My dog always wags her tail up high when she's happy. Whenever she see's my mom, dad, friend, sister occasionally, and me. Then she goes insane. I'm in danger of being licked to death. Real aggressive. Does her tail wagging have to do with the fact that her tail is sort of curly? Like in a Q over her back?
"you do not pet a dog when he is afraid" not true, it depends on what is scaring him. if it is a car or something, then you pet him to let him know its ok.
I lived 25 years on a farm with both dogs and bullies and I tell you what I read: your dogs are afraid. I saved many dogs released on roads or in forests. These dogs are not recognised as family members, they are handled as tools. They should be family members! BTW it is not a sin if a dog is excited. They must be excited and happy, just as you and everybody and tomorrow we'd live in a better world. Man, go to nature, relax and when you've returned watch zakgeorge's videos and read tail wags.
well u just defeated the purpose of a video. i could have read all of what was given here from a book with a few illustrations ! u r on video, make use of it.
@MrMurph127 they look more relaxed, nonchalant, and content. it is not natural for a dog to live with high anxiety and run around in circles and jump all over the place. if the latter sounds like ur dog u probably aren't fulfilling their needs by exercising and challenging them mentally. dogs are smarter than u think, but they need to be given the opportunity to rise to a challenge not just lay around all day or wander around your house and yard all day.
... this video omits a lot. Just because a dog's tail is between it's legs, doesn't mean it's afraid. Look at greyhounds, for instance. On the other end, one of my dogs has a naturally high tail, it doesn't mean she's always aggressive or dominant.
A few years ago, two parents went out for dinner. A few hours later, the babysitter was calling to ask if she could cover up the clown statue in the kids' room, the father said,"Take the kids and get out of the house. We'll call the police, we don't have a clown statue." The "clown statue" is really a killer that escaped from jail. If you don't post this letter on to 10 videos tonight, the clown will be in your bed at 3:00 am with a chainsaw in his hand
k there's no point in making this video if you're gonna the words all over the screen. I can't see what you're doing. Maybe you should put the words in the description or only at the bottom/top of the screen
This man knows what he's talking about. I cant wait until i get my dog to behave and be good like that. I just got her and she is an over excited maniac. But very very loving. 2 year old pit. Thank you for the tips.
Those dogs are so poor.. the US army has less commands.. you are suppose to give them a good home.. they are so poor with you.. they are never happy near you.. its like the Nazi teaching..
@zampakto93 no actually my dogs tail goes straight up when he gets aggresive and it even wiggles a little in a weird way and he like freezes and stares..
@gir4evr when a dog is aggressive and ready to attack it shows no sign but u cant feel the silence and see the aggresion in the eyes tailes up means excitement and i dont know if ur experience but a dog who "Wiggles" its tail and bark usually is from frustration, like dogs in cages barking i have never seen or experienced dogs that shows aggression by "wiggles a little in a weird way and he like freezes and stares"
@savecharles are you under the impression I cut my dogs tail off?? I got him that way obviously. Just like boxers and rotties alot of bulldogs tails are cropped at birth. I live in Alberta Canada and they just passed a law stating you cant crop tails or ears here anymore. So maybe i will have better luck with the next one, huh?
i just have a question: you said that when the dog's tail is wagging in the middle then that is a happy state; but when my dog wags side to side in the middle he is actually nervous like when he wags his tail low. but when he wags his tail up and down or in circles, that means he is happy. Is that a common thing or just that my dog expresses himself differently?
but if you pet them, it kinda like is tell them that it is okay to be afraid....it's just better to let them be especially if you are a stranger, but if they are barking then a nervous matter, you have to firmly correct them.I just wanna remind you guys that dogs think differently. Petting is not reassuring, but it actually is praising.
IF you pet a dog incorrectly, the do will think it is the leader
Thats absurd, if a dog is afraid and you are it's master you should touch and comfort the dog. The dog must learn that you are in control and not a threat. A frightened dog *might* bite, but more often than not, it wants to be reassured by it's masters. A well raised dog will almost never bite at all, much less it's master.
Kev3d Thats wrong, if you pet the dog when it is afraid then you are rewarding that state of mind, the same way that you pet and praise a dog when it sits. If your dog is afraid you need to be ignore that behaviour and act indifferent towards the source of the fear. Dogs don't rationalize like humans he doesn't understand what you mean that when you are petting him and saying "its alright, dont worry". All he knows is that you are happy with what he is doing right now, and that is being afraid.
Dogs are not binary machines. They are psychologically more complex than simply responding to rewards and punishments.
Dogs seek comfort from their mothers, companions and masters. Dogs that are not comforted may hide and become very neurotic whenever they are scared because they will not see their masters as caring or in control.
"Dogs are not binary machines. They are psychologically more complex than simply responding to rewards and punishments. "
Yes dogs are not binary machines, and they are complex animals, but unfortunately they don't speak english, so we cannot communicate with them in a complex way. The most effective way to train your dog is to mark the moment you are either happy, or unhappy with what he is doing or what he has done. Comforting a dog as not the same as comforting a human.
A pack leader can act unafraid to the source of the fear and the fearful dog will learn to take cues from him. And that can be seen as comfort.
If you comfort him in a human way, "good boy its ok, don't worry" and pet him he will learn its ok to feel this way, and he will go to his human whenever it happens. Which is an undesirable trait.
"You never pet a dog when he's afraid, 'cause it'll just make him more afraid"
Good god, you need to do some more ressearch. If you are being held at gunpoint and someone gives you a chocolate chip cookie do you become more afraid?

