I came across a female tree and her fruit 10 years ago in Michigan (Detroit). I thought the tree was pretty and the fruit were edible. I picked up one the little fruit and broke the skin with my fingernail to test it and took a whiff...I found that to be a big mistake. I know the name of it now thanks.
ShesAccurseD, the SEED is edible, the Chinese seem to use a lot of them, the FRUIT, as you found out smells rather bad. There was a story about a woman who gathered a bunch of Gingko fruits, but them in a bag, then boarded the subway. By the time she got to her stop, even the homeless guys found another subway car to occupy!
