Some of these postings are hysterical.. some are sad, and yet some are just downright MEAN! Everyone needs to remember, Christina led a VERY privileged life and was a spoiled BRAT! I just read Mommie Dearest. I am stunned that it is given it even an ounce of credibility. It would have been disregarded as laughable had it come from anyone but a movie star's daughter. Their mothers were lied to to get the children then told that the babys had died...that is were her Memphis baby came from. Joan knew this when she got them...that in it's self makes her a MONSTER! I believe that she was terrible to the older two because they couldn't be brainwashed like she did the younger ones...
It's so obvious from listening to this that what Christina said was true. She sounds so strident. Listening to Crawford in interviews in her laters years it is clear that she had softened. I think the twins have a different impression of Crawford because Crawford was a better mother to them than she was to the older two. There is no way that Christina could be making all of that up and I think crawford's disinheritance of her older children was beyond cruel.
One can only "assume" to know whether that woman was the person her daughter portrayed her to be in Mommie Dearest, but from what little investigating I've done on line, I think Christina's story checks out. There is irrefutable proof of much of what she says about what type of a mother and human being Joan Crawford was.
It all sounded rehearsed. How many ten and seven-year-olds sound that mature? None I've ever heard.. Oh yeah they got presents all right ,but they only got to keep one thing, the rest went to orphanages or hospitals. After the man left, Joan went into her room and opened all her porno gifts she recieved. Christina said Joan loved getting filthy and immoral pornography. She also said Joan loved hearing and telling dirty jokes.
There may be 3 sides to this story. What J.C. says, what Christina says and what really happened. As for the woman being a porn monger, it's entirely possible that Christina is mistaken. Even if it's true, I don't judge Crawford for that. But the fact that she likely did much of what is portrayed in the book and movie, Mommie Dearest, lied about Christina getting expelled from boarding school and disinherited Christina and Christopher out of her $2 million estate is despicable.

Helen Hayes, June Allyson, Betty Hutton and Eve Arden corroborated Christina's book Mommie Dearest, I read the book in the 80's and no child could make up the stuff she went through, I too had an abusive mother and totally related with the book. My mother wasn't an alcoholic, but I wished she was, because then there could have bee an excuse for the abuse. I read review on this book and there were a lot of inconsistencies in her book.

swear i just created an account to answer wannabeangel. read mommie dearest. seriously. joan crawford embellished everything and made her childhood seem worse then i really was. and her children did get beat. joan almost killed her daughter. and she went overboard only for the publicity. the children didnt even get to keep their gifts. she beat the crap out of her kids and was manipulative. christina forgave her. but really? amazing woman...?

@innertubeman2 I read Mommie Dearest. if it werent for that book though and the movie I wouldnt have done my research to find out what a wonderful woman she actually was. like I said Joan may not have been mother of the year and I think she did somehwat abuse them but remember late forties early fifties, a few hits was normal discipline. If you want to make a valid argument at-least do your research and dont base it off some book that is in all honesty partially false.

Joan Crawford was not mother of the year and probably did beat her children and had severe problems.but good god the woman had a more horrifying childhood then those 2, christopher and christina had. anyone could find that out if they do their research. Joan wanted to make sure her children had it better then she did, and that they were not spoiled hollywood children, unfortunatley she went overboard and I dont think she was aware of that!!!! she is an amazing woman though, that should be known!

@katastrophy6665 did I say that? no...I said Joan Crawford had a horrible childhood (rape, abuse etc.) and she even said in interviews and books that she tried to give her children a better up-bringing and she also didnt want people thinking they were spoiled brats just because they were "Crawfords kids". she even said herself she was probably to strict in making sure her kids had the right up-bringing, and as we found out she probably was pretty harsh at times. but Joan was a wonderful woman!!!

@wannabeangel83 She bought her children from a woman named Georgia Tann a baby broker out of Memphis TN. Mrs Crawford knew that the way she got them was illegal. Their mothers were lied to to get the children then told that the babys had died...that is were her Memphis baby came from. Joan knew this when she got them...that in it's self makes her a MONSTER! I believe that she was terrible to the older two because they couldn't be brainwashed like she did the younger ones...

It's so obvious from listening to this that what Christina said was true. She sounds so strident. Listening to Crawford in interviews in her laters years it is clear that she had softened. I think the twins have a different impression of Crawford because Crawford was a better mother to them than she was to the older two. There is no way that Christina could be making all of that up and I think crawford's disinheritance of her older children was beyond cruel.

One can only "assume" to know whether that woman was the person her daughter portrayed her to be in Mommie Dearest, but from what little investigating I've done on line, I think Christina's story checks out. There is irrefutable proof of much of what she says about what type of a mother and human being Joan Crawford was.

It all sounded rehearsed. How many ten and seven-year-olds sound that mature? None I've ever heard.. Oh yeah they got presents all right ,but they only got to keep one thing, the rest went to orphanages or hospitals. After the man left, Joan went into her room and opened all her porno gifts she recieved. Christina said Joan loved getting filthy and immoral pornography. She also said Joan loved hearing and telling dirty jokes.

There may be 3 sides to this story. What J.C. says, what Christina says and what really happened. As for the woman being a porn monger, it's entirely possible that Christina is mistaken. Even if it's true, I don't judge Crawford for that. But the fact that she likely did much of what is portrayed in the book and movie, Mommie Dearest, lied about Christina getting expelled from boarding school and disinherited Christina and Christopher out of her $2 million estate is despicable.

Helen Hayes, June Allyson, Betty Hutton and Eve Arden corroborated Christina's book Mommie Dearest, I read the book in the 80's and no child could make up the stuff she went through, I too had an abusive mother and totally related with the book. My mother wasn't an alcoholic, but I wished she was, because then there could have bee an excuse for the abuse. I read review on this book and there were a lot of inconsistencies in her book.

I'm sure Madonna's kids have already been forced to sign "non-disclosure" agreements. As Joan goes: Single mother, highly competitive, high stress career, admitted perfectionist, admitted drinking problem, strict disciplinarian, possible drug use and who knows what other issues all equals scary time for kids. Even if she wasn't physically abusive, I'm sure that her children saw some interesting things...that they should have shared with therapists not the world.

Can you imagine how the radio audience in '49 was eating this nonsense up (especially at Xmas)? People were dabbing their tear-filled eyes with tissues and handkerchiefs , thinking "oh, what a marvelous actress she is. How kind and generous of her to take four adopted children and making them her own. What a tremendous mother she must be".
Yeah, Joan was a good actress, but I'd certainly question how her mothering skills were after what Christina said about her.

@Vydio I don't think Child Abuse was seen in the same way back then that it is today. You pretty much had to permanently maim a child for it to be considered abuse, back then. Our Decorator hates parties, because his Mother, in the early sixties, used to have the servants trot him out during parties, and then make fun of him. He hates restaurants for pretty much the same reason. So apparently it was fashionable for glamorous women to be really mean, in public, to little boys.

I've decided to research this woman myself, for myself. I want to know the real Joan. Seeing how she is dead makes such an endeavor rather difficult. Her kids probably had more toys and crap than they knew what to do with and what kid doesn't know how to do a con job on their parents. If she snatched up one of their toys cause they liked it too much she probably had a good reason for it. We could use some of that today with all the kids stuck on their video games.