hey, i like your vids but i got a problem. i got a new dog 2 weeks ago. i taught it some stuff like walking on a leash and sitting and coming to me. but the thing i hate is that he poops all over my lawn. do you know how i can teach him to poop some1 else. there is a forest behind my house and the dog stays outside all the time. so could i like teach him to poop somewhere else? if anyone knows please answer. P.S. my dog is 3 months old
first off do not listen to this guy he has no idea what hes talkung about... if you want you dog to poop in a specific area put on a leesh when u take him out o the bath room... bring him to the woods or the spot and stay there till he gos to the bath room.. whne he dose grace him and reward him... if u want more help search up for the amazing dog training man on youtube.. hes very helpfull
good vid, but also there is dog with tail halfway between down and perpendicular, with ears stiffened but still down, they do this when working on walks, hard to explain but if you know it, then you know what i mean lol
I am having so manny problems with my neighbor dogs. They get to work and leave the dogs barking all day. Anythong I can do to stop them without anyone noticing? Thank you.
Tail perpendicular to spine and wagging is happy, tail low is and tucked is fearful (like the behaviour that your dog is howing towards you) and up and over the back can be arousal, aggression etc. The intense stare that you are talking about is called Targeting...which preceeds scanning and targeting.
When trying to teach, or decipher body language the entire body and stiffness of the body must be taken into consideration. Not just the tail.
Some breeds have tails that are set over their backs. People sometimes think of them as agressive, but that is just the breed standard. Should have covered that in the video as well.
i think it's great how your teaching peeps this, I think though you should explain the tail wagging a little bit more and be more "procist" ( i think thats how you spell it ) because a lot of dogs are just dominant dogs and have there tails up when meeting. I think you should explain the body langauge part with the dogs that are actually dangerous cause some peeps may get confused with dominent and aggressive behaviour
if he fixates on something, you can quickly jerk and release on the leash and say HEY or STOP firmly. kinda pull him or lead him so he faces you or is close to you. if he still fixates, jerk again, say HEY and kinda swat or poke him in his sholder/side (it does not have to be mean or painful at all, it should just get his attention). keep doing this until he is just looking at you. if he starts to fixate on the thing, swat him again lightly and say HEY NO. for ex. watch the dog whisperer vids
I was at Starbucks on Friday sitting outside and someone brought their Great Dane and I swear that dog had its tail tucked so far between its legs, I felt bad for him. Guess he wasn't used to being around other people
I think my dog is broken. You cant train him!!! I have watched that show on Animal Planet with that British lady (i forgot what its called) and i have seen Dog Whisperer. But somehow, my dog can't learn to sit. He actually learned it when he was like eight months old but somehow he forgot! Now if he does not get what he wants, he'll bark at you.
See kikopup channel. Emily provides demo of her actually training it. One of them is "How to teach a beginning sit/down stay". Also have a look at Karen Pryor web site clickertraining (.) com for barking and other stuff like learning how to train, and how learning works. Forget about the dog whisperer. Its just a TV show and according to the humane society his methods are outdated, improper and inhumane. That's why the warning is at the beginning of his show. Have fun and don't give up.
Tail up does NOT mean aggressive. It means he's excited. You'll also see it go up in an extremely happy state of mind. If the tail is wagging and his behind is wagging along with it, that's good.
If the tail is wagging firm from left to right and the rest of the body is fixed, not moving, ears are pointed forward, he has a "hard eye" and some other symptons that are a bit harder to see - beware.
@id0069 I agree. These dogs seem to be doing what they can to avoid interacting with him. He's obviously doing something wrong, I mean look at Cesar Milan, he can manage to control a whole pack of dogs yet have everyone of them happy and exited to be near him.
same here. Or, I have a flat-coated retriever, so his tail is almost always up. He's never aggressive though, and very good with dogs, so I don't really know what to look for when it comes to aggressive...
go out side in public and walk with him. make 3 steps front and 3 steps back, but when you make those 3 steps back say come or come boy or say her or his name.
that worked with me but my dog is a boxer and not a pitbull, but im sure it could work with a pitbull.
I have a little girl havaneeze puppy and her tail is almost always up curled above her back and wags a lot and is never down so I don't know if that means she's happy :)
obviously you don't really know how to read your dogs body signals, because in the video for Dog Training Tips: How to Fix Bad Behaviors in Dogs; the dog's tail was tucked, and his/her head and ears were lowered displaying fearful body posture AND YOU STILL CONTINUED TO ALPHA ROLL THE DOG! someone needs to send you a video on how to be a better dog owner.
first of all einstein, telling someone to 'shut up' from a computer is an immature and ridiculous 'demand' to make, so if you want me to acknowledge and respect your comment then try growing up some. second, you don't know me, so how can you say what i do and don't know?! and lastly, i'm going by dog training from a canine behaviorist perspective, so i'm VERY aware of what is and what is not appropriate. and as a side note, i do have a dog, but that's irrelevant.
im sorry but i guess fact is irrelevent to you. chill out, ur on the internet, ur gonna be insulted so grow up and join the rest of the web. secondly, ive watched this guys episodes and they r good tip which i have used for both family dogs i have had and the first lived a long happy life and the second is middle age now and a good balance of, watchdog, affectionate(but knows wont be spoiled), submissive, playful, and can gauge agressiveness very well. hes being firm with his dogs, but logical
LOL! being insulted is not a requirement to be apart of the internet experience. it's a luxury that computer tough guys like yourself take because you know that you can't TRULY be confronted for your ridiculous 'indulgence'. only a CHILD belittles when they don't agree. as for our "dog expert" he uses tactics for submission that's not necessary for a HUMAN to use. it's OUTDATED and INHUMANE. your approval doesn't make it right, just like making a video on youtube does not make him an "expert"...
umm, computer tough guy like myself? all i am is just a person that occasionally blogs, alot of people do. "ridiculous indulgence"? i dont have any problem with confrontation since that fact i comment on the net doesnt mean im mute. the only point i made about being insulted on the net is that it happens alot and i find no point in fighting back about how some1 insulted u. i never said he was an expert, i just find his advice insightful and i see no problem with being a non-abusive packleader.
umm yeah, with such clever and ORIGINAL comments as "go home peta" why would u want to deny ur computer 'tg' status, lol. and 'personal' confrontation would be the opposite of the 'anonymousness' of computer confrontation, right?! so that would effect HOW u respond(not IF u do)to a someone over the net vs in person. if u don't like that a person can expect some decency on the web, then maybe u should grow up 'pimpmasta' *snickers* and acknowledge that the net is not an insulter's playground. ciao
AND, i didn't say that u claimed he was an expert. i was playing up on the origins of the video which is under "expert village!" AND AGAIN, alpha rolling is an abusive training tactic. u need to be more concerned about being a good dog owner and worry less about being a pack leader. u can't be a leader until u learn how to 'lead' appropriately.
My dog will get that intense focus stare that you were talking about. How do I interupt or correct that behavior?

