Considering the condition of our current highway bridges that have the same construction by the looks of it,I wonder how long the new bridge will last compared to the old steel bridge?
Oh my. What happened to the brand new abutment that caused them to demolish it with that large hoe-ram? Must have been one helluva screwup - I'd like to know the real story behind that one...
Thanks, Burner. Brings back old memories. I drove a 1956 Ford across the old bridge one night in 1963 with 3 passengers. Got cross-wise at Division street on the rails and away we went! Created quite a stir back then. Probably won't try the new one.
burner50, I thoroughly enjoyed this video. To see the view from the Kate Shelly bridge, plus to see the new bridge construction is just awesome. Hopefully this will be footage they use years from now about the bridges. I've always decided against joining UP for train service to do easy normal office jobs but you're slowly changing my mind. Maybe once the economy picks up and they start hiring again, you'll see a new face out on the rail.
to answer your question, someone improperly to properly planned/sampled/soil tested the East side of the bridge (hence the reconstruction of that pad and first bent).
Not only did the pad cracked but they had to redo 3 of the pillers after that started to fall over. I went to ISU for design, the first thing they teach you is to take into account what used to be located on the site, not just 10 years ago but 100 years ago also, which would be old mines and track beds, hence the weak soil structure that UP engineering ran into but did nothing about, so a few million later, it is all good.
About the mines, they use to mine silver or iron here (dont exactly remember which) but any how what happened was the weight from the upright or piller made the ceiling of the mine cave in and three of the pillers began to lean and crack, UP is now behind schedule on this project which was suppose to be open for 70mph service since October, I was just there, and it looks like it won't be till spring till the new bridge will see it's first train.
Additionally, they are going to redo the west end of the bridge like they did to the east end because they are experiencing some type of problem there. This will happen after they finish placing the beams and deck pans, however...

Looks like they fucked up at 3:50. Fail!!!!!!
Besides that and the constant beeping, this is by far the best railroad cab ride video I have ever seen

@railroader1993 The constant beeping was Automatic Train Control because we were coming in on signals.

not sure what's up 20p65's ass but anyways, that was a unique view most of us won't ever have so thanks for sharing :)

Nice vid. Unfortunately another anal retentive pinhead railfan pontificating about his vast "knowledge" of the "subject" rears it's head.

Cool video. Unfortunately we have an FRA rules violation on tape Mr. UP Boone conductor.

central iowa used to be a haven for horrible quality coal...you may notice the waste just west of the "coal" road.
