I think Ray McGovern is an honest man, and I like his style... but remind me why patriotism is a good thing?
I care for the well-being of all the people on earth, regardless of national boundaries... not more or less for those in my country or those outside. Why be proud of an accident of birth?

Patriotism is love of country and its highest, as opposed to its basest, ideals.
Nationalism is the belief that one's country is superior to all others in every way, even when one's country acts according to the basest of motives.
So one can be a patriot and not be a nationalist. That's the difference.
When I listen McGovern expose what he does in his talks, I hear a man acting in the noblest American tradition: speaking truth to power and damn the consequences.

But love of a country, almost always means that you love whatever your country does is okay... (and besides, Idealism is a bad thing).
Patriotism often results in the subject caring more for the subject's compatriots...
I would challenge the possibility of being patriotic without being a nationalist.

No, I don't believe that one nation is superior to another, and, particularly when it comes to foreign policy, the US has done horrific things over the decades. None of these detracts from the American people or its land. These things detract from our government, which bends to the will of corporations.
Those Americans who stand up for corporations -- knowingly or unknowingly -- are unpatriotic. I take your point. But I will stand up for my definition and not their definition.

Rumsfeld's comments about the chemical weapons suits (in the Army, we call them MOPP gear) is just plain stupid. When we go into full scale combat operations, it is standard procedure to be in MOPP Level 1 or 2. BTW, MOPP stands for "Military Oriented Protective Posture." Level 1: Pants and Shirt; Level 2: Add protective shoes; Level 3: Add mask; Level 4: Add protective gloves.

yes mostly. the US dollar is once again the sole oil purchasing currency. The Iranians, who were planning on opening up a similar euro bourse have now backed down out of fear they might go the same way as saddam. The US is setting up a very permanent prescence in Iraq. Even when the troops are gone, the country will probably remain a US client state for decades, giving full leverage over its oil supplies. All will be well for US global supremacy.

Don't worry. I can tell this is too much for you. For the pain I suggest you go to a doctor, but Im guessing he'll reach the conclusion I already have. You don't have a brain. It must be something else, like a pile of shit, that is clogging ur head.
