No need to take my word, do the math and research your self. I've spent years studying genetics of
C. Lupis species and getting the "number" is never valid after the initial first generation of a true genomic crossing of 100% wolf and 100% dog. After than any form of dibhyrid crossing will be a matter of consistent crossing of dihybrid to yeild a "dog" that has wolf phenotype and dog genotype. Its not something that is easily done and certainly not from back yard breeding.
A simple philistine punnet square will reveal that you can not have anything more than 50% wolf 50% dog hybrid and anything more than 50% will be a guessing game. You can have a littler with one brother being a 50-50 ratio and a sister being 100% wolf based on dihyrbid cross. Even mixing two hyrbids from the f2 generation and on will not give you "75" result. After the 50% you can either mostly wolf or mostly dog, further more you will need a blood test to verify.
I have this hilarious story.... my grandpa was on vacation with us in our house in Silverton Colorado. We had my wolf hybrid with us... and My grandpa always cooks hotdogs in the morning to take with his medicine. (this is all before he knew my wolf-hybrid that well) Anyway.. He cooks his hotdog and puts it in a papertowl.. walks out of the kitchen with it (in his hand) looks down and all of a sudden it was gone. Haha Sakima snatched it before he even saw... blink of an eye quick. LOL
@oldwolf147 dont think they are legal in New York, but if you ever go to NJ, go to Howling Woods Farm. They have wolves and wolfdogs you can pet and play with.
I would think the wolf/ German Shepherd cross would make the dog more reliable and mentally sound versus the husky/wolf or malamute/wolf mixes. Why do people prefer the the husky or malamute hybrids more? I'm just curious.
Depends on the animals bred and the owners preference. Typically Mal (keep in mind the amount of wolf will make a BIG difference) crosses are much larger and retain a much "wolfier" look about them, they also tend to be much more difficult to train (moreso than usual) but are usually a bit more outgoing. Husky crosses are ususally much smaller, also retain a more "wolfie" look AND wolf-like personality. Most northern/spitz breeds can be difficult/stubborn and even timid anyway...when you add
wolf to the mix, it usually adds to that times 4! German Shepherd crosses tend to be much larger, but typically (again, the amount of wolf will make a BIG difference) do not retain as much of a "wolf-like" appearance as the northern breed crosses do. Some are "easier" to train- but with GSD's you have to be careful with hip/elbow problems and aggression. Only the most stable/sound GSD (make that any wolf, wolfdog or dog for that matter) should be bred. Hope this helps.
Thank you...I think these animals are beautiful. I once fostered a Shepherd/Wolf cross for a rescue. His name was Loki and he was really sweet. He had the wolf snout and eyes and the long spindly legs. I think they are beautiful. I probably would never own one due to the high shed factor but I just LOVE them and appreciate their existence...
act like they got a great idea for a training video and all.. If these two were really as trained as these people wished they were they would be listening to commands more better...
Even if this video is just for show.. still... it shows a lack of.. pack leader ship skills in the house...bet they don't take em for walks really
Amazing! So they're 75% GSD and 25% wolf? What type of wolf? What is their size when compared to a GSD and their personality? I had a GSD and they were excellent. I heard bad things about wolf-dogs, but i know that wolves are VERY smart - smarter than border collies and GSDs in fact.
