Some people these days think music is a sport where someone is better because of what he can do with strings. I am more interested in what emotions can be expressed with sounds. Instruments were made to simplify music making. Why is using something easier like an npc or a maschine not making music?
For all of you that like this and applaud this band, good for you, you have an excellent taste in music.... For thoes of you who think this is stupid and comparing it to fricking justin bieber, go find some culture, for Christ's sake......
Wow... 67Designer that is really quite a pretentious thing to say, how dare you presume to lecture the 32,911 people who have seen this and formed their own opinion on it based on your opinion. Taste is personal. Steve Reich, Terry Riley and the rest of those American pioneers were groundbreaking in what they did but as with a great deal of groundbreaking musical work they pushed to extremes in order to open new directions in music. There is plenty of exploration to be done with minimalism.

To all those of you who think this is good: Make yourselves familiar with the works of Steve Reich, Terry Riley, Louis Andriessen and Michael Gordon and David Lang - plus some of the serious jazzers. Then compare it with what Portico does here: Essentially, all they do is taking the idea of minimal/serial music and overlay it with a saxophone. This is music, designed to please the average listener - a smallest common denominator from jazz, minimal and pop. 3 stars out of 5 at best.
@67Designer That is one f the most stuck up things ive ever read as a comment on youtube. Believe it or not music IS written for 'average' people. Not stuck up elitists like yourself. Steve Reich and the others youv mentioned all have great merits as do 'serious jazzers' but because of the attitude and elitism of people like yourself it is completely inaccessible. Its because of comments like that (pure snooty crap) that people nowadays dont listen to that music.
I believe that good music is not usually written FOR people, many people play / write music because they like it and it's their expression. not to be rich. If everybody wanted their music to be liked by the masses, the it wouldn't evolve that much. nowawdays' "music for average people" (as you say), is not as inovative as it seems to average people, it is more likely to be a translation of what was avantgarde before circa 20 years, but for average listeners.
@percdann The problem is that if you give anybody to listen this kind of music they wont like, they're already brainwashed by commersialism, I love to share with people what I listen to, but when I do I regret it this is why I believe in elistism now. we should be proud that the reputation of this kind of music is not tarnished because of those people
@67Designer Weeeell. It does sound like three out of five stars in your rating system is an astronomically high rating on the average listener's scale. So that's settled then.
@jazzpolice1 What is tune?! What is a scale?! What is music?! Ponder these...
There are so many interpretations but at the end of the day it's music, to be enjoyed or not. Our cultural and social backgrounds and surroundings all effect our individual interpretations of key and musicality.
I agree it's not in tune according to the classic western scales that we are so used to and bombarded with on a daily basis but does that void it as musical expression? Certainly in my eyes it doesn't.
@jazzpolice1 Bloody hell. Did the milkman fuck your mum so hard that his dick knocked the sense out of you when you were in the womb? What the fuck are you saying?!

You can hear what they're 'trying' to do, but what's the point when there are so many other groups out there doing it SO much better.
The sax player is playing so out of tune it makes me feel physically sick!
Is nobody else hearing that???!!!!
