The new (Michael Pluznick) MP Eco Pro 12 and 13" djembes are now in production! They will be available in the USA at X8 drums. We will also be shipping out in minimum orders of 10 drums from Bali if you live somewhere else. Contact me here if you are interested in ordering.
these are traditional mendiani rhythm solo techniques or phrases, part of a "djembe language" that is very specific... these phrases are not only musical but go along exactly with the traditional dance steps and footwork that go to this dance piece. The dance is used fro a certain ritual ceremony for young people going through initiation. The phrases cut through time to create a certain effect which helps to stimulate a desired response from the dance participants.
They're all good drummers, but I think the black guy in the middle is trying to mess the white guy up! He keeps looking over there, w/ a sly look, he's waiting for white-boy to mess up! LOL
Is it possible to get in a drum jam with the guy in the middle? That would be awsome. Is he Brulye? Where does he live? Lol, night never happen, but it would be great.
There is no such thing is "out of rhythm". There is no wrong way of playing weather it is out of sync/phase in sync in phase, unison, counter point..etc...It's all about the development between the players of patterns that can expand and contract through meter, tempo, time signatures.... Think of it as a river( Water is like a trillion trillion marbles sliding all around at different paces) surging down a stream, There are many levels of currents, obstacles, eddy's, But the river is ONE ....
theirresistableE: note you are listening to complex polyrythmic patterns...the brother in the middle is drumming with different measures..so it is in sync with the others, but is out of phase.

Holy cow! The solo phrasing at 0:54 is absolutely mind-bending. I've never heard that sort of feel in Mendiani before. Thanks.

@Explodingdrumsticks
I agree. It is one river and there are no correct paths taken and chosen, because it is all one path....much like life infact!
