Awesome fight, vicious fight right from the start. True warriors. This was The Ring Magazine's Fight Of the Year 1952, here are the other candidates of 1952 - Sugar Ray Robinson KO3 Rocky Graziano , Danny Nardico KO8 Jake LaMotta , Archie Moore W15 Joey Maxim.
why do people have to try and take away what marciano achieved, just relax and watch the vid. ali himself said there's no point comparing fighters as you don't know what can happen on the night. if this fight had been by todays rules only lasting 12 rounds rocco would've probably lost on a points decision! but this was brutual 50's rules boxing. i doubt any of the haters could throw power punches for 40 minutes into a 200lb guy, take huge punishment and still come out with that bomb at the end!
@hoppuss44 I think the reason people try to tear rocky down, and many other fighters in youtube clips, is because of the hyperbolic nature of youtube comments. People are always claiming "greatest and best." If people said Rocky or Ezzard Charles or Marvin Hagler or whomever was great or very good, many fewer people would see fit to refute this. However, when people start saying "greatest ever," that always ignites heated debate, as there is no definitive answer.
@johnwtanneriv yes i agree, i think that it is impossible to say who is the greatest of all time because if for example we take marciano and train him with todays nutrion and diet information he would probably be 15lbs heavier, and he probably would've lost the fight where ezzard charles split his nose due to how easily they stop fights these days and his style of fighting dirty would be frowned upon, some of the shots he had to throw to bring don cockell down were just criminal!
Damn Marciano is overrated , look how slow he looks compared to the 37 yera old that already had over 60 pro fights ! Big looping telegraphed shots . He fought in boxing's absolute worst era because WW2 ended the careers or lives of most of the would be contenders . Marciano looks pathetic next to the other greats . Watch Ali and then look at Marcianos footwork . Look at Foreman then notice old pillow hands here . 2nd most overrated athlete in history . Wilt Chamberlain being number 1.
@MindofaJedi Dude, you're being extremely ignorant. Rocky Marciano blasted out some of the greatest fighters of all time. It's not his fault how old they were or what his level of competition. And the flaws that you point out are half of what makes him so great, because he overcame those with heart and power against legendary fighters. Overall though there's no reason to hate on any great champion, or compare this guy to that. Why not just appreciate all of these guys?
Terrificant right punch, becouse shot whit precisious and perfect timing, when Walcott shot his right. Just now i undestanding becouse Rocky as been may be, the greath heavywheight champion ever time. His boxing is very different by the good but also stupid movie about. Him having yes a greath hearth, incredible resistance, but also a very good tecnique. Is not just like a bull, is intelligent, is correct and his face is never devasted like on stupid movie. Greath Rocky.
I get so sick of this "old fellow" description of Walcott. Look at Jersey Joe, he was in great shape and hit like thunder with either hand and was still dancing before he was knocked out. JJW was one of the most dangerous men alive at the time and hit Marciano with everything but the kitchen sink. Marciano just wouldn't quit and won the fight. That's boxing and I wish raciism didn't influence our opinion of it so much.
Walcott won the first 3 rounds..but Rocky started wearing on him..Typical Marciano..He gets better as the fight progresses because his stamina is unequaled..he used to run 20 miles a day, and put dents in 500 pound punching bags..Watch the Marciano-Archie Moore fight..and you will see why Moore compared fighting Marciano to fighting an airplane propeller..Ali, Holmes, prime Louis, and Tyson are only fighters who have chance against the Rock..Or Holyfield on his best night
In earlier rounds, when RM feigned left jabs, he'd often slip to his left, and uncoil with a left uppercut to the body.
This invites a right cross counter - and it looked like JJW was "getting set" to do just this.
But this time, instead of RM just slipping left to uncoil to his right, he had a right hand traveling with it. Not only did this throw off JJW's timing of the counterpunch, it meant he was moving directly into RM's right cross. Ouch.
I like Rocky's humble manner in the ring after the fight. Not boastful, giving a compliment to his opponent, refusing to act like he "knew the outcome all along", etc. Compare that to the idiotic trash talking of today.
from the start to the finish "the rock" was the aggressor, always moving forward trying to engage. although walcott worked him point wise, marciano's sheer endurance alowed him to bring the thunder at the awesome end. I really appreciate his style. very straight forward, no fancy foot-work. He just lumbers towards his opponent like he was a giant and smacks them around like a bastard stepchild. The Rock was the best.
man rocky marciano is one of the greatest boxers point blank & dont forget he is still the undefeated heavyweight till this day 49 wins 43 ko's & no losses
i like the ebb and flow of this match, and the referee is fuckin awesome, they is no clinching w/o workin the free hand, or the ref is right there and he doesn't have to keep shovin like the modern refs do, as soon as he steps in they both willingly break, stand up fucking champions both
@MrGG1959 fuckin a man much respect to you for saying that and 74GD for posting, this shit takes time and where else would you watch ring magazines fight of the year 1952? he's got some other good shit on his page too, you should check it out.
contrary to what most people think marciono was winning about 7 rounds to 5 also marciano was 28 years old so thats pretty old for a boxer to be champ considering tyson 20 patterson 21 ali 22 anyway holmes was 28 when he won the championship the same age as rocky so whats his beef about comparing him to marciono? anyway in all there prime years ali is much better than all of them
marciano was the best boxer in the world look at his record 49 fights 49 wins he never lost a match he retired undefeated and he was on of the only 3 boxers that retired and stayed retired
Despite Walcott's age, he was no "old man" and certainly no chump. He was a great fighter, and he lost to a great fighter. Disparaging comments about either fighter are from people who know nothing about boxing and have never stepped into a ring. Walcott was the champion. Marciano had to fight him to be the champion. Walcott wasn't going to hand it to him.
