Question- For a few days I saw what I thought was a large puddle of oil under my 2003 Tahoe when I left. I took it to the dealer and they said I needed a new water pump. After I took it in it didn't leak anymore leading me to think it was just a loose bolt. If my water pump was no good wouldn't I hear something or the vehicle temp be high? I will buy a new water pump from you after seeing your video but wanted to make sure the clown at the dealer wasn't making this up? Thanks so much!
@1aauto. For an old skool 1985 GMC c1500 305/5.0H, removal of the fan from pump: i need to rent the special fan clutch tool from AZ or can i tap the wrench on like this video? I assume my clutch turns 1-way while holding the nut
@ballershanelle It may have four small bolts that hold it on. If it does not, and has one nut in the center as shown in the video, than you should be able to use it using the same method. Hope this helps you out.
Just changed water pump in '04 Tahoe. Installed new thermostat as well. Let vehicle warm up for a bit and heater is blowing cold air. Is it common for it to take a little bit for heater to blow warm air again?
@blakegotanewface What you can do is WHEN THE TRUCK IS COLD, take the radiator cap off, blast the heat in the cab and start the truck. This will help any air pockets to find their way out of the system. Top the radiator off with antifreeze if the level drops, and top off the overflow tank. If the heat is still luke warm at best, feel the hose on the other side of the thermostat going to the heater core to see if it's warm. If it is you could try flushing the core with a hose.
Hello, please help, I have changed my water pump on a 2004 GMC Envoy, and I think I have an airlock in the cooling system somewhere. The engine skyrocketed in temp after running for about 10 minutes or so. I replaced the temp gauge as well when I had the water pump out. The temp skyrocketed after running for about 10 minutes or so - any thoughts on how to clear the line of the air bubble. Thx!
@wavehog41 You may want to replace the thermostat and also try to relieve any air pockets that may be in the system. To do this (when the vehicle's cold) remove the radiator cap and start the truck. Turn the heat on full blast inside of the vehicle and monitor the level of the coolant inside of the radiator. It the level goes down top off the radiator with some fresh antifreeze. Hope this helps you out.
@TheBubbles069 We currently do not have an auto repair video on that particular application. If we make this repair in the future we'll keep this in mind.
Thanks for the informative video! Saved me $500 from the local shop. As others have said not that difficult more intimidating than anything. If it's an older vehicle go ahead and replace those belts and hoses. Since you have the thermostat out, might as well replace that also.
hey a1 i have a 04 sierra that leaks coolant cant find any leaks in the hoses... but there is coolant stains can it be the water pump if so how much do yall sell it for.. thanks
@lamota0622 Usually when a water pump is going bad you will see coolant dripping from the weep hole on the bottom of it. Here's a link to the water pumps on our website. Hope this helps. 1aauto.com/1A/WaterPumps/GMC/Yukon/1AEWP00021?utm_source=youtube&utm_medium=youtube&utm_campaign=1ATony
Thanks for the video, i notices you didnt use gasket glue or any other grease. also while i have everything off mabe should i replace belts? hell, should i do my timing chain? i have 115,000 miles. 2002 yukon xl denali. THANKS!!
@SoccaGal23 The chain should last quite a while longer, but if you wanted to put a new on in as perventative maintanence. It's not going to hurt anything.
pretty nice video, I found it comforting to see each step, although nothing hard in this process it was good KNOWING there was nothing hard prior to starting...whole job about an hour for a first timer so seeing ahead really paid off...no hunting for "what's next" - Thanks a Bunch!!
Great video step by step . I just did my GMC sierra 2003 v8 5.3 and it took about 2.5 hours and i took my time too. I got an estimate to have it done and parts and labor was $450!!! I bought parts at O'rielly auto parts for $175. For any who are worried about doing this your self it is easy thanks to A1 Auto Thank you so much!!!! and may all remember Jesus Christ this Christmas. -Mr. Illinois-
@roycensarah Thank you for visiting our YouTube channel. We sell these water pumps for your 99-04 Chevy Silverado on our main website for a great deal less with free shipping too. Here's a link to them on our website.
