  • 5 more justin biebers in this world :(

  • Can i get less suck out of the video quality??

  • without Eruption, there wouldn't be rock, metal and all sorts..as you know it today...

    a simple a fact.

he came up with so many new ideas and techniques, without doubt the best guitarist ever, only for that.

  • Just imagine what it must feel like to be a living legend. ...

Like "EddieIsKing2010" said, think of the things that EVH brought into being in the world of rock. It's like inventing the LED after Edison invented the light bulb. First, others invented rock guitar, and then Eddie came along and added HUGE THINGS to the way it is now played! Endless thanks!

  • damn justin bieber fans disliking this fuck!

  • I'd like to think one of those 66,620 viewers was eddie himself.

  • spanish fly is the tops in this clip!

  • what part is "spanish fly"?

  • It starts around 7:13

  • thx

  • @hallgrimur1471

    Mhmm : )

  • Those are palm harmonics lacan75, just youtube them and you can learn them, pretty easy, they just require shitloads of speed

  • 2:25....whata fuck was that ¿pinch harmonics?

  • @lacan75

That is a harmonic trick. You do pull offs on one of the stings and slide the side of your hand down the strings.

  • @piecrust8 got it...thanks a lot..not that hard to do..but pretty cool!!!!!!

  • the first guitar god

  • I love the cigarette on the headstock, a real rocker!

  • LOL - every time I saw them he had that there! They really were Fabulous! They rocked my teen years and the original Van Halen with David Lee Roth was the ONLY Van Halen and don't let anyone tell u otherwise - I saw all 3 versions - Sammy rocked but not like Diamond Dave! I don't even remember the guys name from Extreme but he was nothing like Dave...he was pretty boring actually!

  • lol yeah Dave lee Roth is the shit!

"They rocked my teen years" you're so lucky man... I was born in the wrong era!

  • when i have seen van halen i decided to play guitar...he changed my life !!! the best

  • god amazing!!!!!

  • ... my favorite solo of all time.

  • New Haven, Connecticut

    1986

  • I still love the MC Hammer pants!

  • Awesome Eddie!!!

  • I think this time period was just before Eddie sort of hit middle age. Still had the fire of youth in him. It can't be stopped really.

  • Cathedral imao is his best bit...he looks like a spastic!!with a mullet!!

  • Damn He is hella good though better than lol Sambora What do you think? wtf yeah!!!!!!

  • whats a hella?

  • hell-of-a...dumbass

    Cathedral[Diver Down]

    Spanish Fly[Van Halen 2]

    Mean Street[Fair Warning]

  • you no hwen eddie does harmonics.... when he depresses the tremolo arm and hits the harmonic and bends the arm back up, when he hits it, he like slides it ? you no what i mean ? anyone got anymore info on it ?

  • God damnit. Look at that fingerwork. He dances around those frets just like they do not exist, fuck me.

  • wow his tremelo picking is amazing

  • my cock almost fell off

  • LMFAO

    thats eddie for ya

  • The Best solo ever :),

No one can handle him d:

He is the best of the best

    and my god :D

  • i prefer the original part of spanish fly, but this is the best solo ever! EVH rocks!

  • I was a cunt hair from going to this very concert back in 86. One of his finest solos ever!

  • thankyou for putting the full version on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • whats the name of the solo starting 3:42

  • cathedral off of "Fair Warning'

  • cathedral is off of diver down

  • i like is pants :P

  • MASTER!

  • gosh he's so good that smoke rises from the guitar

  • thats a really bad for you cig

  • no one plays guitar like eddie van halen. period. there are shredders out there but no one can make the guitar talk like he can. sure, he cant play 6 string arpeggios at 180 bpm. but to the people that can do that dont make the guitar talk like he does. bottom line, eddie van halen ripped the guitar a new asshole.

  • Eddie Van Halen rocks. He always has. Those of you who says his playing is mediocre, tell that to the thousands of wannabes who have taken his individual style and turned it into an entire style of music. He created a standard, people. There's been better, but he knows that.

