i think this is just conor oberst not conor oberst and the mystic valley band.. it's his solo project- a separate release that came out before the mystic valley band
Sounds to me like he's comparing the process of losing faith in the church with the ending of a love affair.
All the historical stuff like Julius Caesar's assassination on the Ides of March, (a Roman holiday of worship to Mars, god of war) and Joan of Arc, an illiterate farm girl who claimed that the voice of God was instructing her to take charge of her countrys army and lead it to victory, who was later burned at the stake by the Church, is a warning about having TOO MUCH faith in something.
Lenders in The Temple is a reference to a scene in the bible where jesus get's pissed and tosses over the cashier's table in the Temple of worship and starts whipping people-
" My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations."—Isaiah 56:7
and " But you have made it a den of thieves"—Jeremiah 7:11
The reference to den of thieves may be a reference to inflated pricing or more sinister forms of using a religious cult to exploit the poor.
This song is so great. This song, in my opinion, is probably the best on the album, followed by Milk Thistle. My thoughts might change after I listen to each song some more, but I have this song currently on repeat.
Did you get these songs with an encrypted bittorrent...and if so what's the password because I have the leak downloaded, but I cant listen to them without the password
Elliott Smith... so reminiscent... beautiful

The best way to experience Conors music imo
is to get up real early, watch the sun come up, smoke a cigarette, and listen to the record.