@richcramify If you took the belt off you may want to put it back on, this will put some tension on the pulley so that you can break the bolts loose. Once you break them free you can take the belt back off and then continue removing the bolts.Hope this helps.
@1aauto Thanks for the advise. Turns out the waterpump is actually what's leaking. Is a remanufactured pump likely to do the same or should I stick to a new one?
@1aauto I have an 02 Tahoe (5.3L) with a Low Coolant light on. Dealer added DexCool and advised me that coolant sensor was good. One week later, light is back on and coolant level dropped. No visible leaks in or around water pump area. No dripping on driveway either. Don't know what else it could be. Please help!
@valtierra2966 There could be an air pocket in the system somewhere that keeps making the fluid level drop, or you may also want to pull the dip stick to see if any gas is getting into the oil.
@1aauto I have a low coolant light on in my 02 5.3L tahoe. I couldn't find a leak anywhere yet the coolant level drops dramatically over a weeks drive. I've looked for leaks but my driveway is clean and so is the area around the water pump. Dealer told me the low coolant sensor was working properly and added a small amount of DexCool to make the coolant indicator stop flashing. It's been a week and coolant level dropped once again, only difference now is low coolant indicator is now on. Help!
@valtierra2966 You may want to pull the dipstick just to make sure there's no coolant getting into the tranny pan. If there's not, it's possible that there could just be a few air pockets working their way out of the system as you add coolant.
Leak from my water pump weep hole looks like it needs to be replaced. Nice video. When you put the gaskets on that or the thermostat do you put any sealant on either one of those?
Thank you for your time and knowledge you made my job a lot easier. I called a couple of places and it looks like you saved me about $500. I'm not much of a mechanic, but you made it look so easy that was all the motivation I needed. Thanks again great work. (2002 Chevrolet Suburban)
Handy reference video I used to replace the water pump on my '97 GMC Sierra, but there were a a couple differences. #!, on the '97, no need to remove the tensioner pulley; but, the idler pulley did have to come off to get to the heater hoses. Removing the fan clutch was the biggest challenge. You MUST use penetrator to let it work into the threads to work it loose. I also used lock tight when I reinstalled the new water pump. A clutch bolt wrench is a must here. I used a 15" crescent.
Great video! You gave me enough confidence to try this myself. Completed the job in 4 hours. Would've been shorter, but I had to take my water pump off with the fan attached and take off the fan whilst in a vice. The bearing was bad on my water pump and the belt wouldn't hold the pump in place. Thank you very much! I saved over 300 dollars thanks to you!
WOW. Best "how to" video I have used yet. You cover every detail. Wasn't sure I wanted to tackle it myself but after your video I decided to "go for it". Thanks Headed now to your website to order the parts. Thanks
Love this video! I have an '04 Silverado 1500 LS, 2WD pickup with the 4.8L V8. The truck hasn't gave me a problem yet and it has alittle over 90K miles on it. After watching this video, I know i can change the water pump when it comes time. THANK YOU!
Great! Thanks much! The only thing that I did different was... when I saw you putting on the thermostat housing and making sure the o-ring was in place properly I decided I would put the housing on the new pump while it was on the table. I tightened the bolts enough to hold it in place and then tightened them to specs after the water pump was mounted.
Hey there! Used the video to replace my son's 2003 Tahoe Z71 FWD truck. Followed the video to the letter, done in 2.5 hours. Thanks so much for the video!!!
This video is awesome. I'm about to change my water pump in my 2003 Suburban this weekend. Hey what about the GM Service bulletin "New Engine Coolant Fill Procedure" in regards to "overheating after water pump replacement". Does that apply here? It's Bulletin number 02-06-02-008.
