Nice tutorial, laid out with well paced examples of the progression, and even a bit of 'freakin' humor thrown in. I give this 2 regular and one green screen thumbs up!
Looks great man. And I love the Andy Mckee song you threw in. I'm looking to get into Mattepainting. Not sure where to start really. I've been doing 3d models on and off for a while and want to try something new.
Not exactly matte painting, rather just comping since none of the elements were painted in. OK job, but the lighting on the range doesn't really match that of the background, with sun obscured by the mountains they would be in the shadow, lit only by the scattered light in the atmosphere.
Matte painting is a process of composing photos with painted/rendered elements to create an image that will be used in film as a background. It's not fine art, it's an image done for a purpose.
Actually with pastels on glass plates, not paints and brushes. And no, they don't have to or need to be painted from scratch. Matte painter is not trying to prove a point or show off, his job is to create a background for a film production in an expedient manner, how he does it is up to him.
I'm not saying that pastels are never used, but where did you get the idea that paints and brushes are not used? Albert Whitlock used oils for films such as Earthquake, and Harrison Ellenshaw used acyrilics for the first Star Wars film.
I was referring to the olden days of Matte painting, these days it's actually primarily digital, and a composite of 2D and 3D, you'd be hard-pressed to find a film that used a traditionally painted Matte in the last decade (in US anyway). You are correct though, acrylics were also used a lot before mid-nineties when the shift to digital started to happen.
How long time does it take to render that last shot? Camera moving from left to right, with all the light and particle effects etc. I was thinking of starting to use Matte Painting a bit more in my vids, but I'm not sure about the render times. Especially 3D mattepainting. After effects works great for 2d matte painting..
Good tutorial Istran, its is good for begginers to know steps involved...Anyway it would be better with 3D Compositing of this matte painting because the background should not move like that..When you place all your layers in Fusion 3d space, then you can animate virtual 3d camera instead of transform like you did here, and get very realistic effect where you will achieve a motion parralax, an perspective illusion where distant object seem to move a little while foreground is moving faster.
Thank you very much for the video. The books I have read on this use the same techniques as you but they dont show the steps in the detail that you have.
bob ross? its Don ross and secondly his name is andy mckee....why do people talk about things they dont know about just to sound more intelligent....you know the only outcome is the opposite.
@azibaa yeah it would be awesome if you couldve added rays of lights peaking throu the mountains as see them in 3d as the camera moves but it probably would've taken you years to render that out though. good explanation of the whole process though really helpful to me thank you
I was under the impression that matte paintings combine renders or stock photos with actual painting or digital painting, not just purely rendered stuff put together.. Not bad though.
Probably this work will impress the people not familiar with post production, but the composer with similar work you will not surprise. Anything especial
nice tutorial... until now i never even knew that there was an automatic color correction node in fusion and always have trouble creating good looking fog - will try your method the next time. :)
I noticed you used 3ds max to get that soft light effect over the mountains. You can get that same effect with a light yellow radial gradient, just make the beginning and end of the gradient the same color and make one end transparent. Or if you want to make it look more organic, you can use a really big, soft brush and embellish it on your own. Just some tips to save you time next time so you dont have to wait forever for a render. great work man!
That's pretty sweet! I like the music too..is that you playing? You've nearly got it down..nice job! (Took me a week of constant practice to learn Drifting but I never did any tapping before so it was tricky enough!) Andy McKee rocks! Same goes for your matte.
Nice one mate.
(What's the name of the second tune btw? I gotsta learn me that!!)
Um, half the movies you watch (if not all) use this type of art to push their scenes. When you need a blown out city background, you turn to a matte artist who can add all those details and effects over the background you desire for the shot.
A good example of this is found in I Am Legend. That movie is 90% matte painting. Asshole.

This is not a matte painting its a photograph of a landscape with some added effects and a poor tutorial.
dothisdothat321 6 months ago
@dothisdothat321 correct, matte painting infers that there was painting involved this was 3d rendering and photo manipulation at best.

Take two digital images and matte them together? What's the big deal? We used to do better with paper and scissors back in junior school.
