  • Lost song of the early 90s

  • I always thought that this song sounded like a song left over from one of the Desmond Child & Rouge albums......

  • genial,genial desmond child

  • I love this song; takes me back to the summer of 1991 when my daughter was just born :) I hadn't seen this video before - love the towers in the background!

  • That chick knows she's wasting her time, right? Just sayin'! ;)

  • paul stanley co-wrote this song.. don't know if he is credited though.. and it sure sounds like paul in the chorus

  • I actually remember this song:)

  • How to make a wannabe singer who is an effeminate gay guy seem str8:

    1. thick biker hair weave. check.

    2. fake sculpted sideburns like Michael Jackson. check

    3. backward baseball cap. check.

    4. bulky hood jacket. check.

    5. kiss and make out with semi-attractive woman every 10 seconds. check.

    6. gritty background locations, lots of rusty pipes. check.

    7. song about long term relationship with female. check.

    8. try to copy Springsteen's sound. check.

    Epic fail.

  • even in the end he still gets the girl

  • Are there any rockers on the same album this came from?

  • @bucky468 well basically theres just one uptempo rockin tune. search for`:

THE PRICE OF LOVIN' YOU - Desmond Child

right here on youtube - was previously performed by BONFIRE but Desmond never liked that version.

  • @cherokeee CHER ORIGINATED THIS SONG!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @PopCulture20 Yeah, I know - it was first featured on her 1989 Solo Album... full of various cool Desmond Child/Diane Warren Songs, among this one :o)

  • @PopCulture20 ya but he wrote the song

  • hey! what's the big deal about desmond's album? it's fucking awesome. "The gift of life" & "you're the story of my life" could make it as big hits but they didn't, that's no reason to talk crap about the album, honestly =)

  • Wow I never knew that Desmond Child is a New York guy.

  • This would make for a perfect Bon Jovi song.

  • Desmond's responsible for my favourite Ratt album - Detonator.

  • One of the better songs that so-called popualr radio never played enough.

  • this guys a fricken genius!

  • Is it just me or can anyone else hear Paul Stanley in the "woh oh ooh ooh oh..." refrain?? Havent heard this in years and just realised then...I think??

  • @pongylenton YEAH, its probably just you :o)

I extra checked the Albums credits again and Paul Stanleys name is nowhere to be found... sorry. Though the mentioned Background vocalists include prominent names like Mitch Malloy, Mark Free & Kane Roberts among others...

  • @cherokeee Someone does a great approximation of the Star Child, then!! I swear I can hear his voice.

  • Does anybody else hear Paul Stanley in the "woh oh oh ooh oh oh oooooh" refrain!? Im sure its him.

  • thanks 4 uploading the video. this is 1 of my fave song wayback when. it's my 1st time to see this..

  • I'm sorry but I find this song and other songs from his solo album rather disappointing. I've seen this with other gifted songwriters. They are dynamite when collaborating with others but can't pull it off on their own. This song is a perfect example. It just doesn't take off like "Livin' on a Prayer" or hook you like "I Was Made for Lovin' You" Sorry, but Desmond doesn't cut it solo.

  • @almcneil2 my thoughts exactly....when I first heard that a guy named D.Child wrote all the songs on A.Coopers 'trash'album, some aerosmith songs, bon jovi songs etc, I thought'that guy is a genious', but how can such a talented person record his own album and produce it so crappy....maybe it's because he's gay....on the other hand, rob halford is also gay, so is freddie mercury and they sing with brass balls wich lots of straight singers don't have...puzzzling...

  • desmond child

  • this guy is one of the greatest song writers to walk the planet

Check the fine print in your Kiss, Bon Jovi , Cher and just about every body who has made Numder 1 songs albums . You WILL see the name D Child . This Guy has written songs with everyone and is a LEDGEND

  • Uh... in the hands of Bon Jovi, this song would've gone through the roof.

  • jajajajaa sorry...but Jon's voice?? you're wrong!!! check Sambora!!! he wrotte 5 songs for this almbum :)

  • @igotanaxetogrind I agree with you.

  • well this certainly brings back some memories...

im on twitter, facebook etc if youre interested!

    @desmondchild

  • thank you so much for doing this video....~smiles~

  • God! Whats wrong with you people?

    Sounds like a Sanka commercial.

  • Personally, I like Cher's version better.

  • Cher gives it more strength....and combine with the more "ballad" style I vote for Cher version

  • I Love his album!!! I'd wish there'll be any video of I don't wanna be your friend

  • Wow, Shinedown really ripped this pre-chorus off in their song Second Chance. Funny how my fav part of Second Chance was the only Desmond Child part haha.

  • Kind of interesting that he is seen canoodling with a girl in this video and is actually gay.

  • cher is the best......... i make it a remix for this single 1989, remix in 2007

  • is he the delmond child who was work with kiss, bon jovi, alice cooper and others???

    sorry for my bad english

  • Yes. That's him.

  • Ricky martin too, but ricky had to put put for desmond or he wouldn't right for him, when ricky swallowed he got the whole album

  • He also worked with Ratt.

He was the producer and songwriter for their 1990 album Detonator. Diane Warren co-wrote a song with him called Givin' yourself Away.

  • Wise choice to share it, totally worth the lack av video quality!! thanks

  • The dancing from the black chicks is some of the most unintentionally laughable stuff I've seen in ages....

It's disappointing that having done such stellar work for other artists & bands, Desmond released such a lukewarm, lackluster album.

  • Chers version of this is better...and she did it in '89, two years before this. Her version has more soul to it.

