In my opinion its a must. I would tell anyone to keep their thumb at about the halfway point of the back of the neck, but, I work it around, like a dance. Here's why.
Especially for the low strings, you're really stretching if you've got your thumb wrapped around the top, and that's hard on the metacarpals and wrist. For higher strings you don't need so much hand in there. Its a mobility thing, helps to glide around the neck, but every one is different.
I overlapped them. I do it with a lot of stuff. But I took each layer and assigned it to a certain speaker so that it would stand out a little better. I did a lesson about it if you are interested.
hey man i played a les paul at the store. it was great. i didnt have enuff on me i wasnt expecting it to be 599 the guy marked it down for me tho to 499..so instead i got a nice line 6 spider amp. i'll go back for the les paul after a paycheck or 2 :P
by the way will you ever do a vid on how to play most of this song? that'd be kool (:
Well you might want to try all sorts of guitars to see what you like, but I'm gad you liked the Paul. The spider amps are pretty sweet - always wanted one. Equipment gets to be expensive though.
I've had requests but, I'm just so busy that I barely have time to explain how to play any of my stuff.
hey man i respect your opinion and im about to buy a les paul. about how much are the gibons. and would u mind telling me the huge difference between them.
I would imagine that a Gibson would run you close to a grand or so, but that's for a standard, newer model.
I'm not much of a guitar instrument expert other than just playing, but I'm assuming that the stock pickups in Gibsons are better than Epiphones typically, I'm sure the wood is of a higher quality in the neck at least, and the action is probably set just perfectly. I'll play on anything if I like the action, I like les pauls because they actually have some weight to them.
oh i see, well i geuss i'm going to get an epi les paul cause they really sound great and plus its affordable.
i'm going to a music store to get new gear and plus to look for a good les paul so maybe i can try out both gib and epi and kind of gather my own thoughts.
thanks i appreciate your lessons, you are hands down one of the most knowledgable guitar players and teachers i have seen. you know a simple and affective way to do everything.
I use an epi and to be honest it sounds really good and its a great guitar to play on. Took me some time getting used to because I used to play on an old Ibanez R350, but it was the smarter choice.
Appreciate your compliments - I just try my best to help others, I actually don't consider myself to be very knowledgeable though ;)
No, I live in Ohio out in the middle of nowhere - beautiful rolling country though, but I have family all over the south - I want to visit Savannah really bad!
Thanks for the sub - sorry I'm not in the area to do a little jammin', but I don't even get much time to practice these days anyways.
I haven't owned an amp in years. had 3 Crates, and they are excellent, but they go right at the 2 year mark like clockwork.
I use a Line 6 toneport UX2 which in my opinion is a must have. Plugs into your computer, get some cheap monitors, I use Ableton for recording, but the toneport is cheap and powerful. You'll think you're in heaven - good for vocals too :)
so you'r using a line 6 toneport..plugged into your computer and playing it out of your speakers?...the toneport thing is what makes your guitar sound so smooth and clean? or is that all in the strings and the guitar itself.
The action on my guitar is pretty nice and it came equipped with some really beefy sounding pickups, not sure the model number or brand, so I'm sure that helps for a full sound, but the toneport is definitely sick as hell.
On my channel, I have a 3 part video lesson series on writing a solo. If you watch it 1 - 3, you'll see the whole process of how I do everything, and you'll basically get a demo of the toneport. You can pick one up for about $100 now I think - I think you'll dig the videos.
tabs please lol omg this song is so fucking great i love it

i notice your thumb behind fret board, i tend to keep mine around, is that an issue? or is it personal preference?

Did you use a pitch effect? Or did you overlap two guitar recordings on the lead riffs?
