if xavi didn't touch the ball, villa is onsides, but he made an extra pass, so therefore since villa was behind the line of defense when xavi made the pass, he's offsides. but really, that's a tough call for the linesman, because he couldn't really see xavi make the second touch, and the referee is usually looking for fouls, not offsides. it was a bad call, but there were much worse calls than that during the world cup.

You can hardly blame the ref for that one. He's just BARELY BARELY offside. By a matter of centimetres. His head is in line with the defender up top but he's basically only got one foot offside, and that's it. If he had been back the whole 6 inches or so by which he is offside, he still would've scored.
Spain deserved this anyway. Portugal couldn't be bothered attacking. Their strategy was defend defend defend and take it to penalties, and when they went a goal down they had no idea what to do.

I would say he is BARELY offside (note that there is no s when there is an offside offense). As long as any part of his head, body, or torso is nearer to the goal line than the second to last opponent´s head, body, or torso, and the ball, then he´s offside as the video shows.
I´m glad that you´re blaming FIFA in that situation; as a referee myelf, offside is one of the toughest decisions to call, they need video replay because humans can´t always see offside as indicated by the video.
