This is a movie that beautifully captures the complexity of the North and South Korea border without going into the political or ideological differences and looking at only the human aspects of it.
first of all, There are 3 North Koreans standing guard, non of which looks right at the border. One guy looks to the north to make sure nobody defects. The other two (closest to the line) look at each other in case one defects to the south. Its the Americans that have a direct look at the border.
It seems everyone misses on major point in this film. The fact that Korea will NEVER unite unless through heavy armed conflict. In the movie itself, constant opinions of North vs South is displayed at a few moments, even when they get together as friends. The point isn't that just political factors and factions can divide and shape one's opinions, but the fact they play a humongous role in for example, whether a north korean can befriend a south korean. It may happen, but look at the ending.
@RunningSwimmingMan in the movie, when they go over the DMZ, the soldiers do in fact face each other between the collective buildings. Yo haven't seen the movie so i can understand why you suddenly jump to conclusions. Also, the movie isn't about presenting a fun exciting realistic story but to send an epiphany of thought over an extremely controversial perception towards an ongoing conflict. It's not for the most realistic story the movie is driving for, but a message.
@RunningSwimmingMan also, the reason why they weren't facing each other in that particular photo, is because some american woman ran straight up to the line to take a picture of the North Korean Guard, which is why the South Korean guard turned around, facng away from the NKG, to get the photographer away. and by the way, you mad bruh?
Well, then you clearly state that... You asian kids, have a hard differentiating between Fantasy and Reality... It's hard to say if you ever truly grow up mentally over the age of 8 years old. You don't don't like my comment, Don't READ IT! Simple enough...

@MrBreakthewalls Both are polite enough but 감사합니다 is considered to be more "formal", so when it's business convention, politicians meeting, public speech and such, 감사합니다 is more used. Of course you can use 고맙습니다 too though.
this movie is so good. Like mmmm makes me proud to be half korean. So now we all must go to the dmz cross over and make friends with the north koreans. And reunify korea.
It's a brilliant final shot . . . except that during the pan, we can see the first guy's belt buckle, but at the end it's covered up by the arm. Oh well.
@89saffuan To visit the DMZ, you can book a tour with the USO - United Services Organization - a non-profit group dedicated to helping US military personnel. You will have to book through their South Korea office.
Alternatively, you can visit from the North Korea, but you will have to book through a Chinese tourist agency in Beijing. This option is a lot more difficult and involves strenous amounts of paperwork. I think certain nationalities are also barred from entering NK.
This movie makes me think about the brotherhood between North and South Korea. The peace that can be countinued by keeping a secret. How sad and epic movie this is. Part of me feels sad because this movie didn't make it threw the American theater
this movie sends a firm messege of that peace can never go undisturded it is a great film and one of the best movies of all time. one of Park Chan Wook' s best works.
i went to to war memorial in seoul, somewhere it says something like the us soldiers came to korea to fight for a country they had never heard of and died for people they never met. you should think about that my friend
While I agree with you on some sense, I also want you to think about the fact that the Korean War is considered a proxy war. So instead of making it sound like South Korea is in debt to America think about that my friend.
um. you're full of shit. you don't know the history of the war. You act as if the US wanted a war with the reds. The South was more hawkish than the north originally, so much so that the US toned down Sungman Rhee. The US barely entered the war in time to prevent complete N Korea victory. Then when they had the capability to destroy china and the north, they said that the original mandate was to push the north out of the south, not conquer the north and the US brokered the cease fire.
the important thing was their will and intetions at that time. in korea 1940's, intelligent people were already divided in two ways, CAPITALISM OR COMMUNISM. guys who believed communism was the only way moved to north and made their own regime under the soviet union's power. it's sad to say but we were not pure vitctim. our politicians or the intelligents were divided already and they followed the US or SU respectivelly. just poor common people remained. they didn;t know what happened.
do you really think NK is free from this split nation's situation? Kim il sung who is father of Kim jung il and Park heon young first sent letter to Starlin. in the letter, they said, if they started a war, they would finish in a soon and finally they would unite whole korean penisular in a communist way.
I completely agree with PCW's ideology within this movie. Korea can never be united because any attempt will be crushed by the U.S and China. We're used as puppets in their twisted game of power and military advantage.
My father told me that a man may only cry only when his mother dies or if his country suffers.
I mourn for my people who can't call each other brother and sister because of a treaty forced upon us. Koreans will forever be stuck in a cold war.
we can't blame only the US or China for that. how about Noth korea?
high ranking officers in Nk are more responsible for this situation. think about it. after both north and south unite in a democratic way, what will happen to them? they should give up all of previlleges. those people benefits the most from this cold war situation. that's why north korea has not adopted open economy policy.
Who forced us to split and created a North and the South? Who supplied the North Korean troops? Who threatened the entire destruction of the Korean peninsula and possibly a third World War?
Russia, China, and the U.S.
Although I give the U.S. more credit for their effort to protect the South (primarily to keep their eyes on Russia and China it was Russia and China who supported the North.
There was a point where the South was advancing but China stopped it fearing that the country would reunite and it would lose the communist friendly country. With a democratic Korea surely it will hold American Troops if a time ever came for War.
High ranking officers initially rose to power under the Stalin regime. Fuck the Russian and Chinese government.
you're so delusional. Both North and South Koreans don't give a shit about what Americans think. LOL. America is kissing South Korean's ass (ex: huge discrepancy in trades where South Koreans have huge surplus) America is in a forever downward spiral and it needs South Korea and Japan to be its allies. I bet you're one of those sheeples that has no clue what's really going on. It's sad.
