At the start of WWII the merlin engine was producing around 800 horsepower. Towards the end of the war the merlin was replaced with the griffon engine which produced in excess of 4000 horsepower. This gave some issues with torque steering and as a reseult contra-rotating props were fitted to help it go where it was pointed.
@spondonste the merlin used in the first spitfire was over just 1000hp the griffon was not 4000 hp it was just over 2000 hp later models putshed it up to around 2500 hp just from the top of my head
