  • dowwwn doowwnnn prices are down.

At least we know were coles got there song from

  • Loved this in twin towns.also loved mungo jerrys in the summertime. They really don,t make um like they used to great tune. m.s. pembs.

  • Number 1 song the day I was born. Always been a sentimental favorite.

  • A song encouraging escapism. Don't try to solve your problems, just go someplace where you can forget about them. And throw in a dose of consumerism.

  • #1 song the day I was born January 23, 1965

  • This song is wistful, hopeful, happy and sad at the same time. And there's never been a version to compare with PC's original.

  • 1 person does not want to go downtown :(

  • I remember watching this live on either "Hullabaloo" or "Shindig" in '65...it's still a great piece of music.

  • I was 10 years old when this came out. I remember getting a transistor radio for Christmas and hiding it under the covers at night listening to KEEL 710 AM in Shreveport, LA, or other stations further off. I was mainly hoping to hear The Beatles, DC5, or the Stones, but there was always something about this song I really liked that somehow captured that time for me. Every time I hear the song it takes me back to that time.

  • It's very sad what has happened to the downtown in my city. This song takes me back to when I use to shop with my mother. In a city of 270,000(now 320,000) during Christmas season there were parades, carnivals, live music inside of department stores( I am not joking) and people everywhere shopping.

Urban sprawl has moved the city and shopping father away. It's all been replaced with a dangerous cut throat drug infested scene.

  • nothing was waiting for the one dislike down town...

  • Yes, already looked at that clip too....

    Still like this one better....

I will be researching her life...I'm sure as a singer/actor, she had many

    ups....and possibly a few downs...

But I have fallen in love with her face - even if she couldn't sing at

    all....

    She is a beautiful woman...

  • @sdi1111 She was an amazingly beautiful woman with an instantly recognizable singing voice. Petula sort of encapsulated what it was to be English at that time? No one can say she has not been successful but had she been fortunate enough to have the right management behind her she could have gone so much further. Lot's of big career mistakes made by people who should have known better. Petula was and will always remain a class act.

  • Clicked on to listen, but instead fell in love with Petula's sensual beauty - her high cheek bones...beautiful lips....alluring smile and natural, lovely voice.... I could look at this B&W video all day...

  • @sdi1111 I find her in this clip somehow a bit troubled and sad. In this one her beauty and spark are much better to see. Love that one...

  • 1 dislike has never been down town <3

  • LOST!!!

  • I lived in New Orleans when this song came out, and I couldn't hear it enough.

  • A time when people didnt lock their doors during the day and you didnt feel unsafe walking the street at night [not now]

  • LOST :D

  • Hmmm - I was 11 when this came out, and it was the symbol of all the music we hated. No song better summed up the parents' idea of what we should be listening to. Ah, but what a dancer!

  • Ah!.................luv this song n u Pet..x

  • This song was from a time when you could go downtown without encountering a Mahogany Mob.

  • This is one of earliest songs that I remember from my very young childhood.

It's still a great song by a wonderful singer.

  • This was the first record I ever bought. I love this song and her repertoire. Got to see her in concert about 4 years ago. She still sounds great!

  • How fun!

  • so free and lovely at 1:50

  • I was born in 1965. I never heard this song until I saw "Girl Interrupted" at the theater and had to find out who sang it. Great voice and a great song.

  • First time I heard this classic was on WNEW-AM 1130 in NYC. I have loved this song ever since. It could describe any large city, but as far as I'm concerned, this is talking about New York.

  • Heard this song for the first time as a young boy on "The Mighty 700" - WLW AM in Cincinnati, Ohio. It was my introduction to music.

  • I'm only 20 but I grew up with her music still love her

  • Christmas 1964-1965, i was 10 yrs old and in 5th grade...this was a huge hit and it reminded me of the love for SHOPPING we had in WHEELINg, WV...a real Mecca for shopping in those days....nothing there today...the smells of the city...Black diesel smoke from the big old busses, Stone & Thomas alley Tea Room Vent, Mr. Peanut and L.S. Good's Air door and the cosmetic counter as you entered....She was such a hit and we all went shopping to this song..!!!!!!!

