Hmm...well, it's hard to explain, really. The Chocobo is really a bird that's used like a horse or other riding animal in the Final Fantasy video games. In this anime, however, they seem to be a bit more....odd. I would have to go with bird, however, because they seem to be too smart to be like hens or chickens.
