It's not about 'stealing' from the rich, tax is more than just paying for services you use it's also a duty. Richer people are better equip to spare money for the taxes, it would be unfair to tax at the same level someone who was struggling to pay for necessities. And it's the duty of a society to prevent it's citizens from dying due to circumstances that leave them with assets below what they need for necessities.

If your looking for a solution to taxes, read up on the FAIRTAX! You pay taxes only on what you buy new, and the under-achievers get a refund based on there the under-achieving income level. Actually he's not. That all works economically if you do the math. Most of the federal budget is currently going to the military or their clients in one form or other, which is barbaric. Change that and you won't have to raise taxes, except perhaps on the rich.

I don't think that amount of sacrifice is what most people are promoting, but rather cleaner and more efficient technology and changing smaller things to save energy. cutting off nearly everything at once to solve the problem is just idiotic, and I doubt any logical conservationist would argue in favor of it.