  • l oved the songs from that era

  • Pet had it many singers never do Petula had the beat listen watch she had it . We were young boys in puperty and we were amazed who was this beautiful lady with this song. We were in love for the first time and it hurt so bad. We all wanted her

  • songs of those times were written and perfomed from heart...

  • I hear back then the subway was $0.15 a movie was $0.75 dinner was $2.50 and a Ho was $5.00

  • Great song from when I was 15...but, hey - I think she stole that dress from Olive Oyl. Popeye's gonna be pissed if he sees this !!!

  • I was 6 years old when this song came out and I can remember it. It was a mondo hit. People sang this song in public.

  • What a great lady and a great song. Love, love, love Petula Clark!

  • Yes, I know she's still alive... ffs get a sense of humour....

  • How sad that ppl feel the need to troll on Petula Clarke's songs on youtube. Truly pathetic!

If she was alive today she'd beat you all over the head with her brolly... or something...

  • Lockemeister youre so RIght unlike the perverted words of the SKUM below whos been stalking me with his co horts. DOWNTOWN is immortal its stil 1965 forever. bless you. gOd i wish we had more like you we do in fact. PET youre the best of your kind. tOMK

  • @tomkes100 How disgusting that a confirmed hateful YT pervert like Tomkes100 is permitted on a site that pays tribute to Pet Clark's classic song. No one is stalking this perv, we are just monitoring his filth and protecting the innocent. And Tomkes knows we've done a great job!!!!!

  • @tomkes100 Everyone, beware of this Tomkes100. He is an outed YT pervert and stalker. And we are not stalking him, we are monitoring his activity to ensure what happened to us won't happen to anyone else. If anything we are giving him something to do, other than stalk young men and exploit them, and eat his own turds.

  • My Mom LOVED singing this around the house

  • @jamdawg My mom and I sung this song around the house. The 60s were great!

  • I always liked this song.

  • Leophillipines on the contrary tHANK YOu. PET Clark will endure far longer than the staying power of a Lady Ga Ga. Her music spoke for a generation my generaion. se is out calling. bless. tomk rocknroll/doo wop historian. What a singer

  • @tomkes100 When you're alone (which is always) Tomkes you always go downtown on YT and try to pick up some fresh chicken meat, that is bodybuilder boys, you damned pervert. Who cares what you say. You're a nasty old queen.

  • I do enjoy it when she goes... down town. Nudge nuge.

  • I remember hearing this on the radio every mornning.

  • I dig SHINDIG!

  • sigh i miss such great talent because there is such a dearth of it among todays crap that passes for talent. I love her!

  • One of the greatest songs of the Sixties by a truly talented singer, a most memorable classic! Petula Clark had so many hits at that time, she simply dazzled us with her choice of contemporary hits. This brings back a time vortex of many good moments and treasured friends. A time when the 33 and 1/3 rpm vinyl LP was still at the top of the charts. The record store was the place to go. And Petula's hits will continue to inspire us well on into the future. *****

    Glenn

  • Simply wonderful! )))

  • I love the fact that this song is on Girl, Interrupted. It's a great song for a wonderful film <3

  • Classic song of the 60's.

  • one of the greatest of the great songs of the rocknroll doo wop era. im a historian here. i lived thru these years 1950s- i heard it all but i 65 this song was a ATOMIC BOMB dropped on America. Like Hello Dolly it broke all records. Thanks Petula youre still the best.youre songs will live on thru ETERNITY. this I know. TOMK

  • @tomkes100 i agree Sir!

  • @tomkes100 Yes, when I heard this on the radio as a kid it just evoked my imagination to invision everything she sang about. The slight echo in the vocals and the super orchestration completely makes this song into a pop art form. when she belts out "downtown" it still send shivers up my spine. What a VOICE!

  • OMG, thank you SO MUCH for sharing this version of Downtown! I've been looking for this version for quite a while now and I am SO HAPPY to find it here. Thank you again for sharing the Shindig! version with us, and thank you so much for making my day ! :)
