I do have a hint (having engineered a good many years, some awards, honorable mention in Stereophile mag...);

When overdubbing, especially the same type of instrument, for ex; violins or the same singer - try to vary the microphone angles, types of mics, position of the artist in the room, bow, mouthpieces, brands or models of instruments.

Otherwise the overtone series in the timbre of the same instrument over and over builds up to give an obvious and unnatural sound.
