Lots of those other countries with nationalized health care are actually bouncing back faster than the United States. The whole world got economically hit, but western europe and japan are recovering faster than we are.
By having health care coverage for all their citizens they have a healthier workforce and (especially with the auto companies) they don't have to worry about adding health care costs into their workers' salaries so they are better able to compete globally.

Sometimes I go down to the US to buy shoes, it's called a free market. People go all over to have private medical procedures done. Some Americans come up to Canada to have privately funded procedures done.
In one Kalispell private practice, there were 24 tumor removal surgeries on Canadian patience. The same practice removed tumors from a little over 100 Americans.

The MYTH is that not everyone gets coverage. The truth is: all low income children are covered under CHIPS. All elderly have Medicare. Those under the the poverty line are havey Medicaid.
This leaves the middle class. You need a job to have an income, so you must have a job.
This is where it gets complicated. Supply and Demand works not only on the free market, but also in the job market. If you're workplace does not cover you. Quit! Eventually if enough people refuse to work in a uninsured workplace, that business will be forced to adopt coverage. If coverage is poor, QUIT. Eventually they will need to offer good coverage.
the fact is in canada (yes i live in canada), you can never be turned down for something like tumor removal. there is a huge gap b/w that and in the US getting a letter from an insurance company that you are denied care b/c they will not pay for it.

What you described is a Social Democracy. This is different from full blown Socialism. Kinda like comparing HIV to full Blown AIDS.
Communism differs from Socialism in many ways.
In either case the Government is in control of 100% of the resources. In Socialism a strong leader (or group of leaders) is needed to steer the state. In Communism (TRUE Marxist Communism) the state runs it's self without the need of any superior class.
Communism does not work on a massive scale. People are just to greedy. But you can see Marx's Utopia (perfect communism) if you look at small groups here in america. Hutturitte and Amish communities are arguably the closest examples of a living communistic society. If we could make it work on a large scale I would be all for it.

what really upsets me is how people think subsidizing everything under the government works, for example, the auto companies that are subsidizes by the govt. during the bailout still have plummeting numbers, while ford who did not get subsidized is in the positive, also with healthcare, when you nationalize healthcare and give government control of medical insurance, you set millions up for failure, other countries have nationalized healthcare and they arent doin to hot

Lots of those other countries with nationalized health care are actually bouncing back faster than the United States. The whole world got economically hit, but western europe and japan are recovering faster than we are.
By having health care coverage for all their citizens they have a healthier workforce and (especially with the auto companies) they don't have to worry about adding health care costs into their workers' salaries so they are better able to compete globally.

I live in Northern Montana and I wonder if you people know how many Canadians (mostly 60+) come down here to have tumors removed?
They say the waiting list is too long.
I don't know how long the wait is.. but it is long enough they would rather pay Montana rates than wait.

Sometimes I go down to the US to buy shoes, it's called a free market. People go all over to have private medical procedures done. Some Americans come up to Canada to have privately funded procedures done.

In one Kalispell private practice, there were 24 tumor removal surgeries on Canadian patience. The same practice removed tumors from a little over 100 Americans.

if the care was so great in Canada why did they come down here?
and that was just one practice. I dont have numbers for any other practices.

The American Medical system is broken and flawed. People from around the world use the American healthcare system, yes, you know why? Because they are wealthy.
The American system works better for rich foreigners then it does for average Americans. Its a system designed to serve the Elite with the best treatment, and cut corners for Average Americans.
40 million uninsured Americans deserve coverage. The US is now the only western nation not to have the public option. Falling behind man.

Shven, you are right. The American system is broken. My point is there are other options than just a public option.
1)Get rid of a insurance companies right to deny coverage due to pre-existing conditions. No one will argue against that.
2)reform the malpractice suit laws to protect against BS lawsuits (this alone would cut medical costs and therefore coverage costs very significantly.
3)Offer more Pell Grants for Medical Students
there are many other options beside socialization.

But padre makes a good point there, its about insurance. If you don't get treated, your not insured.
You should not be denied for any reason what so ever. Doesn't matter your income, race, religion, chronic medical problems.
Private companies probably can't carry the burden of an entire nation without government help anyways, so why even have the middle men to drive up costs?

I agree with Padre on about 90% of what he says about the whole "america is already socialist" stuff. That is the big picture and He is right.
I am only debating a small piece of the picture, in this case the current health care debate.
As it stands right now in an E.R no one can be denied for any reason. So we already have Universal Health Care.
We everyone has access to Insurance. Either Private, medicare, medicaid, or CHIPS.
Why do we need another?
The issue is with Private Insurance (TBC)

The MYTH is that not everyone gets coverage. The truth is: all low income children are covered under CHIPS. All elderly have Medicare. Those under the the poverty line are havey Medicaid.

This is where it gets complicated. Supply and Demand works not only on the free market, but also in the job market. If you're workplace does not cover you. Quit! Eventually if enough people refuse to work in a uninsured workplace, that business will be forced to adopt coverage. If coverage is poor, QUIT. Eventually they will need to offer good coverage.
If all else fails UNIONIZE

the fact is in canada (yes i live in canada), you can never be turned down for something like tumor removal. there is a huge gap b/w that and in the US getting a letter from an insurance company that you are denied care b/c they will not pay for it.
this is about INSURANCE, not medical care.

The republicans have been giving hundreds of proposals, but Obama refuses to compromise on anything. He is taking advantage of his party being in complete control of the government and is trying to create a one-party system.
Have you read the bill? "death panels" are in the bill, but it is not as bad as the republicans say. its no different than the private companies advising patients when to remove life support.
The bill doesn't cover illegals, but has many loopholes they could exploit.

Socialism/social democracy/democratic socialism is like regulated capitalism but with more substantive gov't measures, according definitions I have looked at. In communism the state has 100% control of the resources and the people.

What you described is a Social Democracy. This is different from full blown Socialism. Kinda like comparing HIV to full Blown AIDS.
Communism differs from Socialism in many ways.
In either case the Government is in control of 100% of the resources. In Socialism a strong leader (or group of leaders) is needed to steer the state. In Communism (TRUE Marxist Communism) the state runs it's self without the need of any superior class.

Communism does not work on a massive scale. People are just to greedy. But you can see Marx's Utopia (perfect communism) if you look at small groups here in america. Hutturitte and Amish communities are arguably the closest examples of a living communistic society. If we could make it work on a large scale I would be all for it.
But it doesn't work, and can't work so speculation is useless.

Thats what I have been trying to say. This country is owned by lobbyists and the people don't get it they just want to keep up the left/right facade not realizing its two sides of the same coin. If they pass this just wait, it might not be tomorrow but in a decade or so we will be paying ridiculous amounts. The insurance companies are scum we need insurance reform then health reform. And maybe lobby reform before all that. But this is a rush into it without knowing country now so we are screwed.

I know Americans like to do things their own way, but the USA is the ONLY western country that does not have some form of public health care. It is NOT socialist to aim to have affordable health care for all! USA is a civillised country is it not? The goal of having everybody able to not live in fear that if they get sick it's all over, is a noble one. Somehow the USA spends the most on health per capita despite not having a public option. The system is inefficient, and there needs to be change.