nothing you can do about their dogs exept talk to the neighbours if the dogs are barking all day it usually means they're not in charge.

cool, i just made little tail wag video today ;D
texasgirly1979 2 years ago
Tail perpendicular to spine and wagging is happy, tail low is and tucked is fearful (like the behaviour that your dog is howing towards you) and up and over the back can be arousal, aggression etc. The intense stare that you are talking about is called Targeting...which preceeds scanning and targeting.
When trying to teach, or decipher body language the entire body and stiffness of the body must be taken into consideration. Not just the tail.

Some breeds have tails that are set over their backs. People sometimes think of them as agressive, but that is just the breed standard. Should have covered that in the video as well.

ya like palmeranians, real monsters ehh? haha

i think it's great how your teaching peeps this, I think though you should explain the tail wagging a little bit more and be more "procist" ( i think thats how you spell it ) because a lot of dogs are just dominant dogs and have there tails up when meeting. I think you should explain the body langauge part with the dogs that are actually dangerous cause some peeps may get confused with dominent and aggressive behaviour

Correct him how?
DieByWolf 2 years ago
if he fixates on something, you can quickly jerk and release on the leash and say HEY or STOP firmly. kinda pull him or lead him so he faces you or is close to you. if he still fixates, jerk again, say HEY and kinda swat or poke him in his sholder/side (it does not have to be mean or painful at all, it should just get his attention). keep doing this until he is just looking at you. if he starts to fixate on the thing, swat him again lightly and say HEY NO. for ex. watch the dog whisperer vids

The bad thing about my dog is when his tail goes up, all of that fur curls up above it so I never know if its the angry thing or happy....

