There was no mate good enough (if you like) for the rightful king, One was created for him. Unlike the Greek Pigmalion, or Galatia, this one was created especially for Llew Llaw, to love, but alas, she preferred his friend and rival. The Poet Robert Graves has a lot to say about her and her story. Even if it's become unpopular to credit Graves these days, we still cling the the interpretation he gave us. Aren't we smart?
Please don't confuse Blodeuwedd with some sort of goddess or queen or something. She's a fictional character from the medieval Welsh literature. Nothing more or less. You could compare her to characters like Sleeping Beauty or the Swan Princess or something, just without the fairytale-part.
@Garfielda89 Sleeping Beauty and the Swan Princess are characters in folk tales. Fairy tales and mythology are examples of different types of folk tales. How literally you choose to read them is a personal choice. Apart from those known to come from ancient civilisations, most folk tales are very old stories that were only formally written down and consolidated from the Mediaeval period onwards - this is not to say they were only created then however.
@acapae however, there are hardly any to none evidences that these stories are older than the first codex that contains them. I'm not saying that they can't be older, I'm just saying as long as we can't time travel, we can't know more than that they were written down in the Middle Ages and are at least that old.
And my main point is actually, that the character of Blodeuwedd, no matter when she was invented, is plainly fictional and not a reference to some ancient pagan goddess.
Blodeuwedd is one of the characters from the "Four branches of the Mabinogi", which are medieval Welsh manuscripts.
Gwydion, who has magical abilities, creates her from flowers for his foster-son Lleu who is cursed by his mother to never have a human wife. Later in the story, Blodeuwedd betrays Lleu with a man called Gronw and they try to kill Lleu to be together. But it doesn't work and in the end Gwydion turns her into an owl.
Actually, it's really worth reading the four branches. :-)
what is the story of Blodeuwedd ? im presumming she is a fertility goddess as the may queen is associated with beltane... DtB sings about the celtic deities doesnt he? this is a lovely song.
well... as i know the story Blodeuwedd (means flower face) was a woman who was created by Math the magician, to be the wife to a king (i forgot his name sorry). She was the most beautiful woman on earth, for she wasn't mortal woman, but made from flowers and magic. But, she fell in love with a man who wasn't her husband, and they tried to kill him. But tehy couldn't, and he flew away as an eagle, wounded. Math found him, an healed him, and cursed Blodeuwedd: she is the owl now, hunting at night.
Does anyone else hear threads of Nothing Else Matters in this song, I wonder if this wasn't used as inspiration for Metallica.... hmm

I've been a fan of Damh the Bard since I first heard "Song of Awen".

This nearly brought a tear to my eye. It's just that beautiful. I'm beginning on the path of druidism myself, and Damh is a real inspiration.
