What most likely happened was that the barrels had been damaged either in the storm or while loading and the alchohal was draining out during the voyage, filling the hold with fumes, and fearing the cargo was about to explode Briggs gave the order to abandon ship, the plan had been to tow the lifeboat behind the ship, and in the panic the crew failed to properly secure the tow line and when a gust of wind blew up it snapped the tow line casting them, where they succumed to the elements
The compas was indeed damaged in the storm, so the crew didn't know they were off course, and after they abandoned ship they tried to make for land which they believed they were close too, but succumbed to the elements or were killed if the boat capsized
1. The Alchohol barrels were damaged while being loaded or in the storm, and the hold filled with fumes
2. The Compass was damaged in the storm, and the storm blew the ship off course, and because the compass was damaged they didn't know they were off course
3. When the holds were vented, Briggs ordered abandon ship and in the panic the crew failed to properly secure the tow line which snapped casting them adrift where they succumbed to the elements
However that's only a theory nothing can really be confermed since the Mary Celeste's log book, with Brigg's entries, were destroyed when she was scuttled as part of an insurance scam, and the wreck site was burried by the quake in Haiti
i just think that it was not a mutinity. in my opinion the problem was that they were afraid that the alcohol could cause an explosion, so he thought about his family aboard and to keep them safe he use the lifeboat and abandoned the ship, without realizing that the mary celeste was saffier than a little lifeboat. imagine if they were inside of a storm(that could be the reason of their dissapearing) that boat could not resist
This is a plausible theory, if you know anything about sea fairing this is what they did back then when cargo was dangerous. It was called safty measures. Dodging I think!

Still no explanation for the broken compass?
Mark2790 5 months ago
@Mark2790 Maybe it was the storm that shattered the compass

@ardnaxelaprincess19 Yep. I really don't believe its mutiny and I don't think it was sickness either.

@James1toknow It's a plausible theory if the Captain was inexperienced.
To have all the people on board in one lifeboat trailing with a rope is a foolish move.
The logical plan-in this regard-would have been to have a crew member or two still on the boat.
Since the Captain was experienced and had sailed on a number of voyages, this makes no sense taking his record into consideration.
More than likely, all baord were taken away by party or parties unknown.
MultiSmartass1 1 year ago
@MultiSmartass1 Well would you want to be one fo the people left onboard? I wouldn't. For some reason I think we are not getting the full story here.
James1toknow 1 year ago
@James1toknow You leave two crew members on board while the lifeboat is tethered to the ship-you don't row away.
And yes, I'd rather be on a boat with provisions and supplies and food than in a lifeboat with nothing.
I'll say it again, an experienced Captain like Briggs would have been a complete fool to mount a plan like that.
I agree-we aren't getting the full story because they either were captured or taken away by unnown parties.

@MultiSmartass1
Why would the pirates take nothing on the ship though?
loner1878 1 year ago
@loner1878 Who says they didn't?
We assume they didn't-they might have.
They didn't take the alcohol because it was leaking.
More than likely-if pirates took the crew and all aboard-the passengers were taken in lieu of other cargo.
Or it might have been that those on the ship were the intended cargo.

foul play somewhere.
