  • Thumbs up if you take pride in repairing your pitch mark after a good shot.

  • I've always repaired mine and other peoples pitchmarks but never really knew how to do it. I do now. Thanks for this vid

  • required video before you play on the course i say, haha.

  • I've been playing for 20 years, and I've never repaired my ball marks the right way. Thanks a lot Shawn!

  • i hate wen ppl dont replace em' it takes 5secs if you bey a 5$ tool

  • so many incorrect tutorials of this on youtube. they need to make people watch this video before golfing as you see a ton of the brown spots he mentioned. also, we have those pole mounted - four pronged fixers on our greens mowers but they seem to work the same way as somebody lifting the turf. not totally sold on those as i tend to bring my own divot tool with me and do it that way.

  • With all the stupid shit on YouTube, this is one of the best videos out there, ever weekend golfer in the world needs to watch this.

  • Quick and informative..thanks!

  • Thank you for posting! My brother showed me how to do it this way last week (after I swallowed my pride - & asked him), because I was never 100% sure. For some reason I find it very satisfying to walk up & see a nice sized divot the proper trajectory makes. Hell, I even look around & fix previous golfer's divots - doesn't bother me at all, only the fact that they would leave them there. They should put a diagram on scorecards, showing the proper technique, a lot of eaten-up greens out there.

  • Way to go Matt! You must have a good green thumb around the house! We won't tell your wife though, she might expand the "honey do" list! LOL Shawn

  • Good one. So pleased to not see one where the "expert" shows us how to lift the turf up from underneath or (heaven forbid) twist the turf into the pitch mark.

Question: where the ball comes in at an angle (yes, I have hit the green on occasion!), one side of the pitch mark is raised higher than the other - sort of an oval mark, rather than round - what would you recommend in terms of moving the turf back? Would you start on the high side (i.e. away from the ball's entry point)?

  • Either way works just fine; sometimes when that piece of turf is too torn, I will just tear it out as it will not take; then I go ahead and close the wound;

    Great question! Shawn

  • awesome tip. i was definately doing it the wrong way.

  • Great little tip, now i know how to do it right and i don't need a fancy tool either.

  • I'd still use a repair tool versus a tee. Better results.

  • @ritaharris As long as you fix it

  • great job, I hope everyone takes your advice. Oh, and play faster!

  • Very informative. Thanks for taking the time to explain and post this... it might be an uphill battle though to get more golfers to do the same. Keep up the fight.

  • Wow! This is so weird! Ive been playing golf a long time, and I never would have thought this was the way you're supposed to fix a ball mark! I have always thought that you were supposed to dig it up, then pat it down!

  • As a Asst. Superintendent at a Golf Club, even my Superintendent states that it is O.K to repair it buy lifting the the turf, therefore(detaching) the root from the plant! great Video thats how I was taught to repair a ball mark~ this video confirms what I've been trying to explain!!!!

  • Thanks for that great comment;

I know, I see so many pros doing it wrong...it is so important to take care of things well; like in the movie "The Last Samurai"! All the best, Shawn

  • I say take it to the extreme and fine any pro who does it wrong, especially when it's a televised event!! Clearly this is the more laborious way to do it, and the "root killing" method is a one-motion quick-fix (and let's face it, that's the way the world is these days!!). This is my biggest "pet hate", along with bunkers not being raked after use. Great explanation. Thanks.

  • thanks for all your vids.

And yes I was doing it badly :/

  • so that's why my golf course greens are full of Brown Pitch marks... thanks Shawn

  • this is the best video on fixing a ball mark that I could find. nice job (and no twisting!).

  • Thanks Guys!

    Pass it on! Shawn

  • That's a very important golf lesson. I've always lifted up the dirt but I won't be doing that from now on.

  • Always wondered what was the correct way of repairing a pitch mark - now I know !! All golfers should forward this to their buddies.

  • thank you :-)

  • wow this is great...if only the balls that i hit could hit the green

  • Ha!Ha! Good one - LOL!

  • Great video. A must have for all beginners. I have seen this taught the wrong way too many times.

  • this is the most basic etiquette for golfers but many are not taught in proper way. thanks for the clear explanation.

  • thanks for clearing that up Shawn

  • Excellent. Very helpful

  • thats awsome it just disapears haha im a new golfer thanks for the tips guys =)

  • Thanks Shawn Clement. I've been doing it wrong the past 3 years.. Oops! :(

  • Mea culpa. I am a fairly new golfer (about a year into it), and have been using the wrong procedure. So, thanks for posting this, and mea culpa!

  • I already knew this procedure. I looked to see if there were any comments. I hope the people that need to see this do, that is if they even repair their pitch marks at all. Thanks very much for posting.
