I got in country in October, 67. I was with 7th Comm and they sent me up there to a Comm section. Mike 3/9 was the grunt presence. By the time I got there the incoming a day was only 100 to 200 rounds from North Vietnam. We mostly sat in bunkers and watched the craziest humans on earth going out on patrol looking for trouble. Those Mike grunts were absolutely, certifiably insane. By December I was reassigned to what I thought would be safer - 9th Engineers in Phu Bai. Tet was a month away.
