8800 ultras in sli will perform faster than a 4850x2. Price is the issue though and even today they still fetch a premium on ebay. It says alot about the 8 series and it says even more about how consoles have held back game development.

L4D2 would crash out of nowhere, Project IGI didn't display correctly, (it looked like the image was put into a blender) and the drivers I got from NVIDIA constantly Blue Screened my PC. Even after uninstalling the drivers and putting in a different card I still get Blue Screens from that card and its drivers. However, cards like the 7900GTX ftw still and I like their GTX 590's.

Its still a good card, but the 8xxx series is about 5-20% slower than the 9xxx series. Aging like the 7xxx did.

You actually payed for an HD4850X2? You must REALLY be stupid. You could have gotten 2 HD4850 1GB and of had $100 left over. The HD4850X2 is $300. You could have gotten a GTX280 or GTX285 and still of had 20 or so bucks left over.

And if you like ATI so much, you could have gotten TWO HD4870 and Crossfire them for...10 or 15$ more.

HD4850X2 is ATI's biggest fail besides the 2xxx series.

nah I didnt pay $300 for the card. I got it for $200. Its a 2 GB series and it is faster than a GTX 285 or 280 plus cheaper. I dont have dual PCIe slots on my motherboard so crossfiring 2 cards was not an option. Also, at the time this card was cheaper than 2 HD4870s. not sure what prices are. Yes, i'm an nVidia fan boy. Yet the only card I even owned from them was an MX440 when I was too young to even remember what the card was really like. I've owned the X800 XT PE, the X1950XTX and the HD4850 I own now. So I don't know where you got nVidia fanboy from. And there is no way the HD4850x2 is faster then the GTX285 or GTX280. So good day.

it actually is faster. But its two HD4850s built into one card vs. a single GTX280 or 285 so it has an unfair advantage. Also the 4870 x2 is only 5 fps faster than the 4850x2.

ATi cards have more compute performance, there architecture is mainly build for CAD work, rendering as such, they are cheaper to make than Nvidia cards and also more powerful for the price, BUT, because of how they are designed, they do not perform as good as the nvidia cards, but still they always have the latest technology, like GDDR5, 55nm 40nm and the list goes on.

i agree fully, but no one knows what tech they will come out with in '10. I just think that the 295 is way to much to be spending one just one thing that will be outdated in a year or so. I agree the 295 might future proof your system, but no one knows how good games will run on it in '10. Their isn't much point of spending so much money back then on an Ultra when it costed few hundred bucks more than the GTX where the Ultra is like a tad better. Where using the SAME EXACT Core, basic differences were the clocks. Only a bit optimized on the Ultra, the GTX was the monster. With that extra money, could have bought better ram, psu, cpu, hd, bigger monitor etc. But those two are gone now. They still can compete but gtx280 (the video card that was said to get a tflop) and the 4870

i cant tell the big difference except for the performance. The Ultraxxx ran the shizzle a bit smoother, easiest to notice when the cam is in the tunnel with the cars. Also the snow looks more realistic (first scene) it isnt as blueish-dark as the GTX.

The gtx is very close to the ultra- i overclocked mine (i have 2) to 800mhz per core and 2.4ghz RAM- I had to max the fans so it sounds like the inside of a jet engine, but the speed it amazing. I got an average of 60fps with everything max in 1080p high def.
