John Campbell had such reverence for the roots of Blues, those who formed the music to begin with and got on records in the early days..but he also was taking the music somewhere, and the technique of playing it. Incredible combination of timing, the voice, and adaption of acoustic and electric styles. He was sincere. Miss this player, this writer and his energy of the Blues. Never be another like him.
"this guitar's been around since 1934. Got to treat gentle." John definitley did not treat it gentle!! He played that thing the way it was to be played!!
Somewhere I have a cassette tape where I saved a message he left on my answering machine, a couple months before he died. He was a funny MF. Definitely miss jamming with him.
Jee man, there is so much tremble on the mic that it's like he is singing to us from heaven! Awasome, Johnny the great what a loss!! Thanks for posting
He paid his dues as an itenerant bluesman, making the circuit and hoboing in the south just like the old days. This, coupled with his personal tragedies is what gave him that same hoodoo as the old guys. He was the real deal, nothing generic or fake about him. Just pure blues. I remember the first time I saw him walk out on stage. I had never heard him but just looking at him I knew that he was gonna blow the roof off the place. One bad assed motherfucker.
when there comes my time to die,,, just lay me down by the highwayside....he did saddle up his pony and disappeared on the prairie horizont... wow..campbell was one of a very few shamans to really really kick ass
Ok, Patton. I get it. You are a "true" pre-war blues enthusiast. Fine. There are people out there who consider cave drawings of stick figures to be fine art as well.
My point was that there are so many extremely accomplished musicians who hold the prewar stuff in the highest regard, from almost every genre. It's your job to think, "gee, there must be a reason for that."
Another good person to talk about Patton with, particularly from a tonal and rhythmic perspective is Bob Brozman, here guitarseminars dot com. Good luck.
BTW, if you're interested in prewar country blues/jazz/ragtime/hokum, one of the best places on the net is weeniecampbell dot com. You can talk about anything there, from why JSP is making it impossible for the Yazoo label to exist, to Patton's polyrhythmic unapproachability. Patton's just a beautifully idiosynchratic tip of a vast forrest of icebergs when it comes to prewar stuff.
