That's Jeff Kafka, a shaper who's been surfing Mav's for a while. So I'm guessing they were fine with it, though I'm sure everyone has their own opinions about it...

Interesting, though I don't yet grasp the appeal of kiting in front of a perfectly fine wave (much more fun to drop in and descend the face I think). I do think I'd get the appeal while being pulled clear by the kite while the surfer behind gets munched by the wave - but than again the possibility of not making it and getting pulled over the falls is for me a large part of the intrigue and motivation.

Yes and all the real surfers and kite surfers sit around yacking on youtube. That is where the pros and experts reside. LOL

If you guys were pros like you say you are you wouldn't have an excuse to be on youtube since you wouldn't be sitting at a computer all day bored!

The best way to conquer the boredom is make personal comments that insult each other on videos depicting things you'll never be able to do. BRILLIANT!

Judging by the comments left here, I see a strong argument supporting the idea that surfers are self absorbed morons, with the exception of all the writers who support the kite surfer. It's about stoke, not what you ride!

LOL...I cant believe the responses Im reading. Anyway, Happy Holidays to all of our watermen and waterwomen and I hope to see you all on the central coast this year. Great video and great job Jeff! Making it out and making back is the complete thrill of riding so far off shore and in such big water. After kiting and living in Alaska and I can wait to get back to the cold Pacific. Take care.

the mavericks are nasty and i wish i could ride them either way with or without a kite.....its all about having fun at the end of day for these guys not about defending surfers over kiteboarders

wow, you guys are idiots if you think this is an insult to kiteboarding. Most people kite on flat water, Jeff just happened to surf. And i dont think its easy to surf those big waves while controlling a kite at the same time. Also, depowering the kite wont make much of a diffrence. I dont understand how you people can get so angry over someone kiting a wave. get a life.

This is my life. I've been living on Maui for two years now trying to market the sport of kiteboarding to surfers. I saw an illustrated nike ad in a surf mag once that depicted a drop in from the riders point of view. Pictured down the line was a kiter with a little pussy cat on his kite. The fact is that surfers think kiting is a sport for old people and pussys who can't surf. This video supports that ideaology and there fore contradicts everything I've tried to do out here.

I dont think eric is being stupid at all... I totally agree.. they are just running in front of the wave, not riding on it. If I were a surfer there I'd be pissed that they're wasting those waves. Be realistic? I think it is realistic to say they're not doing much with those waves other than running in front of them, what's the point in that?

This is an insult to kitesurfing!!! those guys aren't even riding the wave they're running scared in front of it. Where is the bottom turn? the surfers in the vid have way more balls and even dropped in on the kiters cuz they're wasting waves. they need to learn to depower their kite and use the wave next time.
