Like most anime they had a first season limit of 26 episodes

So they had to make the decision to shorten the first arc for

a) To give more episodes on latter more important arcs

b) Introduce the themes of the show at a reasonable pace to new viewers (they couldnt spend two episodes on Geogre and Shannons relationship, then throw in witches, rituals and time resetting at the 10 episode mark

Try hongfire they got a bunch of stuff :) if you dont understand japanese(like it do <.< just some words) you'll need the patch. Try witchhunt for the patch(google umineko witch hunt).

The old links on hongfire propably dont work anymore but I remember that they reuploaded it. But I guess I'm gonna buy it anyway just to have it in my collection :)

They have announced that it's going to be translated. Higurashi's visual novels were translated and released in English earlier in October.

Higurashi was supposed to be released in October but they got delayed to at least December 15, as for Umineko, the Witch Hunt patch is fully supported by 07th Expansion and they already have Ep 1-4 100% done and Ep 5 is 75% done

I prefer the anime designs for not looking chubby (they seem a bit more natural) and the plot is there...but I'd like to see you try to cram a complex murder mystery game into 5 episodes of anime. If they didn't work like this, each of the 07th Expansion games would be their own 12 episode series.

Brotip / Spoiler for all of the "connected or not?" guys: Lady Frederika Bernkastel and Lady Lambdadelta are majorly hinted to be responsible for the Endless June, and Bernkastel is probably Furude Rika after she caused the miracle that ended the loop.

There's a loose plot connection concerning the Hidden Tea Parties, but it has no bearing on the plot. Knowing Higurashi will give you an "Oh that's what they're talking about" feeling but it's certainly not necessary.

I do suppose the idea that the witch of Bernkastel can be connected to Furude Rika, but that's just an idea. No real proof, unless you quote Rika in Higurashi Rei, where she says something about not being the witch of Bernkastel or something along those lines.
