Neuropathologist Dr. Stephen Nelson who assisted in Terri Schiavos autopsy said that they could not rule out MCS. Terri Schiavos cerebral cortext was severely thinned, however, not completely destroyed. She had been denied rehabilitative therapy for years.
@ds12569 PVS is a progressive condition. As you're in it for a long time you get worse. Kate Adamson was not in a PVS condition for 15 straight years. There is no comparison. Kate was responsive during the withdrawal of the feeding tube (which is considered life support in the state of Florida). Terri wasn't responsive either time they pulled her feeding tube. Terri had multiple doctors over the years diagnose her.
Terri had advanced therapy for over 3 years and was not responsive. She failed multiple swallow tests over the years. She had experimental surgery which also failed. The brain scans showed her cerebral cortex was virtually destroyed and she had neocortical brain death. The only thing that was still going was the brain stem. Her body was falling apart. Again you're trying to link her with people who have not been in similar situations over the amount of time Terri was in it.
She WAS healthy. She was "mentally" disabled, nothing else - there is a HUGE difference. She was not hooked up to any other machine. She was only hooked up to a feeding tube because she could not swallow due to her neurological deficits. Removing a feeding tube is, basically, intentionally withholding food and water from a human being and INTENTIONALLY starving her to death...which is exactly what happened to Terri Schiavo.

Did she before she became unable to tell your Dad her wishes tell him not to put her on a machine. I think that is the difference here. Shiavo said she would never want to live on a machine. This went to court several times and each time the court sided with the husband. My Dad had a DNR and we honored that at the end of his life.

However, to your assertions, Rom Houben was in so-called PVS state much longer than Terri. Terri's body was not falling apart and the ME confirmed it. Once again, the Neuropath. said that the damage to her brain was not inconsistent with PVS but also they could not rule out minimally conscious state (MCS).

Kate was responsive during the withdrawal of the feeding tube (which is considered life support in the state of Florida). Terri wasn't responsive either time they pulled her feeding tube. Terri had multiple doctors over the years diagnose her.

The brain scans showed her cerebral cortex was virtually destroyed and she had neocortical brain death. The only thing that was still going was the brain stem. Her body was falling apart. Again you're trying to link her with people who have not been in similar situations over the amount of time Terri was in it.

She WAS healthy. She was "mentally" disabled, nothing else - there is a HUGE difference. She was not hooked up to any other machine. She was only hooked up to a feeding tube because she could not swallow due to her neurological deficits. Removing a feeding tube is, basically, intentionally withholding food and water from a human being and INTENTIONALLY starving her to death...which is exactly what happened to Terri Schiavo.

"Healthy" is largely a subjective term depending on an individual's circumstances. Sometimes, "healthy" means doing as well or better than expected under the circumstances- ie, chronic illness, disability, et cetera.
Some disabled people live pretty decent lives while on feeding tubes.