  • Yeah, it's true!!!!!!! Cher's version is sadder. He is an example of somebody who thought that because he is a good song written and a good producer, he could be a good singer, and it obviously didn't work.

  • This song kicks ass! Well except for the lyrics and the video has some of the worst dancing I've ever seen.

  • Dude t desmond might be working with tokio hotel! one their new album!!

  • He's going to be guest judge on Swedish Idol on Friday. XD

  • It wouldn't be his song completly because Hanson do have the songwriting credits also. Maybe he had more to do with the lyrics and Hanson wrote the music.

  • Well, notice the style of that song compared to the rest of Hanson's album. All the other songs to my knowledge are really upbeat and what not, this song is a slow ballad style common under Child. I guess the only way to really find out would be to contact Child himself, that isn't neccesarily hard for a person like me.

  • @Glomgold83, did you contact Child?

  • Glomgold83, how do you know that "Weird" cowritten with Hanson is Desmond's favorite song and it means more to him than Hanson?

  • Well, go on songfacts, google that site and research the song Weird by Hanson, it says clearly that Child said that it was his favorite song he wrote, he only admitted this roughly two months ago when he got inducted to the Songwriters Hall of Fame. But yeah, if it is his favorite song as it wasn't really that much of a hit, it means a lot to him. Hanson just perform it, I really think it is his song completly.

  • It would be nice if Child would make an album where HE sings his best known songs, such as Livin on a Prayer, Dude (Looks Like A Lady), even Liva La Vida Loca, and of course is favorite song he wrote, Weird. I wonder how he would sing Weird, as it means more to him than the people who sang it.

  • This Desmond Child album should have made #1! You're The Story Of My Life also should have made #1 on the singles chart! I love this song also of course! 5 stars!

  • Could somenone pls upload the song "the price of loving you"? It's on the same album as "love on a rooftop"...thx a lot! that song's great...

  • Love Desmond! Sexy voice, great songwriting chops! There's another great song (a ballad) named "Obsession" from this same album that he co-wrote with Burt Bacharach. I know it was released as a single but I don't know if a video was ever made. Would love to see it on here if someone finds it ;-)

  • Another very underrated song.

  • Yeah, the Cher version is much better - but since he wrote it I'll give him props too.

  • i loved him in the 80's rock area, he did fantatic job back then writting and producing for many artist like cher, bon jovi, bonnie tyler.... gosh, i love that 80's rock.

  • excelente compositor es una verdadera lastima que no haya mas compositores de la talla del sr.child en el genero del rock.

  • i love cher's version, i think her version is better. i love Desmond. is he GAY?????

  • very good song... great composer... but i actually like cher's voice better on this song

  • therockbrigade got it all right..ALL right.. ;)

  • Yeah! Desmond Child is indeed a great composer/songwriter for many great rock artist!

  • its a great composer and great songwriter, so many hits come from this man !! weldone

  • nobody claimed it was autobiograpical, but the message of the song Gift of Life clearly talks about "Child abortion" ...sure Desmond might just made that up for the lyrics. Dont agree with the wig acusation though, He had that kinda hair in the 70s already... back then was no wig either.

  • he wrote maybe the best hard rock 80s Songs!! but he is a snob arrogant and he should be in this video with a guy not a girl!!! ....

  • i love Desmond Child! He's worked with so many great rock artists from the 80's.

  • you're right but the lyrics specifically say "we weren't ready for a child in our lives, we were children ourselves but it still hurts inside" Later on on the song he says "we weren;t ready then but I know our choice was right... pretty heartbreaking if you ask me

  • if you're able to find the cd on ebay, once you get it read the lyrics, he's not talking about a love taken away. If you don't have any luck finding the cd PM me. Maybe I can help

  • "Gift Of Life" the correct line is "I hope you're still up in heaven". It's got a somewhat "anti-choice-but-at-the-same-time-pro-choice" feeling to it...

  • "Discipline"

  • Great compositor and great vocal!! Thanks for posting!! yeahh!!!

  • Awesome song. Reminds me of SUMMER!!!

  • For years ive been a huge fan of Desmond Childand what he has done with Meat Loaf and the Scorpions are his best to date, keep writing fab songs pop or rock.

    Regards Dave

  • I absolutely love this version!Cher's version was kinda crappy.Anyone know where I can find this at??????

  • Its from Desmond Child´s 1991 Solo Album "Discipline".Shouldnt be hard to find a copy really cheap on ebay etc.

  • Hey really Cher's version was kinda crappy? Well Desmond Child wrote and produced that song on her Heart of Stone cd...so then it would be his fault if it is crappy...U wanna hear crappy...listen to Ronnie Spector mangle this tune

  • Desmond wrote the song but he didn't produce Cher's version so no, it wasn't his fault.

  • I beg to differ..his is listed as the producer on her the cd. He sang backup also on CHER's track...She had t-shirts made that said "I Survived Desomond Child" because he worked her ass off in the studio on this song.

  • Love on A Rooftop

    (c) 1987 Realsongs / SBK April Music, Inc. / Desmobile Inc. ASCAP

Written by Desmond Child, Diane Warren

    Produced by Peter Asher

Reading the liner notes on the cd inserts doesn't hurt a bit.

According to those, Desmond Child *only* produced (or co-produced) the 2nd, 3rd, 7th and 9th tracks of that album.

  • it really feels im presenting year 1980 8)

  • i love desmond child! thanks a lot for the music video

  • This guy is so underrated... And he's written so many hits for others.

  • Fucking love Desmond Child.