And to all the haters, look at the shape Walcott was in. He looks like about 10 percent body fat. That guy is pure muscle. He is bigger, he is stronger and faster than Marciano. He beat Marciano unmerciful in that round leading-up to Marciano coming out and about knocking Walcott's head off. Marciano would have lost on points....but you can't beat him when you are laying on the mat. Marciano was a BEAST. Folks talk like Walcott got in the ring with a walker. Walcott was great. Marciano was best
1951 fight of the year. Rocky throws an incredible right hand which he called Suzie Q and knocked out the champion Walcott. I wonder why he called it Suzie Q? Incredible fight. Rocky comes back after getting knocked down in the first to dominate the fight. Of course, Rocky was always a slow starter. I score the fight 8 rounds for Marciano and 5 rounds for Walcott.
The famous slow motion picture of Walcott's face after the right hand landed is a sight to behold! Walcott's right face is distorted as if he were pulling about 9 g's of force in a jet fighter! If anybody doubts Marciano's punching power...they should that photo. It is doubtful that any human could have taken that shot and not gone down. It is amazing that Walcott lived.
Though Marciano was short in stature and small in size....pound for pound he could throw punches like Shavers or greater. He was also thick sculled. He had a freaky chin. He would walk through 4 homerun shots to get in one of his own. The one he threw put his foe on the mat. He was also adept at destroying the body. The modern day example of beating the arms and midsection before taking out the head is Big George Foreman. That is why these two fighters stand-out in the history books.
I thought Marciano hurt Walcott in the 11th and 12th rounds. If you notice in the 13th, Walcott had has hands down most of the time. One more very important point: Marciano was just as fresh in the 13th round as he was in the first. This was true in all of Rocky's fights in that he was just as strong in the late rounds as the early rounds. This is what really made him a great champ!
Great point! Out of all the other great hitters, Marciano was the only one that carried that big punch into the late rounds! His strength, pound for pound, was freakish! He was extremely physical and rough in there, and it's amazing that he could contort his 185lbs body in a way that could produce the torque necessary to create an impact of 925 foot pounds! The impact of that right hand could lift 925lbs,1 foot off the ground! There isn't anyone, past or present, that could've withstood that punch!
I thought Marciano dominated the fight after the second, until the 11th. Walcott was foolish to mix it up and was always fighting exhausted. When he moved more, he was harder to hit, and regained his own strength. Of course, he got knocked out doing that, so in the end, it didn't work.
It was a great fight, and I thought very close. I think Walcott should have moved a lot more from the beginning. He didn't have the conditioning to trade with Marciano for a whole fight. No one did.
And better than Holmes.A few of Holmes key fights went the distance and were split decisions. He never had the stamina that Rocky had. Holmes would have been an easy target for Marciano. Foreman and Tyson would have given Rocky real trouble though.
@MORCOPOLO0817 I disagree. Holmes was a rangy fighter with a great jab and powerful combinations that he could work from the outside. The Rock is no good on the outside and he plods in without effective head movement, speed or jabbing. Holmes would pound his eyes shut and cut him for the TKO. Marciano reach (67in) ,5'10", 185-197lbs fit. Holmes 6'3", 81" reach 211-218 fit.
@USArCOWARDS You must remember Ali KOd good fighters in their prime . Rocky never did . He fought old washed up guys and small guys . Can you imagine Ali getting dropped by a middleweight , Marciano did . Ali was faster , had much better footwork , was much bigger , huge reach advantage . Rocky fought I think 4 guys total over 200 punds . Alis average opponent was 2-3 inches taller and 30 pounds heavier than Rocky's . Ali could have had 50 knockouts easily against 175 pound opponents .
@MindofaJedi u r wrong walcott was in his prime when he faught marciano . he was a mediocore boxer earlier in his career... ali was not a ko puncher .. he knocked a few people out yes but so does most heavywieghts and ali faught archie moore in his prime and archie moore was 52 53 years old
I saw the entire fight countless times. Rocky gets dropped in the 1st and loses the 2nd. I think the next rounds are close but Rocky's but then the middle rounds are clearly Walcott's... Rocky was blinded during the middle rounds and it was said to have "punched at a shadow." The late rounds get close again but Walcott is clearly outpointing Rocky and beating him to the punch. Rocky charging forward doesn't win a fight if he's getting outpointed/hit. I'm a big marciano fan by the way.
And now we go to round 13, the unlucky number... maybe. No, I think you got it right. At least for Jersey Joe who was leading the whole fight but Rocky keeps coming with tremendous relentlessness and never stops punching. The stamina and power... Rocky was just a ball of granite.
I don't know why people always say Marciano just fought a bunch of old fighters. Technically, Joe is old, but he sure didn't fight like he was old in this fight. He fought like a world champion and fought to like he was proud and determined to defend his belt.
That ref could have counted to 100. The best chance Walcott had was to get Rocky in the early rounds, and you could see how rentless Rocky was in later rounds, wearing Walcott down, until that right hand got him in round 13. What a great champion Marciano was!
A true landmark classic in boxing history. War of attrition culminating in the single hardest punch ever seen in a boxing ring. Rock coming out for R13 looked as fresh as in R1. Unheard-of durability, strength & stamina. Walcott, recently ranked #10 alltime heavy, fought the fight of his life here. Beautiful fighter. Marciano - #1 champ of champs, unbeaten and probably unbeatable. Poor commentating. Thanks for uploading this great fight.
You're analysis of the fight is dead-on. No question Jersey Joe is one of the greats of all time (heavy-weight or otherwise). Tremendous punches landed by both throughout. Rock was just a little bit tougher, well-trained and younger. He achieved many great things in life and boxing mainly because of his incredible work ethic and character. A great hero for anyone, and he's one of my heroes. Thanks for posting.
You are so right. Rocky was undersized for a heavyweight, not too fast, and not the slickest guy around either(though his defense IS under rated). He more than made up for it all with incredible stamina, heart, and relentless pressure. After a couple of rounds the other fighters just didn't want any more. He always set a hard pace and forced his opponent to work HARD until the final bell. He was also very strong despite his size and kept his punch all 15 rounds. A hero and a gentleman always.
49 and 0, 180 lbs 43 knockouts. Ali dosent even come close. The man was iron.