  • thats the best shit eVWERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

  • I prefer him sober on his Music Man guitar. Regardless, he is in the top 3.

  • I remember Ed saying in an interview back in the 80's, when asked about being referred to as the best, he said I'm just a punk kid who plays guitar.

  • r u saying hes bad or good

  • Comment removed

  • i liked his playing on the 1st few lps, he had something to prove & he played w/ an intensity that was mind blowing.. his leads were white hot & he has all the substance along w/ the sizzle.. to me his best talent is his creativity, the tunes he's written & i love the guitar solos & fills he created, the taps, squeels, harmonics, chirps, & all that is just the iceing, but i always wished i could write rock tunes like Eddie can..

  • i used to think this was amazing, but after listening to more music, you begin to pick out things that make his playing seem mediocre. dont get me wrong, i think hes good. but i think there is deffinately better.

  • Its not that hes the best, its he created that sound.. before this nobody in rock in roll but jimmy page tapped.. now alot of bands do. He revolutionized many aspects of the guitar and made ppl know there was things you could do with a guitar that nobody had ever heard or seen before, yeah with practice and todays technology people are better but will never had the impact that eddie did

  • well said, he was the inventor & there's always gonna be someone who will do it a bit faster, a bit smoother, slicker, or put a new twist on it, but like i've heard his peers say, since Hendrix, no one has had the impact on the Guitar world like this dutch kid, Eddie sez, "i created quite a rukus"..lol

  • like?

  • Well stated !!!! I also thought he was the best. Until I grew up.

  • Eddie rules, no question. Take this, I had a discussion with some 25 year old, says Eddie is no one and forgotten. A big Pearl Jam fan he was, says Michael Mccready is better than Eddie. I walked out of that conversation and told the kid he was lost!!!

  • Ed at his absolute best...

  • That would probably be the Fair Warning era.(1981)

  • i'm not used to the dry tone that he has now adays.

back when roth was there, he had a real thick juicy tone, but now it isn't there.

his playing is still the greatest of all time though.

  • OK This KICKS ASS!!!!!!

  • EVH rules

  • Daily inspiration. Thanks!

  • Eddie truly is the friggin yoda of guitar. He plays a wide range of types of songs, he made tapping, divebombs, squeals, etc famous, and he single handedly created an entire decade of music (the 80's). Without van halen, hair metal and glam metal would have never existed. No other guitarist in history, not even Hendrix, has done that much. Simply put, he's the best guitarist the world has ever seen. Keep on rockin Van Halen!!!

  • ....simply put, Edward has single handedly molded the guitar and its functions to the highest level.....

  • @EddieIsKing2010 Without Hendrix there wouldn't be a Vanh Halen.... He nearly INVENTED Distortion!

  • @marckonii not even close. hendrix was influential cause of what he did musically. the distortion and sonic experimentation on Electric Ladyland are just bonuses. link wray invented distortion. eddie is more influential, but unfortunately, a lot of people took his tricks and turned them into wankfests like dimebag darrell songs. jimi is still better though, cause he truly could make the guitar come alive and speak

  • @1JAT1 I Know^^ I just wanted to defend Jimi

  • @EddieIsKing2010 Don't take this the wrong i'm a guitar player and i attempt to play some EVH stuff. But i can't help but say that Led Zeppelin had a lot to with the hair band movement too. Not taking away from how groundbreaking the first VH album was. Ed single handedly changed everything. Not just by style but the fact he was the first one to customize his guitar, amp, pedals to his liking. Only Hendrix was before this guy, and his playing was shit. but He had a very important role.

  • wow !!! i heard many version of this and it s true , this is a great version - thank 5150evh5150

  • this is probably the best version i've ever heard

  • Wow, another great version of Eruption!! Check out my version on my page!!

  • i love the souond of that tappping lick at 1:33, amazing shit right here, evh is a fuckin beast, point blank

  • Eddie is amazing.

  • EVH is the man.

  • damn!

