I think that the main thing about this was that he kept that guy distracted the entire time so he didn't really have a chance to think about what he was doing.

That, combined with Darren acting like it was perfectly natural and possibly socially obligatory for him to hand Darren his pocket contents, may have been a major factor in this working so well.