The picture you talk about is not of the KO punch. It's just another puch from Marciano, like Bert Sugar said.

Walcott was winning. Unfortunately he leaned back against the ropes. He should have moves as in Rounds 11 and 12 and throw the jab more often.

Based on my analysis of this fight, Jersey Joe Walcott wins Rounds 1, 2, 5, 6, 7, 8, 11 and 12 and Round 4 was about even I'd say.
Marciano wins Rounds 3, 9 and 10 (10 on a slim margin).
So yes, it is 100% true. Marciano needed a knockout to win and he got it...

After the knock down Rocky came back and took the next 3 rounds for me.
And thats why loads claim the judges score cards strange.
Rocky coming fowrad and Wallcott avioding combat for me and many judges means automatically that the fight forcer wins the rounds

Well thats youre opinion.
The way i saw it was rocky got dropped and came back.
Perhaps even scoring a 8-9 on some modern score cards for the 1st round.
Either way this video shows the most deverstating punch in boxing history. yet rocky isnt in ring magazines hardest hitters of all time.
So its always going to be some rubbish opinion against another.

And now we go to round 13, the unlucky number... maybe. No, I think you got it right. At least for Jersey Joe who was leading the whole fight but Rocky keeps coming with tremendous relentlessness and never stops punching. The stamina and power... Rocky was just a ball of granite.

Joe may have been getting on in years but he was still a damn good fighter.

I don't know why people always say Marciano just fought a bunch of old fighters. Technically, Joe is old, but he sure didn't fight like he was old in this fight. He fought like a world champion and fought to like he was proud and determined to defend his belt.

Wow what a punch. Jersey Joe fell like he got shot.
