actually i know from experience having owned an 05 m3 vert with SMG, the engine blew up twice and the tranny shat parts all over the road 3 times. bmw had to buy the car back under the lemon law. i looked at how much it was to just put a cat back on the car and they wanted 1,200 for a basic cat back. ive had friends that have supercharged these engines and they only lasted 2-3 months under daily driving conditions. these engines suck

my 06' stock 350Z with a K&N drop in filter kept about even with an E46 M3 on a 40 roll. pulled about a half car on me at the end from that extra 30 hp he has. Really if they did some higher speed races (from 40 or 60) that extra power the Z has would REALLY show. I'd say 5-6 cars 40-110.
I've owned both. All I can say that my Z has yet to leave on the side of ride as both my M3 and 540i did, the 5 on several occasions as passerbys honked with ridicule. I only bought a Z after my brother (and fellow Bimmerhead) raved about his. One of the best damn sports cars I've ever owned and perhaps the most under-rated car ever made.