Now if he does not get what he wants, he'll bark at you.
msDreamer5894 2 years ago

Questions:
Why don't your dogs ever seem to wag their tails when you are near them, only when they are moving away from you?
Why don't your dogs ever seem to want to look at you? They are almost always turning their heads away from you.
Hints:
Dogs are usually happy to see their '.leader'. They are never happy to see a 'bully'.
Dogs look to their 'leaders' for guidance. They are fearful if they have to interact with a 'bully'.

@id0069
Maybe the dogs are bored or sick of his company
nicolevins 1 year ago
@id0069 I agree. These dogs seem to be doing what they can to avoid interacting with him. He's obviously doing something wrong, I mean look at Cesar Milan, he can manage to control a whole pack of dogs yet have everyone of them happy and exited to be near him.

@id0069 I Agree With You, But Its Possible They Were Sheltered Dogs Or Something.

Your backgrounds are sometimes cluttered. Make sure to tidy the counter when you film a video.

My dog, Bo, has her tail up and curled all the time when she walks, but when she is aggressive her tail goes down and her hair goes up.
azxsdcvfgb77 3 years ago
Does her tail uncurl?
seka1986 3 years ago
no.... she's not a husky.... just up like a 115 degree or just like a 45 degree or just straight
azxsdcvfgb77 3 years ago
same here. Or, I have a flat-coated retriever, so his tail is almost always up. He's never aggressive though, and very good with dogs, so I don't really know what to look for when it comes to aggressive...

How do i get my i month old pitbull to come to me when i call him ANYONE PLEASE HELP
KEVIND666 3 years ago
Pack some raw ground beef around your neck.
seka1986 3 years ago 6
go out side in public and walk with him. make 3 steps front and 3 steps back, but when you make those 3 steps back say come or come boy or say her or his name.
that worked with me but my dog is a boxer and not a pitbull, but im sure it could work with a pitbull.

obviously you don't really know how to read your dogs body signals, because in the video for Dog Training Tips: How to Fix Bad Behaviors in Dogs; the dog's tail was tucked, and his/her head and ears were lowered displaying fearful body posture AND YOU STILL CONTINUED TO ALPHA ROLL THE DOG! someone needs to send you a video on how to be a better dog owner.
sophiabutler 3 years ago
hey shut up, do you even havea dog? if you do, you should be a better dog owner. this guy knows more than you about dogs.
joshcao25 3 years ago
first of all einstein, telling someone to 'shut up' from a computer is an immature and ridiculous 'demand' to make, so if you want me to acknowledge and respect your comment then try growing up some. second, you don't know me, so how can you say what i do and don't know?! and lastly, i'm going by dog training from a canine behaviorist perspective, so i'm VERY aware of what is and what is not appropriate. and as a side note, i do have a dog, but that's irrelevant.
sophiabutler 3 years ago
im sorry but i guess fact is irrelevent to you. chill out, ur on the internet, ur gonna be insulted so grow up and join the rest of the web. secondly, ive watched this guys episodes and they r good tip which i have used for both family dogs i have had and the first lived a long happy life and the second is middle age now and a good balance of, watchdog, affectionate(but knows wont be spoiled), submissive, playful, and can gauge agressiveness very well. hes being firm with his dogs, but logical
Pimpmastahanhduece 3 years ago
LOL! being insulted is not a requirement to be apart of the internet experience. it's a luxury that computer tough guys like yourself take because you know that you can't TRULY be confronted for your ridiculous 'indulgence'. only a CHILD belittles when they don't agree. as for our "dog expert" he uses tactics for submission that's not necessary for a HUMAN to use. it's OUTDATED and INHUMANE. your approval doesn't make it right, just like making a video on youtube does not make him an "expert"...
sophiabutler 3 years ago 8
umm, computer tough guy like myself? all i am is just a person that occasionally blogs, alot of people do.
Pimpmastahanhduece 3 years ago
umm yeah, with such clever and ORIGINAL comments as "go home peta" why would u want to deny ur computer 'tg' status, lol. and 'personal' confrontation would be the opposite of the 'anonymousness' of computer confrontation, right?! so that would effect HOW u respond(not IF u do)to a someone over the net vs in person. if u don't like that a person can expect some decency on the web, then maybe u should grow up 'pimpmasta' *snickers* and acknowledge that the net is not an insulter's playground. ciao
sophiabutler 3 years ago 2
AND, i didn't say that u claimed he was an expert. i was playing up on the origins of the video which is under "expert village!" AND AGAIN, alpha rolling is an abusive training tactic. u need to be more concerned about being a good dog owner and worry less about being a pack leader. u can't be a leader until u learn how to 'lead' appropriately.

dude... 69266 videos and 1 comment? i guess it is quantity not quality on youtube.
