  • Maureen Forrester was a great singer and her voice will ring forever in the ears of those who heard and saw her. Brava Diva!

  • @intelegentable Yes Maureen ,was a magnificent singer, Her voice was l believe a voice very close to the contralto color of K. Ferrier.´l had a great and very happy luck to sing with her when she started, as l was, We sang together J Strauss Zigeunerbaron of Strauss. l still can hear her magnificent color of contralto in my mind.. We both studied with Bernard Diamant a great teacher. Thanks for your comment. Jeanne.

  • Gorgeous voice and generous performer: she will be missed.

  • Glorious!

  • Diva! A Goddess. Unique! a lesson of taste-

  • @cmmenah

But she left, God, why? . she was still young Look for Mahler, she makes me cry.

  • @joanabanyeres She fulfilled the great work God had sent her for. She left her art for the world. Others should follow her steps to continue life. We shall encourage new voices and new artistry to know about her. Do not fell sorrow but happiness as she is with us yet. You seem a nice person. God bless you too.

  • Maureen admired for God

    .RIp dearest.

  • Meureen Forrester who just passe away had a intelligence of the text, of the music, that far oureached that of her comtaporaries... she was a visionary, in additino to beinf a God given vocal artist. Such a colour in her voices! Thank you Maureen... forever.

  • So great it's true.

  • Such a gorgeous voice...sumptuous. Thank you....

  • In memoriam...Repose et chante en paix! Merci Mo.

  • Truly great singing from a truly great artist. She will be missed.

  • The people complaining about her singing this music should note that there were not many countertenors (good or bad) around when this was recorded. (Major opera company cast records will confirm this). However, some those complaining see nothing strange about men singing music written for a female voice. Historically we are not always sure about who sang what or what the composers preferences were. But when someone gives such an outstanding performance, nothing else really matters.

  • @eyesk8er

While Orfeo wasn't sung by women in Gluck's time, you have a very good point. It was often transposed to fit a certain performer and to cater to the audience (as the composer would travel to different countries and perform it for different countries' opera houses and each country had a particular taste.)

For example, the French thought castrati were embarassing, and so, the French version of Orfeo was transposed down for a high tenor.

  • @eyesk8er orfeo is pure Mythology, who cares about the voices, better a woman than a castrato or countertenor.

The version with a tenor voice looses many interesting moments.

  • I don't care for when women who are contraltos perform this role - I prefer it when a man who is a countertenor or castrati to do the role of Orfeo.

  • @EmilyGreene1984 Because you've already heard a castrato sing this role ? I'm impressed. My main problem with countertenors is that, however good they can be (Daniels or even top countertenor Scholl), and a lot of them are just average singers, they'll never have the vocal capacities of a great female mezzo or contralto. The irony being that quite a few women (Horne, Podles, to mention only two) sound way more manly than male contraltos.

  • A magnificent contralto voice .....such richness and expression!

  • And the voice of Maureen was even with more velvet directly. A great artist and a big huge point for Canada. Remember her, for ever. Another great Canadian singer Ben Heppner..

  • yes she sings with a lovely voice l sang with her in Canada, the voice was pure velvet. Hello Maureen if you see me

  • Beautifully sung! Brava! TY.

  • I was always amazed at how high she could get up there with her dark coloured voice! BRAVI!!!

  • Grazie Joana!

  • beautiful

  • Maravilloso. Gracias.

  • I always have enjoyed Maureen's rich-sounding, feminine, contralto voice.

  • Now this is a good contralto voice. Many thanks for this.Very enjoyable.