  • hall my go to musid my is MARICELA

  • I must have watched that tap part startin at 5:05 - 7:12 about million times when I first got this video back in the 80's.

  • if Randy wuz still alive . . . . would VH own him? hmmm, all guitar players' questions. (Whatever) VH iz jammn' here. R.Rhoads R.I.P & Randy, u live 4ever!!

  • 2:01 how does he do that?

    anyone know?

  • harmonic dive bomb, hes hits the2nd or 3rd fret harmonic and puls the wammy bar on teh floyd rose bar at near enough the exact same time, takes practice to do it like he does though

  • Simply put...the greastest rock n roll guitarist ever. He's a living legend. How many men can say they invented a playing style. Talk about heart and soul... and all put into the sound he has.

  • This changed my life the first time I saw it. The man at the absolute peak of his powers.

  • i love eddie!!! he's the best, and i know people who have compared him to that douche from green day....dumb asses.

  • Isn't Eddie playing an early version of "316" in some solo on this video?

  • There is no 316 here and considering this was taken in 1986 and that is 5 years before Wolfgangs birth.

  • he does play 316 right before this part of the solo(I have the DVD), he just didnt have a name for it...

  • 316 is the birth date of Eddie´s son so Impossible that 316 was played at this concert maybe a pre-316?

  • I know thats where the name came from, thats why it wasnt published til after his son was born...its the same song just not named.

  • he wrote it but he had no use except for live solos until his sons birth go search van halen slolos on myspace it has the full video

  • theres another video of this on youtube with 316 go whatch and be proved wrong

  • The funny thing is, this isn't even his best from the 5150 tour. The Montreal bootleg is even better.

  • This is the most life-changing 10 minutes of guitar playing I've ever encountered. I studied it hardcore in the 80's when I was in junior high, dissecting it apart riff by riff, and actually learning to play it, and I still like to revisit this piece from time to time now that it's on You Tube. This is the master at work. It is playable if you devote enough time to it, but imagine creating it. Ed, you're a legend.

  • this solo owns

  • All who question EVH guitar ability and his innovation need to go back to the years 1979-1986 and read what was written about Eddie then. He mesmerized the guitar world. To put Eddie anywhere below nr.1 is an act of ignorance and biased emotions instead of letting the history, innovation and the ability to be the true judge of what is right. No guitarist has captured our imagination more then Eddie Van Halen has.

  • Best comment ever. I agree 100%

  • Eddie will be remembered like we remember Mozart today. A genius and innovator that dared to be different and re defined the electric guitar for all other to follow. So the moral of the story is that Ed is the leader and all others are merely followers.

  • eddie is the king y. malmtein cant compare. steve vai is the biggest eddie ripp of in the world. bow down eddie invinted every thing you see people play now adays hermonic taps hermonic rakes hammer ons screams lock nuts and invinted copper pick ups

  • amen

  • i wanna learn this solo

  • all is amazing!!!

  • 2:31 - 2:35 is amazing!

  • #70? more like #1,, not many guitarist go out and improvise every night for 10 minutes like he does...and sound like a god

  • I've seen 15 min. solos that contain mainly different tapping techniques...how could u consider a guitarist of that magnitude #70?..I'm goin with 22addis he is #1!

  • lets not forget randy rhoads here...

  • Randy Rhoads is/was a great guitarist, but Eddie is definently just a tad bit better, and im not tryin to compare guitarist by whose better, im simply just stating my opinion

  • yeah its funny though how eddie recorded the most famous and most unique guitar solo of its time by accident.... and was just playing it normally in the studio not knowing at all that it was being recorded. you cant compare eddie van halen to all of these shred guitarists of today. all they care about are notes per second. i highly doubt any players of today could play this. they may be able to play it faster but not with as much soul.

  • Yes but something they all lack is rhythm. They may be able to shred faster but thats about all they can do, it gets boring after 20 seconds.

  • wowzers this is awesome!!!!!

  • In my opinion this is the best freakin'solo Eddie ever made.

It will kick everyones ass, untill the end of time.

