)

  • @crunk001

    ; )

for sure it is, isn't it??

    Merry past Christmas haha

  • Matte painting is a process of composing photos with painted/rendered elements to create an image that will be used in film as a background. It's not fine art, it's an image done for a purpose.

  • The previous post was addressed to sartanko, sorry, comment system here never nests them for me for some reason.

  • Then my mistake and i apologise.

  • Matte painting is painting a picture from scratch with paints and a brush. If you have the talent that is........

  • eddiefuzz:

Actually with pastels on glass plates, not paints and brushes. And no, they don't have to or need to be painted from scratch. Matte painter is not trying to prove a point or show off, his job is to create a background for a film production in an expedient manner, how he does it is up to him.

  • I'm not saying that pastels are never used, but where did you get the idea that paints and brushes are not used? Albert Whitlock used oils for films such as Earthquake, and Harrison Ellenshaw used acyrilics for the first Star Wars film.

  • Hi niskytank.

If you search Albert Whitlock, you can see a YouTube video of him actually painting with paints and a brush.

  • I was referring to the olden days of Matte painting, these days it's actually primarily digital, and a composite of 2D and 3D, you'd be hard-pressed to find a film that used a traditionally painted Matte in the last decade (in US anyway). You are correct though, acrylics were also used a lot before mid-nineties when the shift to digital started to happen.

  • You know Andy McKee? That's great! ;-)

  • the song.. Andy Mckee?

    nice vid btw :P

  • thanks Istran...

    paraM.

  • excellent presentation.. i hav nothing to do with matte bt i hav read abt it before 2 years.. i understand today..

  • How long time does it take to render that last shot? Camera moving from left to right, with all the light and particle effects etc. I was thinking of starting to use Matte Painting a bit more in my vids, but I'm not sure about the render times. Especially 3D mattepainting. After effects works great for 2d matte painting..

  • Such Great State-Of-The-Art work!

    10/5

  • Whats the name of the last song ?

  • The song playing at the end is "Fantasy" by James Newton Howard, taken from "The Lookout" official soundtrack. Hope this helps.

  • Congratulations! You make like it seems so simple..but in deed..haha..Its very complicated...

  • Yeah... great tutorial Istran Dulos, that really helps me! that was very instructive. thank you!

  • Good tutorial Istran, its is good for begginers to know steps involved...Anyway it would be better with 3D Compositing of this matte painting because the background should not move like that..When you place all your layers in Fusion 3d space, then you can animate virtual 3d camera instead of transform like you did here, and get very realistic effect where you will achieve a motion parralax, an perspective illusion where distant object seem to move a little while foreground is moving faster.

  • Thank you very much for the video. The books I have read on this use the same techniques as you but they dont show the steps in the detail that you have.

Ps: rum and coke help with allot of things

  • What is the name of the last song? If it's by James Newton Howard, then what is the title?

    Please,I neeeeeed to know.

  • This isn't a matte painting. It's a render painting. There's a difference between the two.

    Good start, though.

  • i love this song, this guy is so innovative in his music...look up drifting on youtube....and click on the bald dude....hes soooo amazing....

this painter is real good as well.... no BOB ROSS though

  • bob ross? its Don ross and secondly his name is andy mckee....why do people talk about things they dont know about just to sound more intelligent....you know the only outcome is the opposite.

    peace

    brian

  • Thanks for taking the time to do the video.

    :D

  • mountain and sky doesn't match, you should had pick a lighter sky maybe that would had work better with less sun light.

  • ya looks gud, except for the camera movement! the Sky isn't convincing!

  • @azibaa yeah it would be awesome if you couldve added rays of lights peaking throu the mountains as see them in 3d as the camera moves but it probably would've taken you years to render that out though. good explanation of the whole process though really helpful to me thank you

  • I was under the impression that matte paintings combine renders or stock photos with actual painting or digital painting, not just purely rendered stuff put together.. Not bad though.

  • he uses digital fusion, is it cheap, what other programs are good, and relatively cheap??

  • you got to be joking...eyeon fusion costs 5500 $...not cheap?

  • then I wont get it lol.

  • and remember illegal downloading is bad.

  • If you have a mac Apple Shake is a good program

  • Probably this work will impress the people not familiar with post production, but the composer with similar work you will not surprise. Anything especial

  • Nice, cosy, vid. awesome!

  • Jesus, you're good. Does one have to be a freaking genius to know/remember how to do all these things?! Man, I am impressed.

  • This would not actually be considered a matte piece. However you do beautiful work. 5/5

  • nice tutorial... until now i never even knew that there was an automatic color correction node in fusion and always have trouble creating good looking fog - will try your method the next time. :)

  • not a matte painting

  • Can't anyone paint anymore?

  • well done.i am doing video editing using after fx which is realy neat. but i wana learn more about 3d stuff like 3ds max. is that programme free?

    good job on that

  • no, 3ds max is not freeware :), there's a free 30-day trial though at autodesk[dot]com

or check blender[dot]org for a free alternative

  • Maya is better!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Personally, I prefer Cinema 4D and Vue 6....

  • hell yeah!

  • Aaaaahhhh I DOnt Get It What Is Matte Painting and how too use it and which program?

  • Don't worry this isn't matte painting, this is just a 3D composit. Search else where on youtube and google: "Dylan Cole"- look at his site.

  • this is so cheap

  • this is more a comp than a matte painting but great job A+

  • "HI MOM" lol

  • erm....

  • I dig the Andy Mckee

  • Im curious. Why digital fusion over photoshop?

I noticed you used 3ds max to get that soft light effect over the mountains. You can get that same effect with a light yellow radial gradient, just make the beginning and end of the gradient the same color and make one end transparent. Or if you want to make it look more organic, you can use a really big, soft brush and embellish it on your own. Just some tips to save you time next time so you dont have to wait forever for a render. great work man!

  • That's pretty sweet! I like the music too..is that you playing? You've nearly got it down..nice job! (Took me a week of constant practice to learn Drifting but I never did any tapping before so it was tricky enough!) Andy McKee rocks! Same goes for your matte.

    Nice one mate.

(What's the name of the second tune btw? I gotsta learn me that!!)

  • very well done , ive never done a matte painting but am sure i will try it it looks like fun

  • shut up if you cannot appreciate digital art.

  • Um, half the movies you watch (if not all) use this type of art to push their scenes. When you need a blown out city background, you turn to a matte artist who can add all those details and effects over the background you desire for the shot.

A good example of this is found in I Am Legend. That movie is 90% matte painting. Asshole.

  • @modtracks Uhm, who are you talking to? Lmao.

  • very well done, well presented and great music thanks

  • lot of writing and darking!!!!!

  • Who is the guitar and the song! :) 5 stars.

    ~NewTheatron:)

  • It's Andy McKee. The song is called "Drifting".

  • great great tutorial!

    thanks a lot
