This is tough to find on CD. The only Fischer performance I can find has Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau as the baritone who sings like he is out of breath at the end of each phrase.
First time I heard this: Ok, this old music we don't need this today! 2. One more time I didn't catch it all 3. Ok i give you back your Jesus don't touch me (he looks dangerous) 4. Wow this Violin solo, i like to play it. 5. Interesting music 6. beautiful music 7. magnificent music 8. "Berry, now give me back my Jesus, i need him!" 9... What a music! The replay button is worn out by me!
What an incredible thing to witness is this song. For any culture, any religion, to me, it signifies the cry for a returning to the peace every religious movement intended from the beginning.

I can't...dislike it. But I much prefer it quicker, smaller,...authentic-er. I just have to conclude, I suppose, that Huge Romantic Bach and Authentic Baroque Bach are two completely different things, each with its own unique merits.

Speeds are always subjective, but this sounds a bit plodding. The vocalist is actually not as jarring as I'd expect. He doesn't use excessive vibrato, but still, something a bit more dance-like requires both tempos and singers that don't remind one of elephants doing allemandes.
This is magnificent, the best version I have heard. Walter Berry has a very booming voice and is the definitive voice I hear in my head when I think of this song.
the Violinist whens he play as solo my god that genius soloist of Bach style and Bach he's the only one who such create kind of this move in he's work
Does anyone know where I can find the sheet of the violin part? It's so great

Does anyone know if there are any Richter/Berry performances of Passion / St. Matthew on CD? I can only find one or the other, but not both :(

These people mean serious business, there is no fooling around in this version. Quite compelling.

Splendid! So much passion in the orchestra, violinist and the performance of Walter Berry!

Very good voice, not one of those small bach-voices, I prefer that sound much over the tiny ones.

What fantastic resonance he is able to produce. WOW!

There is a registration with Richter and (the young) Matti Salminen with his very dark voice - for me much more impressive.

Plodding, Elephants....
Sieht das Geld dem Moerderlohn....
Look at the money, a killers-wage !!!
Gebt mir meine Jesum wieder...
Give me my Jesus back !!!
It should be sung 'hammering" and a bit "Agressive" like in this clip.

42. Arie (Baß)
Gebt mir meinen Jesum wieder !
Seht, das Geld, den Mörderlohn,
Wirft euch der verlorne Sohn
Zu den Füßen nieder !
Quon me rende mon Jésus !
Voyez, largent, le prix du sang,
Le fils prodigue le jette
À vos pieds !