    Hahaha

  • the camera cant keep up with eddies tremolo picking

  • Friends,

Just think of the total devotion to vulgarity required to learn to play this way. Amazing!

  • best ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • i have the tape!!ITZ FRIGGIN AWSOME!!!!

  • i have the tape!!ITZ FRIGGIN AWSOME!!!!

  • UGHH if someone can tell me wut the solo at 2:57 is that would be awsome

  • its from the song "eruption"

  • his original kramer, or was it a fender? Anyhow, both guitars had only one knob which controlled the volume on the guitar. During his solo Cathedral, he kept turning on and off to get that sound which was nice...

  • His first self made "Frankenstein" was a mix of Fender and Gibson.

  • the best ever guitarrist in the whole world in the whole guitar times...

    EDDIE, THE KING!!!!!!!!

  • Holy shit, Eddie Van Halen kicks ass. He is incredible. I'd safely say the greatest guitarist of the 1970's.

  • I'm pretty sure Van Halen's first album was released in 1979, so he got there pretty late.

More like '80s, but I take your point.

  • he is the only man i would ever make love to

  • lol, I bet he knows how to use his hands...mmmm..... lol jk

  • The cig at the tip of the guitar just adds to the awesomeness

  • Eddie is such a rip off of god

  • hendrix is good but eddie 1 ups him!

  • man he's having fun

  • ok toxicromantic69.

how can eddie be all effects? have you heard spanish fly? that's on a freakin' classical guitar, no effects there.

and i highly doubt you could do anything like this within a month of playing and anyway if you have such a problem with it why even say anything? that's just bringing attention to yourself.

oh and btw EDDIE IS A GENIUS! XD

  • Cool.

  • toxicromantic69 you dont know the last thing about playing jinni is good but nothing close to eddie and i really dont know how you could say that after watching this

  • i used to really argue for eddie because he is my favorite guitarists, but the bottomline has nothing to do with talent speed accuracy, its his sound that draws people in more than any other gitarist in the world, his playing just feels different theres no other precise way to explain it, i dont need a reason i just enjoy listening to him more than any other musician

  • sos un capo

  • caraca mano,o cara do faustaum eh maluco ,era pra julgar a dança dos famosos,e ele falou do personagem do carinha lah!

  • 3:42 - 4:50 is sick! my guitar teacher can almost do that perfectly. i think he said all he does is volume up and down with the effects of chorus, delay, reverb and some other stuff maybe

  • its just delay. he turns the delay to that amount of time and then turns the knob up and down while fingering things.

  • Eddie's Kramer Frankenstein has one knob. The Volume knob that says "tone" This knob he is using on that part. search on google and you know.

  • it's called Kramer 5150. and i know all about delay techniques and and he is using the VOLUME knob which is the only one on this guitar.

  • Hail to the king !!

  • THE most well written guitar solo of all time!

  • that is actually indeed pretty sick \:)

  • awesome

  • yes he's a super human...like me. ed's by far the greatest guitar player ever

  • Is he really human?

  • fuckk hes good

    fuck you tommy

  • I sorry to all you Led Zep lovers but Jimmy Page is SHIT compared to Eddie!!!

  • amen.

  • No one is, ever was or ever will be as good as Hendrix!

  • I prefer Eddie to Hendrix but saying Jimi had no creativity is idiotic. As i say, I like EVH more than Jimi but to say he wasn't creative is insane. EVH RULES!!!

  • Jimi Hendrix did what every other guitar player did in his time. He played the pentatonic scale in E or F sharp. Theres no doubt hes talented but I wouldn't consider him a creative. He definitely did not change the style of music as Eddy did.

  • Well Eddie popularised tapping and just taking electric guitar that one step further. Hendrix was just unorthodox at the time. I prefer Eddie but they're both great.

  • I dont know about what you guys are saying, they are two different type of styles and both change the guitar playing. But saying Jimi sucks like that just isnt right.

  • Lets leave it at, THEY BOTH ROCK!!!

  • what the fuck are you on man
