When clearly the recordings on their first 3 albums were awful for the bass drum.

As always, Lars embarrasses himself with his ridiculous performance. The most overrated drummer ever! He can barely play the drums! I've got all Metallica albums and I'm a drummer. Unfortunately Lars influenced me a lot more than I wished. I could be a better drummer if I have never listened to him.

The best way of seeing how bad Lars is is checking out some good metal drummers. I used to think Lars was good until I dug deeper into metal and started to listen to things which are not shown in the mainstream. I recommend you listen to Death's Symbolic, Individual Thought Patterns and Human to start. Look for "Necrophagist drumming" in Youtube. To see a real solo by a metal drummer look for "Richard Christy Drum Solo From Audiohammer Studios 2004". Just some examples to start.

@lgalicki I listen to a lot of better metal drummers...doesn't mean Lars sucks, those guys are just really amazing...Dave Lombardo, Vinnie Paul, Chris Adler, the dude from Testament...I listen to a lot of metal, I know Lars is nothing spectacular, but he gets by with his mediocre good skills and great musicianship and understanding of song structure

I'm sorry, but you're still not checking the real drummers. They're not in mainstream bands such as Slayer, Pantera or Lamb of God. The drummers you cited are way better than Lars, but far from the best. You should check Gene Hoglan, Richard Christy, Sean Reinert, Dirk Verbeuren, Henry Ranta, Romain Goulon, Brent Smedley, David Husvik, Hannes Grossmann and Morten Sørensen in his last works. I suggest you look for them in Youtube. Thanks for keeping the level of the discussion up!

Indeed some of the drummers I pointed play(ed) in more extreme bands. I really suggest you check out Charred Walls of the Damned. It's got phenomenal drum work with phenomenal melodic vocals by Tim Owens! Guitar and bass is also stunning and the compositions are awesome! It's way more accessible. I assure you it's really worth it!

@lgalicki to be honest, I base a drummers skill by the quality of music he creates rather than his solo abilities which are all stroing points for the guys you mentioned and they arent bad AT ALL when they play songs, but to me, intricate beats and song structure are the most important, which is why I like Lars a lot. Oh... And one last thing. I think my favorite drummer of all time isn't even a metal drummer. I'm talking about Jimmy Chamberlin, from the Smashing Pumpkins and The Chamberlin Complex. Take a look at some of his videos. They'll simply blow your mind! Matt Cameron, who today plays in Pearl Jam and was Soundgarden's drummer is also great! I like Soundgarden a lot more than PJ.
